Went to the gym this afternoon, saw a sign at the front desk "if you'd like your friend to get money off, please leave there details here".

While my card was being swiped, I pointed out it should be "their" and apologised for being anal and laughed and asked if they could change it. Even when I explained the mistake the receptionist still looked at me blankly ....

Were you not tempted to ask her for a loan of her pen when she looked blank? You could have sorted it out in no time...

I didn't ask the question because I felt smug and oh aren't I great, but I thought as this is AIBU I could ask the question of whether I was unreasonable to expect my local gym to know the difference between "there" and "their". If you are going to put a sign out in the public domain, the least you can do is make sure it's spelt correctly surely ???

YANBU. I refuse to enter shops where there is clear apostrophe abuse to be seen in windows.

I once went round all the signs in my previous company and scraped off a rogue apostrophe. Luckily the signs were the sort with stuck on letters, or I would have had to take a bottle of tippex to them.

The sign previously said "No smoking in this building or it's grounds".

I just couldn't bear to look at that apostrophe every day, by every door.

yadnbu. i did actually take tipp-ex to some signs at work i go past another sign with a ridiculous apostrophe every time i enter and leave the main building, i keep wondering if I'd get spotted tipp-exing in a busy corridor. :-) sorry for rubbish typing here though, trying to mn on phone.

Really, with it being singular, it should have read "please leave his or her details", not "their".

a) Make an effort to use words correctly
and
b) Care when a mistake is pointed out to them

We all make mistakes, but I would be prefer to be corrected rather than to carry on being wrong.

I think it's far more effective to write to the manager and tell them. The receptionist is almost certainly not going to care, and even if she did she might feel silly going to her boss and asking that the sign be changed. I used to work somewhere with the odd misspelt sign and it annoyed me, but it was frustrating when customers pointed it out to me. I felt I couldn't really do anything about it, and I doubted my boss would welcome being corrected by me, the lowest in the pecking order.

Funny I was just going to start a thread asking advice on whether to contact DD1's school to mention this (found in home school agreement):

"I agree to work positively within the school and suport it's aims, rules and abide by it's sanctions policy"

and

"discrete jewellery only to be worn."

I am concerned that to mention it would mark my card at the school, but I am saddened that these documents are allowed to be distributed.

Please please stop! I love such errors so that I can point them out to the children and ask if they can spot what's wrong if anything!!! Helps them to feel really clever and passes the time when waiting.
