Dad ogling pg 3 girls in playground

Strolled into school this morning with DS1 (6) to find a dad "reading" pg 3 of the Sun ( norks were in full view of the Year 2 line up ).

I thought this a tad inappropriate and asked him to turn the page, but he was really put out and huffed and puffed at me.

Tell me I was not being unreasonable.

OP, YANBU. I have been in similar situations twice. In the first one, two teenage boys were reading Zoo/Nuts type magazine in a children's playground near to where I was sitting with DD. A man went up to them and told them to put it away or leave. Another time, a man on a train was reading the sex adverts in the back of a tabloid. A girl of about 7 was sat across the aisle from him. The male conductor told him to stop reading those pages or he would have to leave the train.

Why so many people on MN have the opposing view I don't know. In my experience, many men know that you don't look at stuff like page 3 when there are kids around, especially other people's kids. Maybe that is because many men understand at a more personal level what effect such pictures have on them and know they don't look at in front of kids. Some women want to thing it is all just a laugh and minimise the sexual element of it.

As for the legal bit. Well obviously you don't need a lot of draconian laws if people behave with a bit of consideration for others. There shouldn't be a need to have laws around what images children see, because people should act responsibly. Of course exposing children to pornography is already illegal anyway, even when the pornography itself is legal. It is hardly complicated is it? I watch True Blood, and I wouldn't want it banned, but I don't watch it in front of my children, and I certainly wouldn't watch it in front of other people's children.

As for people saying children see the equivalent of page 3 when their mothers walk around in a state of undress in the morning. It it true that my children have seen me walking around with no top on, but I doubt the sun would be interested in publishing the pictures of what I look like at 6.30am on page 3.

"Reproduction is a fact of life. Men need some sort of (often VISUAL) stimuli for this to happen".

Most of the men I've met just need a dick. That seems to be perfectly adequate for the purpose.

Or mayb e this!!

Umm... sex is possible with a flaccid penis? Great sex life you must have PosieParker.

Honestly, I don't know why people are still talking about this. How about something we should actually be bothered about.

HerBeatitude · 22/09/2010 22:01

"Just because you have stated your position, doesn't mean I have to agree with it - funnily enough I am allowed my own 'position'."

Can you tell me where I have told you you have to agree with me?

The overton window has indeed shifted hasn't it? Thinking it is OK to look at porny pictures of women in a school playground, is part of the pornification of our culture.

The reason that my mother woudln't take one of her porny newspapers into a school, is because semi-literate though she is, she understands that they are porny and that there's a big wide world out there where lots of people would be offended by swearing, porn or violence in front of children. So she tries not to offend. She doesn't have such a massive sense of entitlement as the man in the playground.

HerBeatitude · 22/09/2010 22:03

Vanillacupcakes, who has mentioned the dicks in question being flaccid?

Are you quite all right? Grin

sethstarkaddersmum · 22/09/2010 22:05

does she mean if there is no porn around the dicks must be flaccid? that's the only way I can make sense of her post but surely not?

but perhaps the Overton window has moved even further than we thought Confused

HerBeatitude · 22/09/2010 22:07

Blimey, do you think that's what she meant?

If that's the case, it's not posie who needs to be commiserated with on the quality of her sex life. Shock

sethstarkaddersmum · 22/09/2010 22:22

it can't be. hope she comes back soon and tells us not.

MillyR - great post. So good to hear about the conductor. I always thought I would basically have to put up with it on public transport because it's always possible to move seats. But of course it should not be allowed - reading this stuff obviously on trains makes a really unpleasant environment for women passengers.

ChippingIn · 23/09/2010 02:44

HerBeatitude - you keep insisting I don't understand your point, I am merely pointing out that I do understand your point, I just don't agree with it and to you, they seem to be one and the same.

Posie - that's a relevant question how?

NotanOttar - no sorry, I don't 'remember' ???

PosieParker · 23/09/2010 07:09

ChippinIn....Because appropriate behaviour around children is being discussed and I wondered if your line is not drawn at page three I wondered if you had any not defined by law.

Anyone else think VCups posts were off the wall.

NordicPrincess · 23/09/2010 11:12

it would have been more reasonable for you to ask him to stop reading a tabloid newspaper (was it the sun?) and to read something with actual news rather than crap in it. Wouldnt want the young children to be encoraged to read shit like that lol....

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 23/09/2010 13:20

"we feminists are campaigning to ban every magazine which isn't 100% free from sexism" - don't you mean burn? Or have the moonlit rituals been cancelled for tonight?

NotAnOtter - :o:o:o:o:o:o:o (can i borrow that line when you've finishe with it please?)

I used to work somewhere where there were loads of issues of the Sun/Nuts etc around, but when children came onto the site, there was always an effort (from the male readers) to close the mags/cover them up. Always imagined it was because they wouldn't want their own DC seeing this blatantly porny/supposed to be arousing (or what is the point?) stuff at an early age. Second the wonderment that so many people on here don't get this.

sethstarkaddersmum · 23/09/2010 13:25

we're going to ban them, then burn them. Or maybe burn them, then ban them. Still haven't decided which way round to do it. We've been discussing it at our Women's Group for months. Shock

lazylula · 23/09/2010 13:41

I haven't read all the replies but I have to say I do not think I ould even notice whether some one was reading a newspaper or what it was and I certainly wouldn't be looking long enough to see what page they were on. And if I did notice, which is highly unlikely, it probably wouldn't make me think anything of it, not sure why but it would probably not even register as to whether it was appropriate or not! i must be one crap mother!
