to not understand why people are so negative about red hair

As my DD's hair grows it looks like she is going to be a red head.

She is only 11 months old and already we have had quite a few negative comments the latest being "at least she will be able to dye it when she gets older"

I just don't get it! why is having red hair looked upon as a bad thing? its just a hair colour FFS. And why do so many people think its ok to make jokes about redheads?

If a person makes an derogatory comment about a persons skin colour there is uproar but red heads seem to just be fair game

After one to many
"Well his hair colour will change(DS), so it's ok" from DP I finally snapped.
Why should it change, what's wrong with his red hair?
"He'll get teased" Sad
Nobody else has said anything in a negative way to me. All positive, except his Dad, 'cause he'll get teased', he'll be over 6ft 5", good luck to anybody that teases him.
I spent my childhood getting teased for my red hair mostly from the only non-white girl in my year, I knew it wasn't fair then.
No OP you YANBU

Riven - the Romans, Angles and Saxons were the invaders who drove the Celts (or Ancient Britons if you prefer - Celt is a disputed term) to the margins: Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, Ireland. So it makes sense to argue prejudice against red-heads could have originally been an English (or people who would eventually become the English) bias against Celts.

Dunno how relevant that is the best part of 1,500 years later but suppose it could be a dim folk memory.

stickylittlefingers · 05/09/2010 15:08

edam it always puzzled me that there were more redheads around (or so it seemed to me) in the West country where I grew up, but in Ireland there seemed to be many more really dark haired (pale skin, black hair) or just brown as-per-usuals. All very disappointing! Maybe I lived in the wrong bit of Ireland.

Riven's right edam. The whole "Celtic" culture thing has been over-played and the main things that the so-called Celtic countries have in common are related languages and rainy weather. Particularly in Cornwall and Wales, if there is a physical "type" then it is short, dark and stocky (This maybe because of the Iberian influence.) I can say this as a red headed Welsh person living in Cornwall! The relative abundance of red headed people seems to be more of an Irish and Scots thing than a pan-"Celtic" nations thing, and seeing as the Scots were more of a threat than the Welsh and Cornish were, and the Irish were a thorn in the English Crown's side for so many centuries, perhaps that's where the English antipthy came from. Maybe the red haired and pale skinned thing came from there being less of a need to melanin in the skin in the far north? Perhaps the Irish/Scots connection originated with the Scotti tribe in Ulster who colonised Scotland? Perhaps I'm just musing and therefore talking out of my backside? Who knows? It's interesting to speculate though.

Has anyone mentioned this festival - it's this weekend, so we've missed this year's, but I'd rather like to take ds1 one day - he's the most beautiful golden redhead.

DinahRod · 05/09/2010 15:25

We have a brunette, blonde and probably auburn.

Dh finds some shades of red hair startling as he is very colour blind, reds/ greens/ golds are very similar to him.

JosieRosie · 05/09/2010 16:02

stickylittlefingers, you're quite right. All this stuff about Irish people and red hair is complete hooey. My parents are Irish and I grew up there and I can confirm that there are no more natural red-heads there than there are in UK. Most people have brown hair, with varying shades of skin tone, there are a few blondes too.

I'm a red head by choice Grin and very proud of it too but it drives me mad when people associate it with being Irish, ditto Scottish
Let's smash the stereotypes!

ZZZenAgain · 05/09/2010 16:03

I don't get it either I love red hair. What about all those hair dyes with a red light in them, how come they are so popular?

ZZZenAgain · 05/09/2010 16:05

I never think of red hair as Celtic really. I associate it more with Vikings - which is probably also tosh lol

i'm a natural red head, and i hate it :( even more so the obscenely pale complexion that seems to come with it. thankfully both my dd and ds turned out blonde, although it was touch and go with ds, however when he is in the sun you can see a slight red tint Shock

TheSmallClanger · 05/09/2010 16:52

My DH and all of my serious boyfriends previously were redheads of varying shades. nothing wrong with a bit o' ginge.

TheSmallClanger · 05/09/2010 16:53

Actually, DH still is a redhead, although his has gone from auburn to brassy ginger.

Lucilastic · 05/09/2010 17:15

I have no idea. People are generally ignorant f**kers.
I love red hair. Wish I had it but sadly I got boring mousy brown which needs a ton of highlights to be remotely interesting...and even that's debatable.
Red hair rocks!

Lucilastic · 05/09/2010 17:17

My kids also have that sludgy boring brown hair that will be mousy in a few years.
Your DC is lucky.
