To be a bit shocked by 'The Inbetweeners'

I watched a couple of episodes of this yesterday and was really quite shocked at some of the sexist derogatory language used on the show:

'There's some tidy minge here...' (Talking about a group of girls)

'If there's grass on the lawn you can plant your pole'. (Talking about the fact that the said girls were 12/13)

A character being routinely referred to as 'Charlotte big tits'.

'Does it smell?...has she wiped her minge on it.' (Talking about a Valentines Day card from a girl)

'I think we could get our fingers sticky here.' (talking about the fact that there were plenty of girls in a disco scene)

Plus numerous other references to tits, fanny, minge, wannk, cock, cum, blow etc.

Now, I realise that this programme is meant to be watched ironically by young men aged 25-35, but isn't the problem that it is being watched 'literally' by teenagers and children aged 13 - 18?

What kind of attitudes towards girls/women is this promoting in young men?

Oh, and yes, it is wittily scripted, but it also gave me the creepy horrors at the general sexualised nastiness of it all...

I've always wondered what teenage boys did think of it. Do they mind being having the piss mercilessly taken out of them? It's pretty brutal.

I think it's hilarious but I'm ancient.

mippy · 02/09/2010 15:27

They seem a lot more childish than when I was in sixth-form - more like fourth-years (I was 18 ten years ago though and went ot college, not school sixth-form). But then, obviously I didn't see boys on their own. We never had trouble getting served or buying alcohol so all that stuff is a bit lost on me.

We're laughing at them, not with, with the crude language. I did hear boys say things like this when I went to pubs.

Simon "But I've fancied Carly since we were 8"

Jay: "What? You fancied an 8 year old. Paedo"

Simon: "No, because I was 8 too."

Jay: "Doesnt matter- you're still a paedo"

If anyone could ever watch this show literally, then this show is not going to make them any worse or stupider. And in no way does it show acting like this is beneficial.
The show is actively making fun of and showing negative affects from these worse qualities of today's youth. So in my books, it is likely a positive influence.

Glitterkitten24 · 11/07/2013 15:25

I get what you mean, but as pps have said its only really one character who uses that language and he is portrayed as a complete failure with the girls.

The fish punch episode is hilarious...I was 3 days post EMCS when I watched my first ever episode, and laughed so hard I was jiggling my scar but just couldn't stop belly laughing.
Closely followed by the 'squirrel mugging off J' episode.

No idea why this thread has been resurrected from 2010, but thanks anyway. I have just had a good laugh reading all the comments and am getting the box set back out for another watch tonight.

Love it!

BombayBadonkadonks · 11/07/2013 16:06

ZOMBIE THREAD!

Love the program though!

CrapBag · 11/07/2013 16:45

I love this programme. YABU. If it bothers you then don't watch it. Ultimately its a group of 17/18 year old boys. I imagine more than a couple of them talk like this. Certainly what I remember them being like when I was at school.

'friends'

'fucking friends'

is something me and my 'friend' often say to each other. Grin

Love it in the film when Jay asks the girl outside the bar if she is "on the blob" because she doesn't want him. Grin

CrapBag · 11/07/2013 16:45

Whoops, didn't see the date!

TabithaStephens · 11/07/2013 16:56

I love the Inbetweeners, didn't like the film though.

Here's a video of (NWS, of course)

It's not something I would have wanted to watch with my parents. Or with my kids when they are old enough.

Nancyclancy · 11/07/2013 17:02

I love the inbetweeners!!! Yes it's rude but that's most teenage boys for you. Each character is completely different and Jay is the only really crude one.

Tittypulumpcious · 11/07/2013 17:03

You missed out clunge.. Grin

Fairylea · 11/07/2013 17:11

I love it. My mum loves it (she is 65). Everyone I know loves it. It's not aimed at any group in particular.

I think you're taking it way too seriously. It is intended to make you laugh at the stupidity of teenagers.

Buddhagirl · 11/07/2013 17:30

Feed the donkey. Yabu

TheCraicDealer · 11/07/2013 17:40

When the first series started I'd just left school- couldn't believe how well observed and close to real life it was. Hilarious.

burberryqueen · 11/07/2013 17:44

friendddd! car frienddd!

funkybuddah · 11/07/2013 17:52

The one with the most to say about Clunge etc is Jay but when he gets a girlfriend he's very different, plus his dad is an arsehole.

But more importantly I didn't know there was a new series, same cast? I'm very excited.

ipswichwitch · 11/07/2013 17:53

Wee cum tit village

You have no idea the restraint I have to use to stop myself defacing signs like this!!!

ipswichwitch · 11/07/2013 17:53

(Or even flower beds!)

funkybuddah · 11/07/2013 17:53

Just seen that it's a zombie thread, now I'm sad.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/07/2013 18:07

As somebody else has said - you're meant to be laughing at the boys. They are the punchline of the entire show.

Yabu if you don't get that.

JerseySpud · 11/07/2013 18:08

Friend....football friend!

I think the inbetweeners should be compulsory viewing for every teenage girl! It's a real insight...
