Dear all
A boycott Marks and Spencer facebook group has been set up to protest against their decision to sub-lease a building to Hooters in Bristol.

Boycott Marks and Spencer group

Please join it and the spread the word.

The big orange Hooters sign has gone up in Bristol.

We are about to be subjected to things like this...

Hooters girls pimping to the max

Hooters sponsors youth football tournament in Nottingham

Family friendly? I think not!

"children eat free on sundays" wtf who would take their kids?

Odysseus · 24/09/2010 19:27

I just asked my DH what Hooters was. He said "Another name for norks" and looked puzzled. Bless.

Coca · 24/09/2010 19:30

We live near Bristol...I'm guessing DH and his mates will have a birthday to celebrate in the near future....

JessinAvalon · 24/09/2010 19:32

You can take your kids and buy them a souvenir too!

We'll be "subjected" to a business sponsoring an event? well I never.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 24/09/2010 19:52

Been watching your other threads (and avoiding M&S Wink)

Have proudly joined, I have 3 DD and just hate the insidious way that the objectification of women is becoming mainstream with this "restaurant" Hmm.

Coca · 24/09/2010 19:55

Mayor, really? You wouldn't mind them sponsoing you kids' sports team? In hotpants etc

JessinAvalon · 24/09/2010 19:57

Thanks Coca and Doris. Much appreciated!

The British lasses look more like
Old Booter's Girls than Hooters Girls when you comare them to the USA versons!

Skyrg · 24/09/2010 19:59

I have largely thought this a bit of an over reaction tbh, however, having just spotted on Jess' link, a pink babygro with 'Does this diaper make my butt look fat' I think I may
A) Be Sick, B) Move Country and C) Join the group.
Hideous. :( And I don't even yet have children to protect from that kind of sexism.

Coca · 24/09/2010 20:03

I wouldn't object to a bar or big boobed girls....yawn men are simple folk, I object to bringing it into "family" life.

JessinAvalon · 24/09/2010 20:05

If you want to feel even sicker, just google 'Hooters' or 'Hooters Nottingham' in the 'images' section.

And prepare for your work's Christmas party to be held there!

Hooters popular for work's Christmas parties in the US (but not with women)

One franchise in the US even tried to start a Little Miss Hooters contest for girls of 5 years and under but there was an outcry and it was pulled.

God I sound so prudish! I mean I don't see why they feel the need to target young audiences by sponsoring kids football teams and offering deals on kids' meals

JessinAvalon · 24/09/2010 20:08

The site in Bristol is opposite a Pizza Express, an art gallery and is a stone's throw from the entrance to 3 apartment blocks which have social housing (with children) on the lower 2 floors.

So they'll get a nice view of the nice new orange Hooters sign, the posters that have gone up, and the bikini and iced wet t-shirt contests.

Lucky them.

Btw, I don't think it's prudish to have a problem with women being objectified! I certainly do! And this location is completely inappropriate for the area. The residents are not happy.

YACK at "Little Miss Hooters" I'm in the boycott! I'm peed off with them anyway after a run in with an assistant the other day...their stock and service is rubbish anyway these days!

Coca · 24/09/2010 20:14

I'm with you JessinAvalon, I would also like to see Nuts etc sold with plain covers, page 3 gone completely but I just feel slightly sheepish about these opinions as I have only really held them since having beautiful intelligent dds.

JessinAvalon · 24/09/2010 20:20

Thanks Anenome!

And Coca - don't feel sheepish. I think these things don't occur to people sometimes until they affect us personally. I know they didn't me until I was on the receiving end of some rather unpleasant treatment from an ex and then suddenly my eyes were opened to the misogynist crap that we have become so desensitised to.

I would hate to be growing up now. When I was young, grunge was in! I think there is way more pressure on girls now than there was when I was young and having something like 'Hooters' in full view and having it market itself as a family friendly restaurant doesn't help to stop the porn culture that we are living in.

the targeting of kids by this place is so, so wrong. M&S should know better.

JessinAvalon · 24/09/2010 21:04

Just did Cupcakes...but unfortunately you can't see!!! Grin

Hooters was discussed on Radio 5 this evening on the Stephen Nolan show.

They had men phoning in saying that the purpose of it so that men can perv at women and that's why they go.

Others phoning in saying that it's not a sleazy place and that they take their children there.

Others saying that it's pervy but that it's ok to take your children there.

Others saying that our culture is so sexualised now that Hooters doesn't really matter.

The manager of a Hooters (guessing Nottingham) saying that it's nothing to do with employing pretty young girls!

Men saying that it's nothing to do with the sex industry and then others saying that Hooters is part of the "oldest profession"!

People don't really seem sure what it is.

I phoned in but haven't been called back. I passed comments about the huge amount of opposition in Bristol and they haven't been read out.

However, they did let Fred from London on who said that it's ok to objectify women!

Heh; Hooters, Bristol, it's like an episode of Carry On...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/09/2010 01:41

I'll be joining Jess. What I'm really thinking about is how we can work out where they'll be targetting next. Must be some way surely.

Tee2072 · 25/09/2010 07:45

No.

BarmyArmy · 25/09/2010 08:15

I like Hooters and have wondered when they would come over here. I think it would be worth a visit.
