To be a bit shocked by 'The Inbetweeners'

I watched a couple of episodes of this yesterday and was really quite shocked at some of the sexist derogatory language used on the show:

'There's some tidy minge here...' (Talking about a group of girls)

'If there's grass on the lawn you can plant your pole'. (Talking about the fact that the said girls were 12/13)

A character being routinely referred to as 'Charlotte big tits'.

'Does it smell?...has she wiped her minge on it.' (Talking about a Valentines Day card from a girl)

'I think we could get our fingers sticky here.' (talking about the fact that there were plenty of girls in a disco scene)

Plus numerous other references to tits, fanny, minge, wannk, cock, cum, blow etc.

Now, I realise that this programme is meant to be watched ironically by young men aged 25-35, but isn't the problem that it is being watched 'literally' by teenagers and children aged 13 - 18?

What kind of attitudes towards girls/women is this promoting in young men?

Oh, and yes, it is wittily scripted, but it also gave me the creepy horrors at the general sexualised nastiness of it all...

I think it is one of the most hilarious programmes I have seen in ages. I can't wait for Season 3.

As for it being too rude, it is for adults, and is on late enough for anyone too young to watch it, to be in bed/out of the room.

It is fairly typical of how 16/17/18 year old boys speak, IMO. I have a beautiful, innocent 4 year old DS, who's ears are shielded, by me, from anything remotely rude/aggessive/profane. However I fully accept that by the age of about 15, he will be lying bragging about being 'up to his nuts in guts', to all his mucky little friends.

Most of our DH/DP's probably spoke like that at one stage, but we'd balk at them saying it now.

It's kids isn't it? It's just mildly exaggerated for this particular TV show.

Cuppatea - Bus Wankers was absolutely hysterical!! Grin

katkouta · 11/08/2010 15:54

YummyorSlummy It starts in September I think. Its being filmed now! Cant wait. (sorry for hijack)

JaneS · 11/08/2010 15:55

I knew a couple of the people involved in this show a few years back, and they said things like this in a kind of ironic/mocking way. Sometimes it was quite funny but one guy in their group of friends just used the 'humour' as a get-out for being a slimy character.

coraltoes · 11/08/2010 15:57

it is one of the funnier things that has been on telly in last few years. It is such a good portrayal of boys, yes one is very rude, but another is a geek, one is so shy around girls you want to hug him, and one is the best dim actor since Trigger off Only Fools!

Can't wait for it to come back!

BranchingOut · 11/08/2010 15:58

So do people feel that the derogatory language doesn't matter because of the general hilarity of the programme?

However, the derogatory language and ideas are still being given lots of 'air time'....

AIBUthough · 11/08/2010 16:01

Branching Out, are you saying that there's no context in which derogatory language can be humorous?

Nemofish · 11/08/2010 16:02

I think the point is that the seemingly confident boys, who are constantly going on about wanting to get their fingers sticky, are in fact so 'orrible and immature that most decent fit girls just aren't interested.

And the sensitive, intelligent lad isn't attractive to girls either, as he lacks confidence.

And you have to love the use of the word 'clunge.'

hophophippidtyhop · 11/08/2010 17:35

DP was in a queue behind a bus the other day and someone had written 'Bus Wankers' in the dirt on the back of it!!

Giddyup · 11/08/2010 18:06

I love the show, its mucky and rude and a bit nasty too and YABU its our job to monitor younger children's viewing habits and raise older ones so as not to be influenced by puerile comedy shows.

veyron · 11/08/2010 18:19

'DP was in a queue behind a bus the other day and someone had written 'Bus Wankers' in the dirt on the back of it!!'

That is brilliant!

I love this programme! I have both series on DVD absolutely hysterical.

*They are also about to start making an 'Inbetweeners' film! Grin

BUMDERS!

cumbria81 · 11/08/2010 18:24

I think it's hilarious. And I am very prim and proper.

sallyseton · 11/08/2010 18:40

It's IRONIC!! The WHOLE POINT is to take the piss out of how gross, pathetic and sex-obsessed (some) teenage boys are! This is why it's called a comedy as opposed to a documentary

Sorry for the capitals and the sarcasm but ffs

sallyseton · 11/08/2010 18:46

Would be far, far more concerned about teenagers watching goodfellas or reservoir dogs tbh

It's not like any of the inbetweeners' main characters ever get anywhere near actually having sex, is it? Which is why it's even funnier.

If there's any teenage boy taking sex or behaviour tips from the inbetweeners he needs his head looked at!

Most of the grossest quotes come from one boy, and he is roundly looked on in disgust by even his peers!

Have you, perchance, watched just the one episode? Rather half heartedly?

sallyseton · 11/08/2010 18:48

And I think even teenagers aged 13-18 can grasp the concept of irony.

Tootlesmummy · 11/08/2010 18:51

I think it is a great program and yes it is very much adult humour but delivered in a childish way if that makes sense.

I love it!

ruddynorah · 11/08/2010 18:54

OP i think you should settle down and watch every episode on 4od, then come back and tell us what you think.

it's hilarious! you are supposed to laugh at how immature, awkward and sad those lads are.

PandaEis · 11/08/2010 19:17

i LOVE the inbetweenersGrin it isnt meant to be a literal description of how boys view girls...its an exaggeration and a freaking funny one at thatGrin

alot of teenage boys have dramas like these especially the slightly socially awkward onesGrin

my fave episode is the second or third one in the first series where simon wants to go out with the girl hes got a crush on, gets pissed and vomits all over the girl and her brotherGrin its hilarious!!

Acekicker · 11/08/2010 19:18

It's not like Grange Hill used to be in that it's going out on CBBC at 5pm on a school night. I kind of assumed when we stumbled across it on 4OD that given it airs late evenings it's aimed pretty much entirely at people who are too old to be out in the pub at that time. Also although my teenage years are a long way behind me, I can't see it giving any stray older teens watching any ideas and vocabulary they haven't already got!

Another one who can't wait for the next series!

BranchingOut · 11/08/2010 19:21

Of course I understand that it is ironic - I am not daft! I also enjoyed the humour...but was also very uncomfortable on another level.

OP, have you heard what teenage boys actually say when they think nobody's listening? It makes The Inbetweeners sound like Shakespeare Grin

ruddynorah · 11/08/2010 19:46

the headteacher is great!

i loved the one where the lads went to the pub to find er, clunge.. and had to buy a carvery each and sit with some random bloke to get served. hahahahahahah!!! oh, and then it turned out to be the wrong pub... Grin

BosomForAPillow · 11/08/2010 19:47

Thank you veyron - I was trying to remember the BUMDERS word (that's my favourite episode) but kept thinking of BEND...something. That would have been bugging me all night.

Love Inbetweeners and YABU.

FunnyLittleFrog · 11/08/2010 19:58

That carvery episode was fantastic, will have to go back to watch again!

Only one of the boys uses derogatory words like 'clunge' and it is made clear time and time again that he is a complete loser with girls. He is also very physically and emotionally immature. When he uses the derogatory langauge it is to impress the lads but the others often roll their eyes; it's something stupid he does and that he will learn is not appropriate. The humour comes from that fact that he is getting it all so wrong, time and time again. And in the episode where he meets a girl he likes and actually speaks to her he is revealed as a soppy romantic.

So YABU.
