We live in Dorset, and I don't really care too much if this thread is identifying.

Ds is really into nature and is very good at spotting newts, grass snakes etc.

We went to Thorncombe Woods the other day, where there is a lovely pond with tons of wild swamp life. It's always quite busy up there, loads of dog shit as soon as you come out of the car park, but it's really lovely once you walk on a bit.

Anyway, DS all excited about planned nature observation. but YET again, it's ruined because of bloody great dogs splashing about in the pool, and then shaking themselves over me and my kids, whilst their stupid owners sit and stare at them.

Grrrr

And there are numerous signs asking dog owners to keep their beasts on leads.

I'm with you, Capricorn76!

weegiemum · 04/09/2010 16:04

I've never met a dog owner who doesn't think that their dog is really well behaved and that they are a responsible owner.

I have met many dog owners who are right on this.

But please would dog owners stop saying "oh no he wouldn't hurt a fly" and "she's just a big softy".

Cos no matter what you say, some dogs can be unpredictable.

My son survived a savage attack by a border collie as a toddler, and the dog owner yelled at me for hitting his dog with a stick as it (literally) tried to rip my ds's throat out - he had 2 surgeries and a blood transfusion adn is still scarred- one of his shoulder veins was torn through his winter coat.

I reported to the police but the dog/owner was never found.

What did I hear? "You B* stop hitting my dog he's a big softy it wasn't him!!! My dog would never do that"

It was. It did. My ds will carry the scars for life.

I hate going to a park/beach and finding dog poo!!! I must also note some of the things that HUMANS leave behind can also be offensive e.g used nappies not wrapped up.

BoojaB · 04/09/2010 16:50

weegiemum, this is exactly why I mean that children (actually the parents) should behave responsibly around dogs.

My dog, to date, has been incredibly good. As she ages, this could change. She could turn out to be a grumpy old woman, like me.

happiestblonde · 04/09/2010 16:56

Capricorn well said about loud kids in restaurants - if your DCs cannot behave then please god stay out of nice restaurants. The amount of times I had to waste time cleaning up after devil children when I was a waitress while at university... children throwing bowls of cut up spaghetti on the floor while their parents look on saying ooooh aren't they sweet are pretty similar to dog owners letting their dogs run wild.

The answer to this is simple - dog owners keep your dogs under control if they are off leads in areas designed for children, or take them to a park/forest where families don't go so much.

Child owners - try to be tolerant

Animation · 04/09/2010 17:36

Weegiemum - I'm sorry to hear what happened to your son. I don't know about a stick - but I'd have booted the dog good and hard, no messing.Angry

BoojaB · 04/09/2010 17:47

Animation, I'm sure weegiemum did everything she could!

Animation · 04/09/2010 17:52

BoojaB - you can do an empathic response then. I was starting to wonder with your insensitive "children should behave responsibly around dogs" remark.

CommonSenseSuze · 04/09/2010 18:09

Well said Boojab and Capricorn. Very annoying when kids descend on us when we're walking our dog. He get very frightened and its hard to tell the children to clear off if the adults are encouraging them.

Animation · 04/09/2010 18:14

Whoa!! CommonSenseSuze - all this blame blame blame heaped on the children - what you like !!

Tiredmumno1 · 04/09/2010 18:15

i always take my kids hands when dogs are close by so i expect the same in return that you put the leash on your dogs til we are far enough away, then we can all carry on peacefully.

and to the dog owners that dont pick up after your dogs - you are disgusting, you should not be allowed to keep one if you cant clear up after it. its fecking vile and you know it!

ivykaty44 · 04/09/2010 18:15

Perhaps the dog owners can't read the signs asking them to keep their dogs on a lead, anymore than parents can't read the sign saying no children further than this point in the bar of a pub with a lovely consevertory and area beside particularly for families with children.

You can get small machines which makes sounds that onyl dogs and chidlren can hear and you will find then they stay away.

it is also ideal when travelling as stray dogs may not be welcome and dangerous

here, you can get one which fits in your pocket

CommonSenseSuze · 04/09/2010 18:19

Animation i'm not putting all the blame on children.

You on the other hand are putting on the blame on dogs and dog owners. Typical blinkered paranoia. Like capricorn said if you hate dogs you should stay in doors, and wash the kids' cotton wool suits.

weegiemum · 04/09/2010 18:23

The owner only saw the stick (was too far away) to see me kicking the dog in the chest as it savaged my ds!!!

In an area surrounded by "Dogs MUST be on a lead" signs!!

Tiredmumno1 · 04/09/2010 18:27

After all the attacks that happen, the law should now change to dogs have to be on leads at all times

CommonSenseSuze · 04/09/2010 18:33

Lol @ Tiredmumno! There are over 11m pet dogs in Britain! How often they could attacks been avoided too, if adults had been acting responsibly?

Let's lock up all men too, in case they're paedophiles!

There are a lot of really stupid people on this thread!

CommonSenseSuze · 04/09/2010 18:35

Yes, I know I'm going to get a lot of "you're the stupid one", with lots of swearing now.

Really couldn't care less.

Animation · 04/09/2010 18:35

CommonSenseSuze - I'm putting the blame on that arsehole who's dog savaged weegiemum's child. Did you read that story?

Your "you hate dogs" thing doesn't work on me.

activate · 04/09/2010 18:36

there is nothing nicer than watching a dog play in water then shake itself dry

now that's nature!

weegiemum · 04/09/2010 18:38

Nature yes?

Do you also enjoy watching dogs savage 2 yo children.

Also "nature". no?

curlymama · 04/09/2010 18:38

Dog owners are to blame for any problems in exactly the same way as parents. We have a puppy, nearly 5 months old, and the amount of parents that have allowed their children to come and stroke him without asking us first is astounding!

There are even children that come up and start playing with the puppy without even making eye contact with us when we are just walking down the road and puppy is on a lead.

There have been two occassions when we have been in the beer garden of a dog friendly pub, with the dog close to us on a lead and we have turned around to see toddlers being acively encouraged to stroke the puppy. When I have been eating, and can't see what's going on behind me. That is not only incredibly rude and presumtuous, but it's obvious that our puppy is still very young. He's out of the nipping fingers stage now, but when he was first allowed out I couldn't believe that parents would do this, especially without asking. You don't expect your toddler to behave perfectly all the time, but you are expecting my ten week old puppy to know not to bite when you allow your child to stick his or her fingers in the dogs' mouth.

I always praise the children who ask to stroke our dog, and tell the children that don't ask that they should. But their own parents should tell them before I have to or a dog does bite them.

Tiredmumno1 · 04/09/2010 18:39

And common i am not stupid just realistic, i am sure other countries have that law.

so no need to name call!
