to think that pre cut veg is lazy

I don't intend to discuss the merits of pre-cut fruits here . I think we all have better things to do than chop up a mango.

But, ready sliced mushrooms? Why?

And ready topped and tailed runner beans?

And chopped onions. yes I can see the point re crying etc, however they come in such uniform little dice that i think they are quite freaky. I used them once and they were horrible, and all dry so didn't caremisle properly.

What about the cans of chopped onions?! Has anyone ever used them? They look vile.

I like chopping mushrooms. They have a good texture for slicing Grin

AMumInScotland · 01/09/2010 17:01

See, I cheerfully make mashed potato from scratch (and will do when I get my arse off MN...). But then I buy pre-chopped veg to put in casseroles. You pays your money and takes your choice!

AllarmBells · 01/09/2010 17:02

Why is "lazy" bad?
Do you scour your doorstep to a blinding whiteness every day and do cat's bum mouth when non-doorstep-scourers pass? Grin

AnnoyingOrange · 01/09/2010 17:02

bleugh at ready made mash - I always make that from scratch

but I do buy a shelled peas and sliced beans combo fairly frequently

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/09/2010 17:02

Nah, this is not meant to be an aresy or judgey thread, I am not (usually) an aresy or judgey person Smile

Perhaps lazy was the wrong word. just wondered really why people bothere to buyt ready chopped mushrooms when they are so quick to slice anyway.

No offence meant to anyone

Anyone who buys pre-cut anything is a slaaaaaaaag. I know this because I do it all the time.

Not mash though. Eww.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/09/2010 17:04

At least I don't buy Smash

I don't think it's lazy so much as expensive and manky - they never cut how I like it, and the edges are always a bit dry and horrid.

I never buy pre-cut fruit either, and am totally boggled by those little packs of pre-plucked grapes. I mean - WHY? How hard is it to pull a grape off a bunch? And surely all they do is sweep up the ones that fall onto the factory floor and then run them under the tap?

tins of onions are brilliant ! great for soups and batch cooking in general

i once had some thermonuclear onions and i swear to you my eye make up melted off and so did a few eyelashes.

i try to avoid chopping hte little buggers ever since

frozen chopped onion is a godsend too

ethelina · 01/09/2010 17:06

No problem with precut per se, but the carrots always taste of nothing. Broccoli as well. Mushrooms, green beans, onions, parsnips, yes. Carrots NO NO NO.

Also where's the fun in pre-mashed potato? Half the thing is to take out all your stresses on smashing the masher into the pan as hard and loudly as possible! Its what makes cooking potatoes worth the effort IMO.

5DollarShake · 01/09/2010 17:07

I think you're on very tenuous ground approving pre-cut fruit but not pre-cut veg. Grin

theyoungvisiter · 01/09/2010 17:07

see now THAT'S madness GOML. I may not want to buy pre-chopped onions, but at least I can see they have a place in society for those who don't wish to do their own chopping.

But pre-cut grapes - I refuse to believe their is any societal need for them Grin

Go on - convince me!

FloraFinching · 01/09/2010 17:08

I have Smash in the cupboard.

But it's for adding to home-made bread when I've no potato water left.

Have I achieved slaaaag/domestic goddess equilibrium?

pommedeterre · 01/09/2010 17:10

Pre cut beans are actually environmentally friendly as the waste is left in kenya rather than using carbon being airfreighted to the Uk to be thrown in the bin.
So pre cut veg is actually SAVING THE WORLD.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/09/2010 17:10

No, there is no need (I blame the special offer in tesco that made me buy bags of grapes).

I never think twice about chopping onions as I wear contact lenses and that stops the onion tears (strange but true).

GOML- I was brought up on Smash as a child.
I decided to buy some last year as a sort of retro joke- so disgusting.
But when I was 10 it was quite nice with a Fray Bentos pie and peas Smile

Lauriefairycake · 01/09/2010 17:11

I have done myself a mischief every Burns night for ten years trying to diembowel a turnip. Those things are hard as fuckGrin

I now by M&S creamed turnip in a microwaveable ready meal.

So, shoot me Rabbie!

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/09/2010 17:12

I lied about the Smash.

It is a storecupboard emergency (to be consumed when have a hangover with half a pound of cheese grated in)

OOOH clever theory pommedeterre - world saving domestic management. Grin

OP posts:
deaddei · 01/09/2010 17:13

Hasn't there been a tread today about people who LIE on MN???
(looks sternly at GOML)

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/09/2010 17:14

lolol 'so shoot me rabbie'

yes, chopping a swede is a bloody nightmare.

I remember one Christmas eve I couldn't find swede anywhere (mashed swede one of my Christmas lunch mainstays) but found a mixed bag of frozen swede and carrot and spent chrostimas eve picking out all the chinks of carrot from 3 bags of it.

It was disgusting - frozen swede is vile.
