to find it a bit odd when people say things like 'mmmm' 'yummy' 'gorgeous' about food they have prepared

I think it might be one of those perfectly reasonable things that i am unreasonable about but I do find it exceptionally odd, and possibly a little vain to be all 'yummy', 'scrumptious' or 'mmmmm god it's so good' about food that you're prepared yourself.

Hmm

A lot of the time when i find mysef doing this, it's the food itself rather than boasting my skills. I just 'mmmm'ed' over a piece of chicken, because it was a damn fine chook!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/09/2010 19:33

i usually say.."mmm this is lovely" then "sorry for blowing my own trumpet"...is that acceptable? Smile

SacharissaCripslock · 23/09/2010 19:35

I HATE it when people go mmmmmm mmmmm while eating. I find it utterly revolting - it IS like sex noises. Bleugh.

I have no problem with anyone (the cook or otherwise) saying proper words to describe the food - yummy, delicious etc all fine. The noises not so fine.

Hulababy · 23/09/2010 19:35

YABU

If you appreciate food then why not say it.

I don't think the words and sounds used when appreciating food are odd at all.

I often compliment friends or family on nice food they have made for me. Why wouldn't I?

And sometimes I will comment to DH if I am enjoying something I have made myself too, esp if it is something new I have made.

"I HATE it when people go mmmmmm mmmmm while eating. I find it utterly revolting - it IS like sex noises."

It is? Really? Hmm, not convinced.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/09/2010 19:36

My DD says "yum yum" when eating and also "want to eat it" for some reason (she has SN) It's very cute...

SacharissaCripslock · 23/09/2010 19:38

Well, the people I've had sex with, anyway. Wink

It's the groaning, moaning appreciative sounds that some people make when enjoying what they are eating. It's all "Oh, yes, mmm hmmmm ooo mmm," that is gross to me. Grin

ByTheSea · 23/09/2010 19:38

What can I say? I happen to be a great cook and verbalise it when I outdo myself. Wink

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 23/09/2010 19:38

Having just said om yom yom is acceptable I have just realised it comes from my issues with my mother Shock

Oh dear god she's infiltrating all aspects of my life Sad including the food appreciation side of it

cos i tend to do this

SacharissaCripslock · 23/09/2010 19:40

That's so wrong. Grin

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 23/09/2010 19:49

OP posts:
MaMoTTaT · 23/09/2010 19:52

well neither is yummy or scrumptious a sound

"oh I say darling this is scrumptious"

(imagine the above said during sex Grin)

YaddahYaddahYaddah · 23/09/2010 20:00

The above sentance isn't a sound - i said the sounds remind me of sex. Get with it.

OP posts:
MaMoTTaT · 23/09/2010 20:01

oh alright then - do you often shout "scrumptious" during sex

gawd you pedant Grin

GeekOfTheWeek · 23/09/2010 20:04

'oh oh oh, harder big boy, harder....faster ohhh yea, truly scrumptious'

Egg · 23/09/2010 20:07

i do it esp when eating with the children. I think i am subconsciously trying to teach them to say it out loud if they like it.

FlyingInTheCLouds · 23/09/2010 20:09

me to egg. I annoy myself though, so OP you may have a point Grin.

JaneS · 23/09/2010 20:50

Um ... ... I think you may be doing sex wrong if you think it sounds like that! Grin
