We live in Dorset, and I don't really care too much if this thread is identifying.

Ds is really into nature and is very good at spotting newts, grass snakes etc.

We went to Thorncombe Woods the other day, where there is a lovely pond with tons of wild swamp life. It's always quite busy up there, loads of dog shit as soon as you come out of the car park, but it's really lovely once you walk on a bit.

Anyway, DS all excited about planned nature observation. but YET again, it's ruined because of bloody great dogs splashing about in the pool, and then shaking themselves over me and my kids, whilst their stupid owners sit and stare at them.

Grrrr

And there are numerous signs asking dog owners to keep their beasts on leads.

Curleymama

Dogs share our planet but there IS a pecking order. Men, women and children first in the water.

coffeeinbed · 03/09/2010 20:33

All the rest get in the boats! Grin

CheckingCheques · 03/09/2010 20:34

I hate the dirty pigs that let their dog poo and don't clean it up. If I took DD into the middle of the park, pulled her pants down and let her do a big turd, that would be shocking enough. But to then walk away and leave it!!!! Just vile. Manky gits

I don't mind dogs, just those manky mingin owners

Animation · 03/09/2010 20:35

Riven

You had to "wash the ground"!!

Best laugh of the day Grin

curlymama · 03/09/2010 20:35

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect your children to get a little bit dirty when they go to a park, especiallyone with water that you are planning to sit right next to. Even more so if you want to be close enough to see the bugs.

And the dogs, children women and men can share the water!

onagar · 03/09/2010 20:36

Lots of anti dog-owner threads at the moment because two more children were savaged this week by dogs.

Those who can't understand why anyone would care about that please report to your GP and ask to be referred to a psychiatrist.

undercovamutha · 03/09/2010 20:36

Had the same thing happen the other day when we were at a local nature reserve. There was a sign saying all dogs on leads, but one guy's dog was running all over the place, no lead.

My mum (who is much more interfering forthright than I could ever be!) pointed out to the man that the dog should be on a lead, and the man just said it wasn't necessary cos his dog was very well behaved. Hmm The dog then proceeded to jump up on my DD and scare her shitless.

Vallhala · 03/09/2010 20:39

Just as I should go to the suoermarket prepared with earplugs for when someone else's little darling screams.

It's undesirable particularly as I don't like other people's children in the main, far less those who scream, but they have as much right as I to be in Sainsbury's and it really isn't worth stressing over imo.

Far more important to me is this.

Animation · 03/09/2010 20:41

How are you going to see any bugs with the men women and children and dogs in the water...and the rest in the boats?

JustVicki · 03/09/2010 20:41

Question crazy dog haters...

If there was a child in your park of choice that swore, or spat, or pushed your child down, would you want all children banned or would you blame the irresponsible parent for not keeping better control over their little sprog?

I dont even own a dog but I feel a healthy dose of tollerance in order.

babartheelephant · 03/09/2010 20:43

I met someone the other day who told me proudly that he walks his dog really early every morning because then nobody will see his dog do its business on the pavement so he doesn't have to pick it up. Horrified!
And I love dogs too. And my children love dogs too.
But I went for a walk down a country lane with my niece the other day and a big dog from local farmer was bouncing around us and barking very loudly. I was not in the least bit concerned but when I looked at my niece she was literally quaking in her wellies with tears pouring down her face. I felt so awful that I had not appreciated that not everyone loves dogs. I told her he was just talking to her in his barky voice and not to be scared.
As for dogs in ponds, well, dogs love water, and if they are allowed off their leads, they will jump in it. That's dogs for you.

It seems much worse in London where non-doggie people really hate dog owners and their dogs. Which is a shame.

I'm not a cat person at all though. I'd sooner have 10 dogs than a cat!

hormonesnomore · 03/09/2010 20:44

animation I expect Riven washed the ground because she didn't want to get dog shit all over her daughter's wheelchair wheels.

You find that funny? Hmm

MistsandMellowMilady · 03/09/2010 20:45

This from FB about a dog needing a home:

"Well he has nervous aggression, so he will need to go to a calm experienced home that will give him confidence. So it would very much depend on the home and the kids involved.

It would need special kids who aren't hectic around dogs. I'm not sure it would be a brilliant idea to place him in a kid-home, but it would very much depend on the individual home. Some people have their kids under better control than their dogs! (although I think that's rare!)"

WTF? Do people really find excuses to place damaged dogs with children by pre-blaming the parents of the children?

I don't believe it. Valhalla?

intolerant and don't read threads pinkchaffinch ok thread is now hidden

coffeeinbed · 03/09/2010 20:52

I have my dog because my child's off to uni, DH's always away and he's lovely to have around. The dog, that is.
It doesn't make me stupid or selfish.
I pick up and watch him all the time. he is the soppiest happiest dog ever.
There's so much hate around!

I don't hate dogs. In fact I'd love to have one but I don't. I work & don't have time to devote to training, exercising and keeping a dog company/amused. I can't afford to feed a dog well and pay vet's fees.

What I hate is

irresponsible owners who don't train their pets to be well-mannered. Who don't recognise when an animal is unpredictable and bad-natured around people, especially children.

Because children are far more important than any dog.

Animation · 03/09/2010 21:01

Whoa!! Hormones - It's not cleaning up the mess that amused me - it was the use of the word "ground" - the way she told ir - that's what tickled me. :)

Itsonme · 03/09/2010 21:03

Dogs are twats. End of.

pinkthechaffinch · 03/09/2010 21:06

Good post, hormones.

I completely agree, I had a spaniel as a teenager, which I adored. I do not hate dogs, although I dislike the look of many breeds.

I choose not to have a dog now because I wouldn't want to pick up its shit, spend ages training it when I have young dcs.

Don't get me started about dogs on crowded beaches, that's a whole other thread.

yanbu...am so fecked off with my children being scared by out of control dogs, not being able to run in the park without fear of being pounced on/slobbered over/covered in dog filth that my tolerance has run dry. everyone SAYS they're responsible owners, but clearly that's not the case, because we get thread after thread like this. frankly dog owners have relegated my children to second class citizens - they can't use public spaces freely because of uncontrolled dogs. if you can't see why this makes people angry then you are a moron.

and breathe.

NestaFiesta · 03/09/2010 21:11

Just Vicki- in answer to your question "Question crazy dog haters...

If there was a child in your park of choice that swore, or spat, or pushed your child down, would you want all children banned or would you blame the irresponsible parent for not keeping better control over their little sprog? "

I personally would like to ban teenagers from play areas meant for very small children but its not really feasible, so in answer to your question, yes, in a way. (reasons: grafitti, loud swearing, hogging the baby swings, litter). The parents can't really take them home on a lead.

I am not a "crazy dog hater" and I don't like being labelled as such for not being a dog fan. We are not all dog haters (they scare me), but SOME dog owners are not as responsible as others and it makes some people regard dogs as more of a nuisance than they might be to a dog lover.

I was recently very annoyed when a woman let her 3 very large dogs off a lead in a children's play area that had signs saying that dogs must be on leads. One of her dogs was really a large bear. When I asked (politely), if they were her dogs, she replied yes they were. I then said "they should really be on a lead, its a children's play area". She pointed to the bear and said "THAT dog?" and she actually laughed at me as if I was being ridiculous. Owners like that can give dogs and dog owners a bad name.

Calling non dog lovers "crazy dog haters" is a bit rude really. I would not insult a dog lover in the same vein.
