to hate car stickers saying 'Baby on Board'

Dorothyredboots · 20/08/2010 16:02

Sorry but they drive me mad. I drive carefully all the time so I'm not going to take special care if there is a baby in the car in front of me. Or are they alerting me to the fact that the person in front of me is likely to drive erractically as they are a parent and therefore have much more important things on their mind than driving safely? Or are they, as I suspect, just a way of saying 'Hey look what I made...'? And don't get me started on the ones that say 'Princess on Board'. They don't even make me laugh.
Anyone else want to put them in Room 101?

Of course they're not used to actively rub the less fertile's nose in it, but they do strike me as being no more useful or relevant to other drivers as those hideous 'show dogs in transit' stickers.

Oh, you've got show dogs. How nice for you. Now, remind me, why should I give a tinker's toss?

BoojaB · 20/08/2010 20:52

:)
If your driving's that poor, blocking part of the window aint going to help matters either!

BusyMissIzzy · 20/08/2010 20:54

Wow, I had no idea people felt so strongly about them. Personally, I bought one cos I thought it looked nice. I certainly didn't expect that anyone would drive any differently because of it; if some twat is going to tailgate me, I dont think a little sign will change their mind. And if I'd realised it might actually be causing offence, I'd have thought twice. I just figured it was another bit of cute-but-a-bit-useless baby shite paraphernalia. Like top and tail bowls, or these (which I don't have btw; I really don't understand paying £10 for that).

edemame · 20/08/2010 21:03

You do realize that if someone is actually taking the time to read your little sign in the back window of your car, they're not focusing on traffic or your tail lights for that moment and therefore you're actually obstructing the driving of others for that time?

Honestly, I don't like them, they're a bit silly looking, so I wont have one in my car, simple as that. But what I dislike the most is the false sense of security some people seem to get by hanging them in their car. If someone drives on your bum, if they speed or drive erratic, they're not going to bother glancing at your sign, they're going to continue on.

It's up to the driver of the car with the child to be cautious and aware that someone could tail end you. That's why the driving instructors tell you to always check your review mirror before you fully break.

susitwoshoes · 20/08/2010 21:06

BusyMissLizzy - why did you think it looked nice? I mean, before you became a mum what did you think when you saw one of these? Am genuinely interested, not being sarcastic.

sterrryerryoh · 20/08/2010 21:09

When I said ?celebrate? my son - I didn?t mean that the rest of the world should celebrate - I meant I was able to go out and buy all the stuff that didn?t really mean anything, because I could and really wanted to. The ?celebration? (perhaps the wrong word) was, for me, in the purchasing of said tat. The act of hanging it in the car window was because that?s what they?re for. It didn?t register on my radar that anyone could be wounded by my actions. I realise no one else cares - I wouldn?t expect them to, and don?t care if they do or not Smile

MrsFogi · 20/08/2010 21:17

yummymummy1208 you disgust me.

Kariba29 · 20/08/2010 21:18

I have one and i dont consider myself 'chavvy' whatever that means, i saw it, wanted it, and bought it. Why would you care, its not hurting anyone, maybe find something else to 'hate'

peeringintothevoid · 20/08/2010 21:35

venusonarockbun · 20/08/2010 21:52

YANBU - They are tasteless and completely irrelevant to the emnergency services.

mumofthreesweeties · 20/08/2010 21:53

YANBU, I saw one today written Brothers to Fred, Ted and Billie WTF. Someone actually ordered one of these especially to put up on their car window

thelunar66 · 20/08/2010 21:55

Wonder if there is a market for 'back off, squashy cakes on board'?

I drive ever so carefully if I have a lovely cake in the back Grin

Fizzywinelover · 20/08/2010 21:56

I knew what you meant by 'celebrate' sterry.

People can flame away, but I think it is nice that a son brings you joy like that. My son also brings me great joy, and it has given me such pleasure to buy him all sorts of doo dabs. Even winnie the poo stuff which was another cause of great upset on MN several weeks back. It does not mean that you are sticking a finger up at the infertile, ffs. Does anyone who has a child want to say 'ner ner' to the infertile? No-one thinks like that, surely. (I hope) It just means happy, grateful.

Fizzywinelover · 20/08/2010 21:58

I want a 'back off squashy cakes on board' sticker too!!!!

Now that would be fab.

thelunar66 · 20/08/2010 22:01

Fizzywinelover... We could market a 'back off, cava/champagne bottles on board' too

I think you and me are on the same wavelength here.... Grin

We don't have them or like them but if you stick them on the window of the door your child's seat is next to it can remind people to try and leave a decent amount of room next to you when parking.

BoojaB · 20/08/2010 22:04

I've seen "Wedding Cake on Board". It wasn't an advert for a cake-making service, just a handmade sign. Yes, I'll drive with much more care and attention around you, as you have a bloody wedding cake. I'd have liked to ram her off the road really!

DinahRod · 20/08/2010 22:06

When digging out baby stuff in the garage Dh found a freebie one and stuck it in the car.

I asked him why and he had no idea! He thought it was mandatory.

He might as well have one stating his sperm are fully mobile Hmm

ratspeaker · 20/08/2010 22:09

FWIW I am infertile! It?s never ever bothered me

thelunar66 · 20/08/2010 22:18

Spacehopper.. now that is another bug-bear of mine... why don't cars have proper spare tyres these days??? My honda has a stupid little skinny emergency thing and my sports car has a bottle of juice and a compressor... what is all that about? Confused

YellowDaffodil · 20/08/2010 22:21

YABU to care what people put in their cars. That said my neighbour has an Everton sticker on his car which make me want to kick him, so I am also unreasonable!

People who have these signs are also unreasonable - why would you want to obscure part of your view when driving around with your children in the car? Very odd imo.
