to think that pre cut veg is lazy

I don't intend to discuss the merits of pre-cut fruits here . I think we all have better things to do than chop up a mango.

But, ready sliced mushrooms? Why?

And ready topped and tailed runner beans?

And chopped onions. yes I can see the point re crying etc, however they come in such uniform little dice that i think they are quite freaky. I used them once and they were horrible, and all dry so didn't caremisle properly.

What if the people eating the pre-cut grapes are using that saved time to save small children/the whales?

When I was a child my DM tried to turn Smash into a pizza through some mis-guided insanity. I haven't been the same ever since.

deaddei · 01/09/2010 17:18

I love swede and turnips but they are buggers to chop.
Creamed turnip sounds good- but is that what I would call swede (the big orange one)?

TrillianAstra · 01/09/2010 17:19

If you have pre-stripped grapes how can you dangle them into your mouth like a Roman being fed by a slave?

borderslass · 01/09/2010 17:20

deaddei turnip is the white one and smaller.

awful stuff riven

AbsofCroissant · 01/09/2010 17:21

Depends where it's from Riven - the stuff from M&S is fabulous (but still not as good as homemade to be honest)

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/09/2010 17:23

I get the waitrose or Sainsos taste the differnec mash with cheese.

I don't think i would bother from Asda.

It is NOT as nice as homemade, far from it, but is probably healthier as I tend to put half a piund of butter and cream in my homemade mash.

And is less hassle than making your own when just come in from a hard day at work

I'm getting an alligator

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/09/2010 17:26

Isnt all food you buy in a supermarket lazy?

Hell, if you want to go the non lazy route then you should grow all your own fruit and vegetables, grind your own flour for cakes and bread, breed your own cattle and pigs for meat, build your own little ocean for keeping a good healthy supply of cod and haddock and erm grow your own spaghetti??

DomesticG0ddess · 01/09/2010 17:26

What's the difference between buying a pre-sliced mango and pre-chopped mushrooms?????

sloanypony · 01/09/2010 17:28

Just about any service you pay for could be considered lazy by someone who either doesn't mind doing it, or can't afford to outsource it.

Having a cleaner is lazy. Getting someone to cut your lawn is lazy. Precut veg, lazy. Getting your hair done, lazy. Who cares!

There's pre-cut veg and there's pre-cut veg. Chefs selection with the carrots, corgette, etc is pretty good in terms of what you get once it is cooked. Those pre done carrot batons from Tesco, however, are not.

I love the Sofferito or whatever they call it (Mirepoix of veg, basically, to start off a bolognaise or soup) from Waitrose - by god I have better things to do than peel and dice carrot, onion, celery and leek just to start a frikkin casserole!

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/09/2010 17:30

Sloany yes the soffrito is a good idea.

Perhaps it is just me being cackhanded, but I cannot for the life of me slice a mango without having to wrench the stone out and making a mess everywhere. Mushrooms are easy peasy in compariosn.

OP posts:
DilysPrice · 01/09/2010 17:33

OMG! Do Waitrose do Soffritto! OMG! They Do!

I was going to be all judgy about lazy people (except the ones with arthritis) who can't be arsed to chop veg, but I am now going to use pre-prepared soffritto every day until I run out of money (and actually it costs about the same as a bunch of celery of which you would use one stalk for your soffritto).

Is this just directed at mushrooms? I can kind of see where you're coming from -they are easy peasy to slice, and even if you do get annoyed with them (which I frequently do) you can always use an egg slicer to slice them.

LetThereBeRock · 01/09/2010 17:36

What's the difference between buying a pre-sliced mango and pre-chopped mushrooms.

You don't lose a digit or two when chopping mushrooms.

ethelina · 01/09/2010 17:37

Whats so difficult about cubing a mango?

UnePrune · 01/09/2010 17:38

lol
Instead of disembowelling a neep (swede) just CUT IT into big pieces and then peel the skin off (two peels). Then chop it.

BalloonSlayer · 01/09/2010 17:38

Ahem . . . as I said on "the other thread" it must be the texture of mushrooms that some people can't cope with.

I used to have a friend who couldn't bear the texture of cotton wool. She had to buy cotton wool balls because she couldn't bear to tear it. One day - da da DAAAAA! - the shop had sold out and only had normal cotton wool. So I had to tear it all into little bits for her.

I don't like the feel of brown thick cardboard. I hate carrying heavy cardboard boxes because you have to grip it really tight. Shudder.

LetThereBeRock · 01/09/2010 17:39

Mangos are evil. They want your blood.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2010 17:39

lol only on MN :o

Go on - mangos are pear shaped, how can they be easily cubed?

ABF I planted a spaghetti tree but I think it was in the wrong soil :( Just a few pieces of fusilli, other than that nothing

mistletoekisses · 01/09/2010 17:45

I always have a bag of frozen cut veg in the freezer - fab for quick/ emergency suppers. Does that count? If so, YABU. They are a godsend.

Cubing mango is easy, plus the best bit is then sucking the skin and stone. You don't know what you're missing I tell ya!

colditz · 01/09/2010 17:45

no, laziness is saying "Guess what? We are having a special dinner tonight, it's ham sandwiches with some baked beans to dip them in! YAAAAYYYYYYY!"

colditz · 01/09/2010 17:46

precut mushrooms? That's what butter knives are for. "Come here, little Timmy, put your sippy cup down and let me show you some helping jobs for Mummy!"
