to believe that sex addiction is all just a load of bollocks?

Don't know if anyone saw this interview on This Morning earlier this week.
Woman claims to be a sex addict and has slept with 1000's of men. Is married and her husband is aware of situation; even waiting in wine bars while she takes men home for a shag.

Her 42nd birthday present to herself was to sleep with 42 different men. Including all members of a stag party. At once.

AIBU in thinking this is all just a load of old bollocks? The woman is a slag, plain and simple. Surely if she was addicted to sex, she could just have lots and lots of sex with her husband. Why is there a need to sleep with so many men?

Of course sex addiction exists - it's something some people have no control over. Like other addictions people are disconnected from a sense of self and have very low self-esteem. The description of the woman above sounds like a reasonable case for addiction.

I know very little about Tiger Woods but I raised a cynical eyebrow over his case - seemed to me he had to claim to be a sex addict as the press and the Christian right were so punishing.

yanbu
It most likely does exist(you can be addicted to anything really) but I do believe it is used as an excuse by a lot of people.

Gibbon · 24/09/2010 08:28

Am open mouthed at seeing women using the word slag when descibing a woman.

2shoes · 24/09/2010 08:28

so what would you call her??
(out of interest)

Strumpet, pure and simple. Grim.

Twopeople,

Tiger did not escape an expensive divorce; does not mean it was not his intention. Also he was trying to rehabillitate his public image. Not sure that worked either.

It seems today that no-one has to take responsibility for their own actions. It is always a disorder or a syndrome. Sure, we are all driven by our hormones and chemicals in the brain, and, in that sense, we don't have free will. I don't find that a very useful framework though.

Substance addiction is definitely a disease and it can be treated (although it is hard). When one tries to say a certain behaviour triggers the release of certain chemicals in the brain, so is analagous, one is on shaky ground. I really do not believe that sex "addicts" suffer meaningful physical symptoms on withdrawal or that offering an opiate to mimic the chemicals said to be released would be seriously considered as a treatment option. So, in that sense, I cannot see it as a true "addiction".

You can argue that women who are super promiscuous are not very happy although few would argue it for men. On the other hand, some promiscuous women argue that their ability to sleep with whom they like is empowering and just an expression of their physical desires. I will firmly sit on the fence on that one, being a man.

42 men in one day? How very sore she must have been Shock

I don't know, I think the term Sex Addiction is used as a get out clause in some circumstances, but it isn't usual to want to sleep with 42 different men in one day, is it?

It has to be indicative of some sort of problem.

I do feel sorry for her family though now it is public.

ShowOfHands · 24/09/2010 08:58

OP, have you considered training as a counsellor? Or a life coach?

People just need to be told straight, eh?

Man up, come on, don't be silly, shake a leg etc.

Perhaps you'd like to come and talk to my Dad. He has bipolar disorder. I'll allow that. But the addictions, compulsions and obsessions are just a nonsense. He just needs a good talking to. Fancy it?

vanillacupcakes · 24/09/2010 09:29

agree with showofhands

pfft... sex addiction? you must just be a slag!

Hmm
cupcakesandbunting · 24/09/2010 09:37

"42 men in one day? How very sore she must have been"

Things have probably slackened a bit down there after seeing so much action.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/09/2010 09:38

Lol at UQD 'birthday bumps'

clam · 24/09/2010 09:42

And Grin also at 41 hens telling UnquietDad to f* off!

ShirleyKnot · 24/09/2010 09:43

This is all a bit shit isn't it?

There's clearly something going on for this woman, some kind of pain in her. But, nah, fuck that she's just a slag.

Christ. Love that this is on a website for women as well, nice one, who needs men to hold us down when we can fucking well do it to ourselves.

spiritmum · 24/09/2010 09:48

Sex addiction definitely exists, I knew someone who had very self-destructive behaviour because her dad was abusive and she went looking for love and approval and thought she'd find it in sex. And when she didn't she went to more and more extremes...not pretty.

I have no idea about the woman on the telly bt it sounds exhausting - 42 men at once? Can't get my brain around that being remotely amusing.

spiritmum · 24/09/2010 09:50

Meant to add, which means she must have a problem. It just isn't what we're wired to do.

cupcakesandbunting · 24/09/2010 09:51

"Plus, if I decided I was a sex addict and was therefore going to celebrate my 42nd birthday by shagging 42 members of a hen party, chances are 41 of them would tell me to fuck off."

Think you're being a tad optimistic there, UQD...

Gibbon · 24/09/2010 10:03

I wouldn't call anyone a slag (horrible, horrible word)

I would say she enjoys sex. That, or she has issues from childhood that could mean she is validating herself through sex with men (or some other sucklike issue)

Either way, slag, slut or whore would never enter my mind.

Sad that is does, so easily, for so many tbh.

cupcakesandbunting · 24/09/2010 10:06

Some people are slags, men AND women.

Gibbon · 24/09/2010 10:11

But why use a derogatory word to describe someone who has lots of sex?

What difference does it make to you personally/your life, that you feel the need to comment in such a negative way?

cupcakesandbunting · 24/09/2010 10:13

So you never use a derogatory word to describe anyone doing something a bit unsavoury?

What a saint you must be.
