I am referring to this; www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11061296

and yes, I am totally aware that the police and government are to blame too but we expect governments and to an extent police, to be corrupt.

I am saying this as a RC too. I am fucking shocked at the amount of revolting crap that the church seem to get away with. Covering up paedophiles/abusers, bombers and who knows what else.

Why are they never made accountable?

The Catholic Church sdoes more than "not hand out condoms' as well you know. The Catholic Church teaches that the use of condoms is a mortal sin.

Meanwhile, in the real world......

daftpunk · 25/08/2010 08:40

Exactly, in reality men in Africa will continue to engage in homosexual behaviour and sleep with female prostitutes without protection....we need to purify people's minds...not slip a condom in their pocket.

noddyholder · 25/08/2010 08:42

I like doing god knows what though

daftpunk · 25/08/2010 08:47

lol..shut up you

right...off to Ikea to spend £100 of cushion covers and other stuff I don't need

seeker · 25/08/2010 08:48

"In case anyone on here doesn't realize it, daftpunk is an active supporter of the BNP and openly hoped for greater BNP representation at the last election. If you choose to debate with her, you need to know the sort of person you are debating with."

PrincessFiorimonde · 25/08/2010 09:21

Seeker, I have read and agreed with yor views on many a thread. And I am diametrically opposed to Daftpunk's politics. But to keep bringing up her BNP views on this thread achieves what exactly?

(Sorry, Seeker; you are certainly not the first person to do this.)

PrincessFiorimonde · 25/08/2010 09:32

Mathanxiety, thank you for the list of people you posted earlier this morning.

There are heroes and villains in every group of humanity. As I said previously, I don't personally subscribe to Catholicism any more, but am perfectly well aware that individuals such as Oscar Romero and Maximilian Kolbe are thoroughly deserving of respect (to put it mildly).

"If you think defending my religion is spouting bile it's a good thing you're going to bed, hopefully you'll wake up with some brain cells."

Hahahahahahahaha!!! Grin

Er, yer right.

Your arguments are always so articulate and well-thought through DP, that's how you win so many round to your cause.

Hmm
seeker · 25/08/2010 09:48

Princessflorimund - it's not something I would usually do. But I do believe these are exceptional circumstances. daft punk has views so utterly unacceptable that everyone who engages with her should know about them. It's not as if she once said something unfortunate once which she should be allowed to live down. Her consistent statements are part of a political amd moral mindset which is so repugnant that nobody should be in any doubt about them. And they do become diluted over time by references to IKEA cushions.

abr1de · 25/08/2010 09:48

Events occurring in the Ireland of the seventies, a backward and blinkered society, do not correlate to how the RC church in England is run these days. For obvious historic reasons there is simply not the same blind deference to the church. The RC church in Ireland has a lot to feel ashamed of.

As far as answering the point of what I have done, well, I have been CRB checked for five years so I can help out if needed with children's liturgy. I also gave a large sum of money which will be used inter alia to train priests. I also email the local bishop directly if I hear of things that do not seem right. Because I am a donor I regard myself as a stakeholder and obliged to question. Mostly all I see is kindly priests doing jobs nobody else seems to do, such as visiting elderly and sick people.

sanielle · 25/08/2010 09:53

I think it is realy cute the way daft punk takes sexual health advice from a 70 year old virgin with a history of hiding pedophiles. Bless.

sanielle · 25/08/2010 09:55

"we need to purify people's minds...not slip a condom in their pocket."

Yeah daft that's worked really well so far.

seeker · 25/08/2010 09:55

"I also gave a large sum of money which will be used inter alia to train priests."

Now this (sorry, abride) is something else that really, really, pisses me off. The church expecting the congregations to pay for the training of priests in child protection issues! Why on earth should decent lay Catholics pay for this?

sanielle · 25/08/2010 10:08

curryfreak i try not to hate anybody curry freak, and I certainly don't hate any individual for believing in a higher power or for believing differently to me. Please do not put words in my mouth. I believe people who are a part of the church have a responsibility to change it from within.

