to find it a bit odd when people say things like 'mmmm' 'yummy' 'gorgeous' about food they have prepared

I think it might be one of those perfectly reasonable things that i am unreasonable about but I do find it exceptionally odd, and possibly a little vain to be all 'yummy', 'scrumptious' or 'mmmmm god it's so good' about food that you're prepared yourself.

Hmm

I do this. Why not?

Why are we not allowed to be proud about what we have done/made/achieved.

It is a peculiar British trait.

MaMoTTaT · 23/09/2010 18:55
Confused

what do you want them to say "ewww, yuck, this is disgusting"

MmeLindt · 23/09/2010 18:55

In fact, I even BLOG about food that I have made. With pictures and everything.

You would hate it. :)

Anenome · 23/09/2010 18:56

I hate it when people do that full stop! It reminds me of sex or something. I want to tell them "Please enjoy your food in silence young woman/man"

prettyfly1 · 23/09/2010 18:57

oh please. i love cooking, spend hours doing it and enjoy the results. yabvvvvu. Biscuit

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 23/09/2010 18:58

Well i associate those sort of sounds/comments with being appreciative about food rather than being proud of it. I don't find it odd it some one said 'it's not bad' or 'that's nice, I'd make that again'

Which is a peculiar British trait? Thinking it odd people saying it or people saying it Smile

OP posts:
MaMoTTaT · 23/09/2010 18:58

oh good god - enjoy food in silence.

pigletmania · 23/09/2010 18:58

I do this to myself if a dish I have prepared has come out all nice and tasty, why not!!! Why should we not feel proud of ourselves. I would not do it with other people around , just me, my dh, and dd.

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 23/09/2010 18:59

and also I'm with Anenome the sounds do remind me of sex, and i am not interested in what other sound like during sex (unless I'm involved)

MaMoTTaT · 23/09/2010 19:00

yabu

why on earth shouldn't people enjoy something they've made and say so?

what a bizarre attitude you have

MmeLindt · 23/09/2010 19:03

It is a peculiar British trait, the thinking it odd. Or rather the way in which pride in ones accomplishment is played down.

Similar to the brits not being able to receive a compliment without saying something self-depreciating.

mumblechum · 23/09/2010 19:04

YABU.

I do virtually all the cooking and dh always without fail, tells me it's absolutely delicious (even when it's crap), and I very occasionally agree that it's yummy.

Why shouldn't people say when they enjoy something, whether they made it or not?

MaMoTTaT · 23/09/2010 19:04

maybe the op would prefer it if they said

"oh I say isn't this dish simply divine, I believe I did a wonderful job preparing it"

DomesticG0ddess · 23/09/2010 19:06

YABU. Infact, just odd.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 23/09/2010 19:08

YABVVVU. And I do not break out the 'V's lightly. Grin

Why on earth would you be passive or bored or uninspired or lukewarm about something special that you'd cooked from scratch? People who cook and enjoy cooking, enjoy food. Why should they have to hold back just because they made it? And if I've made something rank, I say that, too.

I make quilts, and knit, and jewellery, and paint too. Sometimes I give myself compliments about those, if I'm well pleased with them. Why not?

openerofjars · 23/09/2010 19:09

I do it in astonishment that for once it has turned out edible.

"Oh my god! It actually tastes...nice!"

Disclaimer: I can cook savoury food but normally if I try and bake cakes they come out tasting unsavoury. Hence the yelping.

GeekOfTheWeek · 23/09/2010 19:09

yabu

I love food and I love sex.

Sometimes it all gets too much and ends up as a big orgy as I serve the main.

If I like what I have eaten, I compliment the chef, even if that's me! Why wouldn't I?

muggglewump · 23/09/2010 19:16

I say if I like the food I've made.
I'd stop cooking if it wasn't delicious, its is though, as I'm a bloody great cook Grin

ShirleyKnot · 23/09/2010 19:20

If I make something delish I will say " yum this is lovely" because it is. I do usually follow it up with " good recipe Nigella (or whoever)

Fuck I'm boring myself here

YABU

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 23/09/2010 19:21

Nothing wrong with complimenting it is just the 'mmmmmmmmmmmmm, yummy, oh, wow' reaction/

MaMoTTaT 'yummy' isn't a sound Wink
