I am disgusted at a clip that I have just seen on facebook of a mentally ill woman from the town I live in. She is seen in a local estate agents wandering around repeating herself over and over and is obviously filmed by somebody from the estate agents they are all heard laughing at her as well. Whilst I appreciate that it is hard not to smile she is a woman with a mental health condition not a freak or clown from a circus. Why is it ok to laugh at this ill person. You would not walk into a hospital ward and laugh at ill people there.

Good grief! YANBU. Apart from the complete lack of morals this is incredibly unprofessional. Gross misconduct in fact. If this was my business I would want to know so I could sack the cretin that did it.

dustycups · 18/08/2010 23:34

well said! yadnbu!!!!!

LesbianMummy1 · 18/08/2010 23:35

I can't see the funny side at all it will now ensure anybody I know who asks about estate agents I will advise them to give this one a wide berth

Shock

Is this for real? (Don't link it Sad)

LesbianMummy1 · 18/08/2010 23:38

dustycups · 18/08/2010 23:40

it is real, i have watched it and disgussed it with LM1. its disgusts me how funny the staff find it!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 18/08/2010 23:40

Wondering if something like trading standards or CAB could advise you. It really seems like there should be some way of ensuring there are sanctions against the business, if their staff are actually getting away with humiliating people like this during business hours and on business premises.

Poor woman.

LesbianMummy1 · 18/08/2010 23:41

good thinking about trading standards would you go there first or give estate agents chance to rectify it first?

OP posts:
abbierhodes · 18/08/2010 23:54

Report them. Hope someone gets sacked.

Marjee · 19/08/2010 00:05

[anger] thats disgusting! LM1 you have to do something, you can't let them get away with it! Is there any way of getting in contact with the owner/manager? I'm sure they'd be very interested to know what their staff get up to at work!

DorotheaPlenticlew · 19/08/2010 00:07

I would vote you go to a neutral body first to try and reduce chances of it just being swept under the carpet by excessively tolerant managers (as could happen if you just complain to the company). For all you know the manager could have been there when it happened. Best to try reporting to someone official and see where you get.

ChippingIn · 19/08/2010 00:07

LM are you in Berkshire??

Marjee · 19/08/2010 00:08

Emoticon didn't work, that should be Angry obviously Blush. I would consider contacting the local paper as well, publicly shame the fuckers, it seems fair.

TheYearOfTheCat · 19/08/2010 00:12

Report it to the Equality Commission.

AFAIK mental illness would be covered by the Disability Discrimination Act, which extends to the provision of goods and services.

It would be unacceptable to be falling around laughing at someone in a wheelchair, or with some other obvious physical disability. There is no difference in the way they are treating a member of the public with a mental illness.

TheYearOfTheCat · 19/08/2010 00:15

It is also a breach of the Data Protection Act, so you could contact the Information Commissioner to complain.

The Estate Agent will undoubtedly be classed as a data controller, and visual images / sound recordings of a customer would be classed as data.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 19/08/2010 00:21

Yay, TYOTC. I love how there are always people who really know what to do on here :)

LM1, if you make any headway I'd love to hear how you get on, do let us know. Fascinating to learn how this will be dealt with.

StudiousSal · 19/08/2010 05:56

If I was in your position I would report it to the local authorities, either the police or the social services under safeguarding of vulnerable adults, hope they get the book thrown at them!

People like these make me sick Angry

FellatioNelson · 19/08/2010 06:19

What a disgraceful heartless thing to do.Shock

Numberfour · 19/08/2010 07:12

Bloody disgraceful. I second what StudiousSal says. Report it and take it further than just the twat's employer (not that SS used those words!)

LesbianMummy1 · 19/08/2010 07:50

thanks no I not in Berkshire I am in Hampshire I am not sure who to go to now maybe police or social services as I imagine it will be dealt with quicker than anywhere else. I was in two minds whether to go into estate agents but I could also imagine that ending up on youtube titled ANGRY CUSTOMER KICKS OFF or something like that

OP posts:
sloanypony · 19/08/2010 08:03

Its only a breach of the data protection act if she is a customer - if she's just wandered in off the street then it is not.

Disgraceful.

AgentProvocateur · 19/08/2010 08:12

I'm not sure that DDA would apply either. If the estate agent is a chain, I'd report to their head office or regulating body. I think I might actually pop into the local police station too and ask for advice.

It's disgraceful, and makes me sad and angry to think of vulnerable people being exploited like this.

StudiousSal · 19/08/2010 08:24

Please go to the police as I said they have to do something, thats what brought about the safeguarding act, everyone should report disgraceful acts like this, they won't be laughing when the police turn up on their doorstep.

StudiousSal · 19/08/2010 08:27

BTW it doesn't matter if you go to the police or SS as they all work together on issues like this, although it will be the local authority who will take the lead, unless the police want to prosecute.

sanielle · 19/08/2010 08:28

Dont tell the estate agents unless the police or CAB can't help you. DOn't give them a chance to clean up their mess.. Since posting the video was hardly an accident. Bastards.