I suppose you could say that I hate the "Catholic Church" though as an entity, although I haven't actually said that. I know many other religions are just as intolerant and just as wrong but none have so much money, power or influence.. so I feel there is more to fear from the Catholic Church.

Heracles · 25/08/2010 10:14

"In actual fact Heracles, you are actually mental...[sic?]what's all that about?...sovereign city state...who voted THEM in in then....all you fucking catholics?oooops no,'cos you don't get a choice"

Something tells me you haven't read the thread properly... Confused

"my experience of the Anglian church is that its main purpose is to ensure its survival in its current form rather than questioning if that is actually the best way of serving"

Do you think? I've always felt that the Anglican Church is far more prgressive than the majority of organised faith groups due to its constant reevaluation of what it is, what it believes and the veracity of what it preaches. Don't get me wrong, I still fundamentally disagree with its core USP, but doubt is actively encouraged amongst its adherents and representatives, the polar opposite of RC doctrine.

"The catholic church offers "spiritual & moral" guidance, it's not their job to hand out condoms to half of Africa, (they're not stupid, they know the majority of them wouldn't see the light of day anyway)... "

  1. It's as much their "job" as telling people they're disobeying the word of god by using one.
  1. Oh yes, of course, they'd be fed into that huge condom black market... Hmm

"Exactly, in reality men in Africa will continue to engage in homosexual behaviour and sleep with female prostitutes without protection....we need to purify people's minds...not slip a condom in their pocket."

And for every child that is born with HIV, be sure to pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.

"There are heroes and villains in every group of humanity."

There are indeed, but that's honestly neither here nor there; it's a non-argument, a bluff, a folly.

Citing Mother Theresa as one of the good guys has fair put me off breakfast! I'm off for a brisk walk, I think. Smile

sanielle · 25/08/2010 10:24

Heracles the person in question seems to be very confused and angry with you for making a joke about their caps lock being broken. So they have assumed you are a raging catholic.

edam · 25/08/2010 10:34

It's quite something looking at the desperate twists and turns people will make to try to justify allegiance to an organisation that condoned and enabled thousands of child rapists in every inhabited continent of this world. That protected mass murderers and terrorists while threatening women who had abortions with excommunication - even children who have been the victims of abuse. (That's a recent case in Latin America, not something that was done in the 70s.)

I have every sympathy with ordinary decent Catholics who had no idea what their leaders were up to - must be horrifying to be confronted with the truth. Some of my relatives are Catholics and I am very glad my Grandmother died before all this came out - she would have been enormously distressed. But I have no sympathy at all with people who try to justify the actions of their Church.

When the Pope sets foot in the UK, I do hope someone will be as brave as Peter Tatchell was with Mugabe and attempt to perform a citizen's arrest. The money the taxpayer is being forced to spend on protecting him should instead be spent on investigating the crimes of the church, publishing the truth, prosecuting the criminals and compensating the victims.

sanielle · 25/08/2010 10:39

edam are you think about the 11 year old girl carrying twins by her step dad? Yeah she definitly shouldn't have been allowed an abortion... sigh.

sanielle · 25/08/2010 10:40

My mistake she was 9.

sanielle · 25/08/2010 10:43

From CNN: Child rape isn't so bad apparently.. (but hey we knew that anyway)

Archbishop Don Jose Cardoso Sobrinho of Recife excommunicated the doctor, the child's mother and the medical team involved in the procedure.

However, the stepfather was not excommunicated, with Sobrinho telling Globo TV that, "A graver act than (rape) is abortion, to eliminate an innocent life."

The child was not excommunicated, Sobrinho said, because Catholic Church law says minors are exempt from excommunication.

"The church is benevolent when it comes to minors," he told Globo TV. "As for the adults, especially those who approved it, performed this abortion, the excommunication is applicable."

seeker · 25/08/2010 11:29

And show me the modern hospital for the dying or properly appointed orphanage that the millions donsted to Mother Theresa built and maybe I'll accept that she was one of the good guys.
