to think that pre cut veg is lazy

I don't intend to discuss the merits of pre-cut fruits here . I think we all have better things to do than chop up a mango.

But, ready sliced mushrooms? Why?

And ready topped and tailed runner beans?

And chopped onions. yes I can see the point re crying etc, however they come in such uniform little dice that i think they are quite freaky. I used them once and they were horrible, and all dry so didn't caremisle properly.

I love a pre sliced mushroom. I can't bear washing the buggers.

poshwellies · 01/09/2010 23:57

you don't need to wash mushrooms.

You wipe mushrooms.

poshwellies · 01/09/2010 23:58

and I've never peeled a squash

Skin is edible so just chop and shove in the oven.

Rockbird · 01/09/2010 23:59

But then your casserole tastes of mud...

[easily confused emoticon]

poshwellies · 02/09/2010 00:02

How so?

You wipe mushrooms with a damp cloth, there ends dirt situation.

Casserole cooks things for about 3 hours, would think all specks of dirt is gone after 20mins.

I never peel carrots either

Mumi · 02/09/2010 01:15

I'm not lazy - I have dyspraxia, which for me means that chopping up vegetables often means accidentally cutting my hands, and on one occasion losing a fingertip.
YABU Angry

carebear321 · 02/09/2010 01:22

Its not lazy just saves time and saves waste.

gtamom · 02/09/2010 06:07

I do buy pre cut mushrooms and sometimes pineapple.Grin
I am definitely lazy enough to buy all precut produce, (I have a chopped anyways due to hand pain, but that means higher chances of bacteria, and less nutrients. So my hypochondria wins over laziness.

gtamom · 02/09/2010 06:08

Grrrr. Why do I always see the errors too late. Chopper, not chopped.

AbsofCroissant · 02/09/2010 09:20

SPB - I don't think it was me. I'm pretty sure this is the first time i mentioned it on MN.

Riven - it does work! and no, I don't have an egg slicer. I don't even have a cheese grater, so egg slicer is way beyond current kitchen utensil capabilities.

And yes, I have to confess, be careful as you get too carried away, it can break the egg slicer. So maybe stock up on 99p ones ...
Egg slicers can also be used to slice mozarella (very satisfying), and are less likely to break in this instance.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 02/09/2010 09:23

I never peel Carrots, or Squash either! Just like i don't de-seed Squash because when you roast the seeds they go like Peanuts and taste delicious!

onadietcokebreak · 02/09/2010 09:32

Is frozen diced onions lazy too?

Im seriously thinking that pre cut is veg is the only way I will have time to put a meal in the slow cooker before I leave for Uni at silly o clock soon.....

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/09/2010 11:27

Ransacked my kitchen cupboards and couldn't find the egg slicer.

DD told me she may have taken it to school last term (WHY? to slice up rubbers??)

So couldn't test Abs's musrhoom slicing theory.

Dammit.

No, I don't wash or wipe mushrooms. I may flick off a spec of dirt if it is obvious but generally just slice and go.

I buy chopped carrots and swede, as swede requires the strength of a lumberjack to cut through it. Mashed carrot and swede smothered in gravy is one of my favourite things in the world.

I'm going to get DP to drive me to Waitrose as I heard that they sell pre chopped frozen butternut squash. BNS is an absolute pain to chop.

Can't really understand things like mushrooms or onions though.

Hmm at Abs
OK I will believe you this time :)

onadietcokebreak · 02/09/2010 12:29

I used to use egg slicer to cut mushrooms.....it does actually save time!

OatcakeCravings · 02/09/2010 12:41

The thing with mushrooms is to buy the large field mushrooms or portabella mushrooms then all you have to do is peel and chop them - takes two seconds. They also cost the same kg per kg as button mushrooms. Button mushrooms are way too much hassle what with all the wiping etc, and they have far less taste than other types of mushroom.

I promise that the above is true Smile

AbsofCroissant · 02/09/2010 15:57

I wonder if sales of egg slicers will suddenly go up this week?

AbsofCroissant · 02/09/2010 15:58

Could I get credit and money out of this?

piprabbit · 02/09/2010 20:09

I broke my egg slicer by playing guitar riffs on it [shame].

Perhaps I'll buy a new one once the mushroom slicing frenzy is over.
