to think that ADHD/ADD is a load of nonsense?

Are we really producing ever more kids with these conditions or do parents simply need to take back control and realise that, at times, all kids can be obnoxious, loud, defiant, restless and fidgety and that strictly enforced rules for behaviour, lots of TLC, and the occasional smack on the bum may be the way forward?

well I have got ADHD as has 1 and almost certainly my other son. It pisses me off no end that ignorant people decide for themselves that the condition doesn't exist. Have you decided any other conditions don't exist? Why do you think it's just a condition that affects children? Why do you assume people suffering from ADHD are naughty? I wouldn't describe myself as naughty. But my symptoms make daily life extremely difficult.

My son with the dx is not naughty. He is a wonderful, kind, very clever, witty ball of energetic fun. He has a very high IQ. He is fabulous and is never in trouble at school. But he finds studying extremely difficult, he cannot concentrate and he weeps with frustration at the problems his lack of focus and concentration bring. In subjects like maths or science he gets straight 'A's, in subjects where he has to learn facts, that are boring for him or require him to pay attention he struggles. Just the same for me. He loses things, it costs him me a fortune, he forgets things, he misses deadlines, he finds it hard to judge situations and he cannot sit still, which annoys other people. But he really can't help it.

But of course, his condition doesn't exist. Nor does mine.

Biscuit

The condition is difficult enough to deal with without ignorant judgmental people telling me it doesn't exist. Angry

I think the fact that more children are diagnosed now is because there has been a lot more research and much more is known about these conditions. Years ago these children would just have been labelled as naughty.

At primary school there was a "naughty boy" in my class. One day he threw a table across the room, kicked out the glass panel in the door and jumped out the (thankfully ground floor) window. The teacher responded by removing his shoes and trousers so he'd be too embarrassed to try to escape then when that didn't work she tied him to his chair with a skipping rope. Shock Can you imagine if that happened in a school now?! If only his mother had thought to smack his bum Hmm

tethersend · 22/08/2010 12:25

Breton, how big was the research sample you studied on which your hypothesis is based?

How many children do you know with ADHD?

Breton1900 · 22/08/2010 12:26

Riven: I've provided some information. You have yet to do so.

If you really do have the qualification that you claim, I would have thought your attitude would be rather more mature!

Let's face it anyone can claim to be anything on fora such as these! I'm not saying that you don't hold this qualification, but via this particular system of communication you can't prove that you have, so it is rather pointless to make such a statement. Unless of course, you are resorting to trick number 28.

dd2 has the inattentive type she is extremely bright but very disorganised and always losing things is constantly in trouble as the little darlings shits at school know how to push her buttons and not get caught.
But attitudes like yours exist everywhere including at her school worse luck.

tethersend · 22/08/2010 12:27

It's forums. Not fora.

Gabby, is that you?

Oh and here Biscuit my first one!

Ishouldprobablywax · 22/08/2010 12:32

My dh has ADHD and is not a naughty person at all-never been excluded/arrested. He's wonderful and kind and very successful.
In someways having a mother that was very understanding (she was a psychiatric nurse) has meant he has achieved far more than others without ADHD because he uses his extra energy and can hyper-focus on certain tasks. This has meant within his industry he is as capable and reknowed as men 15 years his senior.

Adhdmum · 22/08/2010 12:33

could you please address the points I have raised?

Why assume this is a condition restricted to children?
Why assume ADHD = naughty? This is certainly not the case in my son's (or e) situation. My ds' teachers at the last parents' evening had absolutely no complaints about his behaviour. Nor have they ever. He is charming and delightful, loving, clever and funny.
What puts you in the position to declare ADHD doesn't exist?
What other conditions would you declare imaginary next?
Should adults with ADHD also receive and occasional smack on their bum?

rainbowinthesky · 22/08/2010 12:34

As a teacher it is obvious when children on medication come to school having not taken their medication that day.

nickschick · 22/08/2010 12:36

Nobody asks for a child to suffer add /adhd..there are no benefits in having a child that can behave so erratically but given support medically and support to the family the children unfortunate enough to have this condition can and often do lead happy fullfilled lives.

I dont have a child with this, my ds has another condition equally as 'unbelievable' its bloody hard work 'pissing in the wind' and fighting for the help your child deserves.

My best friends son has add and autism - its not cute its not attention seeking its bloody hard work.

I only hope that people like the OP never have children with this condition as they are the type of parents to try and bash it out of the child and when A smack on the bottom doesnt(as it cant stop neurological conditions) work, what next? a slap round the head a punch in the eye.....people like the op belong in the last century when anyone 'different' was locked away......come to think of it Breton 1900 can you get a wireless connection in that padded cell?

borderslass · 22/08/2010 12:37

when I last saw ds's paediatrician he told me he firmly believed that these kids DON'T grow out of this condition but it is lifelong they just learn to manage it better with maturity.

borderslass · 22/08/2010 12:40

rainbowinthesky dd2 was sent home from school last year as she had not had her meds [i'd had to go out before she left for school]

Ishouldprobablywax, I could write your exact post too, except my dh did, sort of get booted out of school( just before A levels) though he was allowed to sit his exams and got straight 'A's, and he did sort of get arrested, but left off with a caution after a night on the cells to sober up, but let out early so they didn't have to give him breakfast.

Other than that I could write your post. But he also is a disaster when it comes to losing things, remembering things etc. He is also a very successful adult in a senior position.

hmm wonder who ds gets it from. my doctor told me ADHD tends to run in families, and also people are often without realising it attracted to each other, either as friends or partners. This has turned out to be spot on for me. My 2 best friends have ADHD, I only found out recently, and (some of) their children have also been dx or are under investigation.

Also read links with Aspergers. Do you think that's a made up condition too, OP? Hmm

rainbowinthesky · 22/08/2010 12:41

We have sussed it out at school then either phoned parents or had a phone call from them to confirm it. Sigh, such a conspiracy obviously (not).

Borders thats the thing,my friends son is just learning to control his condition in public (not v succesfully Sad)he is so 'tightly wound' trying to be 'normal' that inevitably it all falls apart.

I quite often take him out and the ignorance I see is horrid I have on occasion had to say to people 'did you want to stare at someone else now, youve been watching him for such a long time it must be boring you'.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 22/08/2010 12:44

why are you worried about the 'sheer number' of diagnoses being made for ADHD? Do you have any evidence that there are huge numbers being diagnosed? I know lots of kids with SN, I don't actually know that many with an ADHD diagnosis.

pushmepullyou · 22/08/2010 12:46

OP you have been asked this question before. Do you actually know ANY people with ADD?
