to think that pre cut veg is lazy

I don't intend to discuss the merits of pre-cut fruits here . I think we all have better things to do than chop up a mango.

But, ready sliced mushrooms? Why?

And ready topped and tailed runner beans?

And chopped onions. yes I can see the point re crying etc, however they come in such uniform little dice that i think they are quite freaky. I used them once and they were horrible, and all dry so didn't caremisle properly.

Yes, I will concede that green beans and sweetcorn work :)

Bonsoir · 01/09/2010 18:26

I buy topped and tailed beans, because topping and tailing beans is tedious in the extreme.

But most pre-prepared vegetables are tasteless. That, rather than my own guilt at being lazy, is the deal-breaker!

I usually feel virtuous, not lazy, when I save time and am more efficient Wink.

sloanypony · 01/09/2010 18:44

Its more likely to be the non-starch-polysacchride (fibre) structure that makes it go weird frozen. Water is water and its either frozen and solid or defrosted and...well...water...

,seeker realizes there isn't a small enough type face to confess about the frozen mashed potato and slinks away with her tail between her legs>

Morloth · 01/09/2010 20:14

YANBU, it is lazy, which is why I buy it, I cannot be arsed, am very lazy indeed. I don't consider this a character flaw.

RandyRussian · 01/09/2010 20:18

What next? Pre-frozen ice cubes? Pre-grated cheese? Grin

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2010 20:23

I have an egg slicer and used it to slice a mushroom on the advice of some mumsnetter and it broke.

OK it was a cheapy 99p one

YunoYurbubson · 01/09/2010 20:29

has anyone got an alligator? Are they worth it? Shall I start a new thread

BrandyAlexander · 01/09/2010 20:30

What about butternut squash? I always buy pre-chopped as they're a nightmare to chop! Surely, no one can defend buying that whole?! :)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/09/2010 21:00

An alligator? Confused

Morloth · 01/09/2010 21:00

Ice cubes, grated cheese, prechopped frozen herbs and garlic I buy them all and waitrose now have this excellent bag of mixed chopped onions, carrot & celery - my stews just got even easier.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2010 21:00

Ah ok.

I have one of these here

I use it loads to do onions, 'grate' carrot etc for casseroles, and the stick part is v.good for blending soups etc.

VirginonRidiculous · 01/09/2010 22:13

You also need to be introduced to the Mango slicer. Place in the midle of the mango, push down and HEY PRESTO! no masseeve pip. I bought it in House of Fraser. Don't miss out on mango joy, buy one.

deakell · 01/09/2010 22:31

Noviceoftheday, I always buy butnut squash whole.

Well in fairness, I don't choose them, they come in my weekly vegbox delivery and sometime the feckers sit there for months.

That said, I find it very strangely satisfying peeling, gutting and cubing them.

I also quite like peeling and finely chopping carrot and swede too.

Yes, I do realise I am not normal Smile

TitsalinaBumSquash · 01/09/2010 22:38

I prechop all my onions (in the MagiMix) and then freeze the buggers, but to be fair i was a quite respected chef in my local area and still got mocked because of the amount i cried whilst doing Onions....

piprabbit · 01/09/2010 22:39

Frozen chopped onions have transformed my cooking... as I've got older my eyes have got more sensitive to onions. Chopping an onion leaves me doubled over with pain, unable to open my eyes, frantically splashing face with water etc.etc. It had got to the point where I was choosing recipes based on the need to chop onions.

Now I can cook what I want - hurrah Grin.

VirginonRidiculous · 01/09/2010 22:41

Frozen onion and frozen peas. It is the way.

greenbananas · 01/09/2010 23:54

If I could afford pre-chopped veg. then I would buy it. Even if I felt guilty.

Slicing mushrooms in an egg slicer is an amazing idea!
