To be a bit shocked by 'The Inbetweeners'

I watched a couple of episodes of this yesterday and was really quite shocked at some of the sexist derogatory language used on the show:

'There's some tidy minge here...' (Talking about a group of girls)

'If there's grass on the lawn you can plant your pole'. (Talking about the fact that the said girls were 12/13)

A character being routinely referred to as 'Charlotte big tits'.

'Does it smell?...has she wiped her minge on it.' (Talking about a Valentines Day card from a girl)

'I think we could get our fingers sticky here.' (talking about the fact that there were plenty of girls in a disco scene)

Plus numerous other references to tits, fanny, minge, wannk, cock, cum, blow etc.

Now, I realise that this programme is meant to be watched ironically by young men aged 25-35, but isn't the problem that it is being watched 'literally' by teenagers and children aged 13 - 18?

What kind of attitudes towards girls/women is this promoting in young men?

Oh, and yes, it is wittily scripted, but it also gave me the creepy horrors at the general sexualised nastiness of it all...

OMG!!! its mary whitehouse back from the dead

Its FUNNY FFS

and it's what teenage boys are like

susiedaisy · 11/08/2010 20:26

yes i love this show but some of the language does make me cringe, but it is only one main character that uses it , and as someone else pointed out the boys usually come off worse, with the girls getting the upper hand on them.

QuizteamBleakley · 11/08/2010 20:53

Will and Jay arguing about Caravan Holidays....

Jay - "It's a sense of openness you don't get with other holidays"

Will - "It's a sense of shitting in a bucket in a cupboard you don't get with other holidays....in England....with your parents!"

I love this show because instead of all the twee (aw deep down we're best mates) crap perpetuated by telly and movie producers. It shows teenage boys fors the smelly, arsey, horrible to eachother-cause it's funny, little shits they are (apologies to the mothers of teen boys.. but you remeber what they were like).

Even though they are all friends they abuse eachother with such joy. Thats what I remeber. And yes, the girls always have the upper hand even over the "smart" one. It is a brilliant, witty show. fucking love it. ANd the one who is always on about clunge.. never gets any. That's why it's funny

Yes, it's excrutiatingly embarrassing to watch. But also bloody brilliant. The bus wankers scene is possibly one of the funniest in tv history.

I love it. It shows you how crap teenage boys are.

I'm afraid I have shouted "bus wanker" at DS when he has been waiting at a bus stop with friends. Couldn't help myself.

ruddynorah · 11/08/2010 22:09

sooo many to choose from

Grin Grin

BertieBotts · 12/08/2010 00:48

The comments are about teenage girls because the characters are teenagers though - it would be odd if the only women they fancied were in their 20s!

I don't particularly like the comments but a, I heard worse when I was AT school, and b, I agree with others who say that the comments are in character and the character does not come across well - the overall impression of the programme is not that sexist, IMO, considering the slant of it.

Superfly · 12/08/2010 09:07

YABU

Yes - the language sometimes make me go Shock but it is hilarious. It is the funniest thing I have seen on TV in years. It makes my stomach hurt from laughing.

Having a teenage boy myself, and having been a teenage girl myself many years ago I can totally see where the humour of this series is directed at. It is not going to encourage 13-18 year olds to behave in the way of the characters in the series - because the majority of 13-18 year olds ALREADY DO.

You have a choice - if you know the content and object to it don't watch it. It speaks volumes though that the first series apparently attracted no viewer complaints at all (even though the producers expected it).

QuizteamBleakley · 01/09/2010 20:16

New series starts 13th September on E4 Finding Mr Gilbert a bit hot - AIBU?!

CatIsSleepy · 01/09/2010 20:19

it's the funniest thing on TV at the moment, I love it

yes it is very rude. It is about teenage boys obsessed with sex, whaddaya expect?

CatIsSleepy · 01/09/2010 20:21

Grin @ scurryfunge I'm afraid I have shouted "bus wanker" at DS when he has been waiting at a bus stop with friends. Couldn't help myself.'
