Edam, when i started work i apsired to £50k, that was my dream and it bought you a lot.
Now three times £50k salary would allow you a mortgage for a 2 bedroom property in a safe area in the north west, god knows what it's like down south.
But I can assure you we pay the bills and nothing else on that sort of money, I will have to work too if we want any sort of holidays and to actually pay the mortgage off rather than be interest only. And we live in a very ordinary semi.

spiritmum · 18/08/2010 22:06

Has anyone yet linked to the Stephanomics blog on the BBC that shows that women and children are bearing the brunt of the cuts whilst pensioners have their benefits ring-fenced or raised? Don't want to do it if it's already been done.

tethersend · 18/08/2010 22:09

BA's just trying to get my attention because WE ARE IN LOVE .

toccatanfudge · 18/08/2010 22:11

well I'm only 1hr from London on the train - and you can buy a 3 bedroom house for less than £150k -

I am a higher rate tax payer and won't need cb to get by if/when the twins I'm carrying are born. But I have every intention of claiming it.

montmartre · 18/08/2010 22:14

axisofevil- why?
you don't think the country is in enough of a mess already? yes... it's only £30.00 a week... but if everyone thinks like you do, then all those £30.00 add up Hmm

mamatomany · 18/08/2010 22:16

Why shouldn't she claim ?

fedupofnamechanging · 18/08/2010 22:19

Another one here who on paper, should be okay financially. However, I've had to declare the car off road as I can't afford to tax/insure it. Can't afford holidays or even days out if they cost anything. I'm not blowing all the money on handbags and shoes, I'm literally paying the bills. It costs a lot of money to feed and clothe 4 DC. And, yes, I could afford them when I had them. These days even a good wage doesn't go as far as it used to.

Family Allowance was renamed Child Benefit, because once something is thought to be a 'benefit' it is easier for the govt to get rid of it.

It seems to me that middle earners are keeping their families and the country afloat, but are squeezed from all directions and get fuck all in return for their efforts. The very rich have clever accountants and the very poor have a certain amount of protection from the state, but the people in the middle work hard, pay shitloads of tax and then get any help taken away.

montmartre · 18/08/2010 22:20

Because she doesn't need it- she said so. Why would anyone claim benefits if they don't need them? They are a SAFETY NET.

toccatanfudge · 18/08/2010 22:24

because CB is a universal benefit that is paid to anyone that has children regardless of income...........DC probably claims them and spends it on beer..........

mamatomany · 18/08/2010 22:27

So it's a benefit now, you see on here for years people have been harping on about how tax credits and cb aren't benefits they are a right, but now suddenly we need to cut back a bit they are benefits and those who can afford to should give them up for the greater good, sour grapes me thinks.
I also wouldn't mind betting that those who don't need them as such put the money to better use, either supporting local small business' ie cafes, swimming classes for the children or saving them for the DC's future.
I don't, it pays our bills.

toccatanfudge · 18/08/2010 22:28

and they were originally an "allowance" - not one of the "safety net" benefits

toccatanfudge · 18/08/2010 22:33

you see that's the thing

the DWP handles all the "safety net" benefits - it's entire budget is used for pensions, IS, JSA, ESA, DLA, Housing benefit, council tax benefit.

The HRMC is an enitrely different budget and adminsters the TC's and CB.......which are NOT included when they talk about the £135bn benefits bill.......(of which almost half is pensions).......

montmartre · 18/08/2010 22:36

Whyever is it sour grapes mamatomany?
I am not talking about tax credits- if you are eligible for tax credits, then you probably need them!
The point is that CB is not means tested, so people who do not need it should not claim it. If you are comfortable without it how could one morally beggar the country further by claiming it?

Toc- I doubt v much DC claims it (or Sam for that matter, as it is the mother who claims in most cases).

expatinscotland · 18/08/2010 22:57

'DC probably claims them and spends it on beer..........'

He doesn't strike me as a person who drinks beer, or at all, tbh. Coke, more likely, but not booze. What's a wrap go for these days?

Housewife2010 · 18/08/2010 22:57

I don't mind them means testing it as long as it is at a high enough level that it will never affect us. We're already going to be losing our working family tax credits next year. I need some pocket money to help fund my Boden/Ocado/M&S food essentials.

southeastastra · 18/08/2010 23:00

i'd like to think that people will get really angry if they're cut for middle and lower earners.

another poll tax riot maybe - bloody tories

BarmyArmy · 18/08/2010 23:10

tethersend - hush now Smile

Ladies (for it is the case that I am a gent, after a fashion), I will plead guilty to being a little bit provocative in my last contributions, if only to wake things up a bit.

Nevertheless, my view is that CB is a bad idea. The State should not be paying for our own individual choices in this way - we might as well claim "car benefits" because we want to have cars...I can see it now, "It's my riiiigght!".

People should assess what they can afford and live accordingly. Govt finds are sparce enough without subsidising children.

Not least because the unintended consequence of CB is to encourage people (the very people who contribute f*ck all) to have children.

southeastastra · 18/08/2010 23:12

if they get rid i hope they adjust the tax i have to pay accordingly fuckers

BarmyArmy · 18/08/2010 23:12

AxisOfEvil is precisely the sort of person who should not be eligible (like me). A starting point is to withdraw CB from the middle-classes...then limit it to 1 child per family, then withdraw it altogether.

BarmyArmy · 18/08/2010 23:16

Ladies (middle-class ones, I mean), think about it - CB involves the Govt taking £30 off you per week in tax...spending £10 on bureaucracy and then giving you £20 back...and you think it's a benefit???

Far better for them to take £5 off you and pay CB to those that really need it. You'd be £5 a week better off as a result.

bumpsoon · 18/08/2010 23:16

Just to point something out to those of the baby boomer bashing mentality , they have subsidised themselves if they ,like my parents ,worked full-time for 40 odd years or does paying tax and national insurance not count for anything ? Better to pick on pensioners than the goverment eh Sad

southeastastra · 18/08/2010 23:17

so many of the cuts mean women and children will suffer, surely something else could be cut first

and on a parenting website depressing to see others agreeing with it.

southeastastra · 18/08/2010 23:17

and barmy you're a bloke aren't you?
