to want people to keep their contact lenses in their eyes where they belong

My fil always comes to our house, takes on of his contact lenses out then puts it on a windowsill or other inappropriate surface.

Just before he leaves he then licks it and puts it back in his eye v

He announces both these things.

I know IABU but I find it really offensive, although don't know why.

yuck.

fedupofnamechanging · 29/08/2010 15:00

Gross. YANBU. Throw them in the bin, then deny all knowledge.

MixedNutPlate · 29/08/2010 15:02

LOL Karma.

A drop of Hot pepper sauce for when he licks it/them.

LouMacca · 29/08/2010 15:05

YANBU. Why does he do this? Surely he can't see without them? Licks them?1 That is gross and extremely un-hygienic - he could easily get an eye infection leaving them around and licking them Shock

I wear contact lenses and don't put them anywhere other than in my eyes or my contact lens case!

sanielle · 29/08/2010 15:07

Just tell him not to? That is disgusting.

Tee2072 · 29/08/2010 15:18

Its very 'old school' to lick them and pop them back in and very common when lenses were hard, rather than soft.

Always has been and will be gross, though!

compo · 29/08/2010 15:19
Shock just wait til he gets an eye infection and has to have his eye scraped , he'll soon stop doing it
CerealOffender · 29/08/2010 15:25

tell him not to - the minger

MangoTango · 29/08/2010 15:35

"has to have his eye scraped."

Yuck! Is that what happens if you get an eye infection? Never heard of it.

TheBountyMuncher · 29/08/2010 15:36

Urghhh that's horrible!

I've just got some contacts, and when I went to have the fitting, my optician ran throught the dos and don'ts - one of which was don't lick them. I said " yuck! Who does that?!!"
Now I know! Grin

Tippychoocks · 29/08/2010 15:52

Grimness. I have monthly disposable and it has NEVER occurred to me to lick them. r anything else I put in my body Grin.

NeedToSleepZZZ · 29/08/2010 15:56

thought this was going to be about you spotting my step mother a few days ago- she cleaned hers outside a cafe with perrier water Hmm.
he is disgusting and agree with the hot sauce suggestion.

Carikube · 29/08/2010 15:59

I used to occasionally lick mine back in the days when I had hard lenses Blush though in my defence it was only if my eyes got irritated whilst I was out and about and didn't have any solution to hand - saliva was the only way to make them bearable to put back in again (I'm too blind to get by without them and too tight to throw a hard one away anyway)
I would never take them out at other people's houses though and I've never done this since I have moved to soft lenses...

ChippyMinton · 29/08/2010 16:04

YABU although it is gross.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/08/2010 16:22

Just tell him about the teeny tiny worms that can burrow into your eye and make you go blind

Myleetlepony · 29/08/2010 16:23

You should never lick lenses, my optician has a salutory tale to tell about one of his customers who lost an eye due to licking lenses. Shock

mitochondria · 29/08/2010 16:40

Oh yuk.

Husband has daily disposables. I often find them lying about, little crispy circles covered in eye-juice by the side of the sink.

leplan · 29/08/2010 16:41

I have no idea why he feels to do this. Maybe it's a territory thing.

He is always doing things that I think ate a bit rude and then says, you don't mind do you' in a passive aggressive kind of way.

leplan · 29/08/2010 16:44

Eye juice Shock. Yes! That's why I hate it so much.

rubbersoul · 29/08/2010 17:10

Oh my god! I wear contacts and I have never heard of anyone licking them?! How strange!

NoahAndTheWhale · 29/08/2010 17:16

That is very weird (am a contact lens wearer). If mine aren't in my eyes I can't see.

I have GPs and if I get a hair or whatever behind one of them, yup, I stick it in my gob to get whatever it is off before popping the lens back in.

Flame away Grin

Yeah yeah know all about eye infections etc. But realistically, I am not going to cart around a contact lens case containing saline solution on the off chance I'll get something in my eye. I have never left them on someone's windowsill however.

It's not as if I am pissing on them. Now there's a thought, though, isn't urine sterile . . .?

TheCrackFox · 29/08/2010 17:34

He will end up with a hideous infection and risk damaging his eyesight.

YANBU

severena · 29/08/2010 17:38

ballonslayer, when i wore Gas Perm, (between the ages of 16 and 36) I did that too. Never had an infection.

Switched to monthly disposables a couple of years ago (which you cannot lick!) and despite scrupulous hand washing and care procedure, have had 3 eye infections....
