To not find this remotely strange

My DS (4) and his best friend (also a little boy) are always saying that they want to marry each other when they grow up. To be honest, I think this is pretty funny and think nothing of it (not that it would bother me in the least if he were gay, just I don't think this is in any way indicative).

However, the best friend's mother seems concerned. When she first mentioned it to me, I laughed, but she has brought it up again and now appears to be overthinking it.

Just looking for opinions on this. AIBU to think that the other mother is fussing unnecessarily about it and that DS saying he wants to marry his friend is not unusual?

She is being a loon. It's completely normal. Dd currently wants to marry her daddy. Grin

taintedpaint · 17/09/2010 20:36

She's being daft. Children this age don't have a real concept of sexuality and even if they did, what's the problem?

YADNBU, and no, it's not unusual.

RobynLou · 17/09/2010 20:36

YANBU I wanted to marry my baby brother when I was 5...

Dione · 17/09/2010 20:36

YANBU, she's being a bit weird though.

BAFE · 17/09/2010 20:36

YANBU - it's normal and quite funny too.

Your friend needs to take the stick out of her ass

Tippychoocks · 17/09/2010 20:37

DD was going to marry Daddy or the dog or grandad. I explained you can't marry family so she announced she will not marry and stay living with me and born her babies by herself.
But I'm not going to hold her to it. Your mate is fussing.

Monty100 · 17/09/2010 20:38

YANBU - and as above, she's a loon.

After all, when dc's were little, ds wanted to marry dd. Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 17/09/2010 20:38

At that age its not unusual for them to want to marry best friends/parents/siblings/the family cat!

Some parents have strange ideas eg. the parents of DS's best friend found it really strange that DS wanted to invite girls to his 5th birthday party Hmm Confused

BooBooGlass · 17/09/2010 20:38

YANBU> My dd is 6 and convinced she is goign to marry her baby brother

nowherewoman · 17/09/2010 20:41

I don't think they really understand the full implications at that age. The terrible fear that takes over some parents at the thought of their child being gay! What does she want you to do about it anyway?

seaturtle · 17/09/2010 20:42

My friend's 3 year old is determined to marry her daddy. Your friend is strange.

nemofish · 17/09/2010 20:44

My dd wants to marry me. Confused

She also claims that she will not marry a boy, but will have 2 babies, one boy and one girl. She will call them Olivia and Davey Potato. Grin

HeathcliffMoorland · 17/09/2010 20:45

Yes, I think she is being odd too!

Just wished to confirm, really.

KickArseQueen · 17/09/2010 20:47

Nemofish please do remind her of that when you become a grandmother Grin

My mum has a video of me on my 5th birthday announcing I am going to marry my sister Grin

(I do love my sister, but, um, no!)

weasle · 17/09/2010 20:53

yanbu

my 4yo wants to marry his 2yo brother 'because he's my best friend'. very sweet i think.

AuntieBulgaria · 17/09/2010 21:05

I think Davey Potato is an EXCELLENT name.

Nemofish - tell your DD to get in touch with Jules Oliver...

My 3 y.o. DD has had her heart set on her friend Bridget for 6 months now.

Horton · 17/09/2010 21:40

Not unusual at all. My 4 year old daughter wants to marry Po or Tinky Winky (or failing that, me). Earlier on, she was lying on the living room floor under a blanket complaining that her husband's snoring was keeping her awake and shouting at her baby doll that it was the middle of the night and could she please go back to sleep RIGHT NOW. I think she's got a pretty good handle on how the world works, actually...

And Davey Potato is a great name.

wondersnuffle · 17/09/2010 21:43

When I was that age I intended to marry a horse, my older sister reminds me about it occasionally. Blush

DP is definitely human Grin

hairytriangle · 17/09/2010 21:44

nahhh, my nephew (7) is convinced he's going to marry his older sis (10) and 'share his seeds' with her Grin

No concept of it at all!

funkychunkymunky · 17/09/2010 21:45

My little brother wanted to marry his friend when he was 5. He's engaged to a lovely woman now Smile

annec555 · 17/09/2010 21:45

She would be worried about my 14 month old - he and his little boy friend give each other big wet snogs on a fairly regular basis!

mumeeee · 17/09/2010 21:49

YANBU. It is normal behavior for young children. Just tell your friend to relax

mitochondria · 17/09/2010 21:50

My 5 year old son told me the other day that he wanted to marry his fleecy blanket. When I told him he couldn't he said "in that case, I'm going to move to another country and marry a dog".
