to think that ADHD/ADD is a load of nonsense?

Are we really producing ever more kids with these conditions or do parents simply need to take back control and realise that, at times, all kids can be obnoxious, loud, defiant, restless and fidgety and that strictly enforced rules for behaviour, lots of TLC, and the occasional smack on the bum may be the way forward?

Starlight, you have the makings of a book, here.

wasuup3000 · 22/08/2010 21:53

NorwegianBlue ADHD is a valid medical diagnosis and to suggest otherwise is being childish and abusive to parents of children who have ADHD. So yes take your disablism and shove it. You are allowed to be obnoxious so I am being obnoxious back. Get over it!

Oh I don't know instead of a book about witch hunters for example, you could write a book about ADHD hunters? Imagine burning the parents of ADHD children at the stake because they are such incompetent parents! OOPs is that not what mumsnet admin is letting certain posters do on here already metaphorically speaking?

NorwegianBlue · 22/08/2010 22:05

wasuup - alcoholism is a valid medical diagnosis, that doesn't mean that we should encourage it.

ouryve · 22/08/2010 22:05

You're onto something there, Starlight. Maybe it is all a government conspiracy. Next thing we know, the school day will be reduced to 90 minutes (including an hour for lunch and two 10 minute breaks) and they'll save a fortune in the process.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 22/08/2010 22:07

I honestly cannot believe some of the crap on here!

wasuup3000 · 22/08/2010 22:08

NorwegiantrollBlue - Can't see anyone encouraging ADHD can you back this comment up with research and facts? For example where is the scientific data that backs up your comment that people are encouraging ADHD?

Wasuup you asked for it -
The Statistics
The statistics associated with ADHD suggests that overdiagnosis is a possibility. Today, the CDC estimates that 4.5 million have been diagnosed with ADHD, and many organizations put the number much higher. The CDC notes that diagnoses of ADHD has increased an average of 3 percent every year from 1997 to 2006. Moreover, the Drug Enforcement Administration notes that since 1991 there has been a 500 percent increase in the prescriptions written for stimulant medication to treat ADHD. The increase in prescriptions for stimulant medication has also caught the attention of former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, who attributes the increase to better diagnoses and treatment of ADHD.

Is this some kind of attention seeking wind-up or are you always this provocative in a totally nasty way?

saintlydamemrsturnip · 22/08/2010 22:13

Why are you quoting american statistics?

why is mn allowing anti sn trolls???
it is getting just plain daft now.

NorwegianBlue · 22/08/2010 22:18

I'm not anti SN, just anti made up excuses.

NorwegianBlue · 22/08/2010 22:19

and by the way MN has no effective means of stopping trolling.

Lougle · 22/08/2010 22:20

NorweiganBlue, I will speak veeerryy slooowllly. If a new drug is on the market, that is a new treatment for a previously untreatable condition, there will be a trend.

Now, children, can anyone tell me what that trend will be?

Well done, StarlightMcKenzie, the trend will be an upwards trend.

Why, though, for an Electric Blue Smartie??

Because the drug didn't exist, or there was no research to show that it helped, and then there was.

What does that mean? Wassup - concentrate

There is a rise of prescriptions for the drug each year.

You don't understand? Perhaps you weren't concentrating.

2shoes · 22/08/2010 22:23

at the very least they could ban the anti sn posters and delete the posts

Tiredmumno1 · 22/08/2010 22:24

Norwegian and op, do you think that a parent suddenly wakes up and walks into a doctors and says, my child behaves badly they must have adhd, and the doc says oh ok you must be right, here have some tablets. Hmm i think not.

bugger off and take your nonsense with you.

and alcoholism is something you do to yourself duh.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 22/08/2010 22:24

Norwegian Blue do fuck off

wasuup3000 · 22/08/2010 22:25

I had actually fallen asleep Lougle due to the Troll

NotEnoughSleep · 22/08/2010 22:25

I just wanted to say that my heart goes out to all those who are coping with a child with genuine ADHD. You are amazing.

I expect there are people out there in the world who apply the ADHD label inappropriately and that this may be a problem in some areas as pointed out by the Psychiatrist lady, but this should not be used to devalue (if that is the right word) those who genuinely do have or are coping with those who have the disorder.

I think most mental disorders are on a continuum just like ASD. So at one end you have those who are perfectly ok, then those for whom you just see the symptoms as personality traits moving onto those for whom it becomes a problem and then a chronic problem. The 'bandwagon jumpers' are probably at the personality end.

OP - you are insulting, and show a lack of empathy which leads me to think you were smacked on the bum too much as a child.

2shoes · 22/08/2010 22:26

don't feed the troll
don't even five them a biscuit

wasuup3000 · 22/08/2010 22:28

Five them?
