To get annoyed that a middle class life style is not "real life"?

I don't get- why is trying to move to a nice, safe and quiet area with a good school not "real life" as some people like to tell me?

How is this any less "real" that living in a crime ridden, ugly area with an unsafe school?

Seems its only real life if your let your child actually live in the middle of all sorts...

Does anyone else get this attitude sometimes?

Um ... I don't understand. Who said this to you ?

HoopyFroodDude · 31/08/2010 18:06

Is this a thread about a thread ?

No- just in real life not on the board. I mean when I tell people of my aspirations to be in a better area I normally get the answer "at least where you live is real life".

if your life is so fabulous why do you care?

MrsMadWriggle · 31/08/2010 18:10

Are you a real woman?

Bonsoir · 31/08/2010 18:10

Don't worry, it's just envy - a way of trying to put you down because you have something nice.

Roseflower · 31/08/2010 18:10

Do people mean they don't understand the attitude on my question?!

what an odd thing for them to say, why would anyone WANT to live in a crime ridden, ugly area with bad schools?

i think Riven is right, they mean "sheltered"

my DDs have the most sheltered life ever. lucky them, and lucky us is what i say/think.

Roseflower · 31/08/2010 18:13

CerealOffender but my life isnt so fabulous- I live in a horrible area hence the problem. (Not that im not ungrateful for many great things I do have)

Just find it odd people class certain things as "real life"

no some people do like it - friends of ours have a £1m+ house in a dodgy area of London. they love it, cos it's "real life". Confused [sceptical]

when they leave their house they are surrounded by "real" people, with "real" lives, not middle class sheltered people with enough money, good jobs etc.

PosieParker · 31/08/2010 18:15

How ludicrous, all life is real life. Unless they're talking in Street language and are thinking that reewl liiife is only had if you're in da hood.

Sheltered and quiet are just perfect.

Bonsoir · 31/08/2010 18:15

It's no less real to live in an area/time/place where everything is lovely to living in an area/time/place where everything is awful. Humans have lived in many different circumstances across the globe and over time and none is less real than any other.

megonthemoon · 31/08/2010 18:16

But it is real life if it is your life so ignore them. I happen to be lucky enough that I live in a nice house in a nice area and have reasonable job security etc. It's no less real than being in the middle of all sorts, it's just a different reality.

Bonsoir · 31/08/2010 18:16

It can be very dull living in an area where everyone is smug and middle-class though.

Roseflower · 31/08/2010 18:19

Bonsoir My thoughts exactly!

So what they mean "real lfe"= unsheltered?

OP posts:
PosieParker · 31/08/2010 18:19

Can't imagine you would live anywhere with those smug people BonsoirHmmWink.

ShadeofViolet · 31/08/2010 18:23

Stuff does happen in the suburbs though - do you not watch Desperate Housewives?

BarmyArmy · 31/08/2010 18:24

Bonsoir - smug and middle-class? Ugh!

Far better to be salt-fo-the-earth, working-class folk, eh??! Hmm
