to hate car stickers saying 'Baby on Board'

Sorry but they drive me mad. I drive carefully all the time so I'm not going to take special care if there is a baby in the car in front of me. Or are they alerting me to the fact that the person in front of me is likely to drive erractically as they are a parent and therefore have much more important things on their mind than driving safely? Or are they, as I suspect, just a way of saying 'Hey look what I made...'? And don't get me started on the ones that say 'Princess on Board'. They don't even make me laugh.
Anyone else want to put them in Room 101?

I just don't understand why some people waste so much energy, getting wound up about the choices other people make which really don't affect them at all. It just seems to be a trivial thing to let spoil your day, or incite you to want to hurl insults at total strangers!? So what if they're naff? I'm personally not a big fan of tattoos, but couldn't care less if somebody else chooses to get one?

Fizzywinelover · 20/08/2010 16:35

I saw a sign once that had 'baby on board'. Next to it was another one that said 'Mother-in-law in boot'.

I did laugh.

I think they are horrid also, but also understood it was to alert emergency services.

sloanypony · 20/08/2010 16:36

I think they are the most ridiculous thing ever invented.

Whatever they may or may not have been invented for in the first place, the vast majority of people put them up as a fertility boast.

Any kind of assumption that others should change their driving or behaviours, however bad, simply because you have sprogged is beyond arrogant.

bamboobutton · 20/08/2010 16:37

they were also told to reccomend people put them in childrens bedroom windows so if a house was on fire they could see which rooms children might be in and head straight there.

racheyh · 20/08/2010 16:39

To work properly if you think they were invented for the car crash scenario you would have to remove them when your baby wasn't in the car and I don't think anyone does that.

So actually they are as useless as a sign saying Possible occupants of the car could include Mum, Dad, Baby, Big Brother, Dog, Grandma, Possibly Grandad if it is a Sunday and there's no match on, sometimes Auntie Sue when her car won't start and occasionally next doors cat if it needs to visit the vets!

Just to back up bamboobutton - pfirst response emergancy servces are trained to look for these.
A family member who is a paramedic was at scene of very bad accident, one unconscious female driver. He noted the 'baby on board' sticker, and the firemen cut into the car. Couldn't see the baby, had to really look for it but found it. Most certainly would have been missed if not for the sign.

BoojaB · 20/08/2010 16:45

So, if people are justifying them by saying they're in case of an emergency, do they take them OUT when there is NO child in the car? Otherwise emergency services would be looking for someone who isn't there?

No? I didn't think so.

They're just for chavs, and that's that! Wink

Tante, he saw a tiny little baby on board sign but not a carseat Hmm

bamboobutton · 20/08/2010 16:46

racheyh- i also asked dad that question and he said they prefered wasting time searching than not bothering and missing them. not an issue these days as car sears and compulsary, and who removes the car seat after every journey, so undergrowth is searched anyway.

i'll believe my dad and his 25 years experience than a rumour mill website.

bamboobutton · 20/08/2010 16:48

if the car is so badly smashed that it needs the jaws of death to cut it open then a car seat can very easily be missed.

I just bought one cos I thought it looked cute. Didn't realise at the time that I was making a decision that would incite such ridicule and judgment Hmm

Megatron · 20/08/2010 16:55

I'm not a particular fan so don't have one but the ones I really can't stand are the 'babe on board' or 'yummy mummy on board' ones. They make me cringe.

herbaceous · 20/08/2010 16:56

If they were introduced for safety reasons, which still seems doubtful, in the days before car seats, surely there's no reason for them now? If a car is so crushed you can't see a car seat, how will the sign remain visible?

bamboobutton · 20/08/2010 16:59

probably because they don't prevent crashes.

they aren't necessary these days as car seats are compulsory so they look for them any way now.

they were useful back when car seats and seatbelts weren't required by law.

"Just for the record I am childless and therefore the 'don't buy one' comments are irrelevant."

Enough Said!!!

Kaloki · 20/08/2010 17:01

Have to say, much as I think people should be free to put these signs up. It does make me pull this face Hmm when I see them. Mainly as most of them aren't the basic "baby on board", most of them are some variation on "princess on board" - which just strikes me as daft. (Admittedly, my previous choice of zebra print car seat covers was probably received the same way)

Plus, the kind of drivers that will tailgate are no less inclined to tailgate if you have the baby on board sign.

If anyone ever buys me any variation on it, it will go in the bin.

bamboobutton · 20/08/2010 17:01

herbaceous- because usually the windows are expelled outwards.

Blimey I didn't realise this was such an emotive subject! Some make me cringe but I don't really care what someone else has in their car and I don't for a second think that the emergency services would search a vehicle any less if there wasn't a sign in a car.
