to leave ds1's soaking wet shoes in the hall so they are still wet in the morning?

It was pissing it down here today. Ds1 likes to go out and get soaked, deliberately get himself wet and play in the rain. He has wellies etc but chooses to go out in his trainers. This annoys me and when he does it I have told him he must put paper in his shoes and put them in the airing cupboard, otherwise they are still wet in the morning and he can't wear them . He got athlete's foot before from wearing wet shoes the next day Hmm

He doesn't have spare shoes and doesn't like wearing his wellies so he won't be happy in the morning when he finds his shoes are still soaking. He's left them in the hall (also his raincoat is there lying on the floor soaking wet, so if it's raining tomorrow that will be uncomfortable to wear also).

He's 7 and he's just gone to bed. Should I pick them up or leave them?

At 7, I would leave them I think

Consequences and all that

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/08/2010 19:49

He's a child. Pick them up and dry them off, let him learn this lesson when he's older, wet shoes are horrid!

BAFE · 10/08/2010 19:49

He's 7. Pick them up and put them somewhere to dry for him. Honestly, 7 year old boys don't think about practical things like this, that's what they've got mums for. Grin

ChasingSquirrels · 10/08/2010 19:50

thought you were going to say he was 17 or something.
I would sort them out.
Didn't you see them before he went to bed?

dinkystinky · 10/08/2010 19:50

I'd pick them up, put them in the airing cupboard and not tell him where they are - the fun and games he'll have trying to find them should teach him a lesson or two...

winnybella · 10/08/2010 19:50

I would leave them.

Toclearmyhead · 10/08/2010 19:50

12 year old boys don't think about things like that :o

Dry them for him and have a little grumble in the morning!

ChippingIn · 10/08/2010 19:51

Hmm - how long ago was it that you last told him he needed to do this?

I would just do it tbh, but when he looks for them in the morning make him look for them, don't tell him where they are :)

Chil1234 · 10/08/2010 19:51

I'd leave them wet and make him wear the perfectly good wellies tomorrow that he 'doesn't like'. :) Kill two birds with one rock etc.

PueriSimilisCanis · 10/08/2010 19:53

why can you not say no wellies no go out

FranSanDisco · 10/08/2010 19:55

I'd pick them up though I'd be fuming with him Blush. I had to 'blow dry' 7 yo ds's trainers this morning so he could wear them to football as he'd had a water fight with his pals last night. He seemed to think I could magic them dry Hmm. They stink to high heaven now but he has to wear them Grin.

usualsuspect · 10/08/2010 19:55

I would dry them ..but then I'm a soft touch

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 10/08/2010 19:55

I would dry them
He'll get sore feet otherwise

And in future, I wouldn't let him out in the rain in his shoes
Wellies on - or stay in

Could you stretch to a pair of school type plimsolls for playing out in?

CoupleofKooks · 10/08/2010 19:58

interesting
i was aware he was a child but thank you for the reminder Wink
i think i last told him about 3 weeks ago
usually when he comes in with soaking wet shoes i remind him, but this time i was making dinner and dealing with ds2 and i left him to sort himself out
i have told him several times in the past that if he chooses to go out and get his shoes soaking, that when he comes in, HE needs to put them in the airing cupboard or they will still be wet the next day
i haven't yet left him to find out what happens if he forgets

OP posts:
CoupleofKooks · 10/08/2010 19:59

morecrack i wouldn't mind buying plimsolls but he wouldn't put them on unless i reminded him
he likes getting himself wet and will deliberately take his raincoat off to get wetter

OP posts:
CoupleofKooks · 10/08/2010 20:01

oh and just to clarify - i won't let him wear the wet shoes tomorrow - he'll have to wear wellies - which he dislikes
imo it's his choice to either put his shoes where they will be dry in the morning, or wear wellies

Dh (32) still does things like this.

FranSanDisco · 10/08/2010 20:03

Hide the shoes and leave the wellies out Smile

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 10/08/2010 20:04

I kind of think 7yos do need reminding about lots of things
Wellies on
Teeth brushed
Hands washed
Etc etc

Dd is 9 and still chooses ridiculously inappropriate footwear
Just tell him- wellies on or you're staying in

PueriSimilisCanis · 10/08/2010 20:04

ah Fran has the answer

so dry the shoes in the airing cupboard and 'forget' to get them out in the morning

sorted

notnowbernard · 10/08/2010 20:05

Deffo leave them, he's had more than enough reminders!

How else will he learn?

You lot with boys, I don't know...

Wink
booyhoo · 10/08/2010 20:06

I'd leave them.

ds is 5 and if he did this i would still leave them. you have told them he needs to dry them out and he hasn't done it. he will remember next time.

CoupleofKooks · 10/08/2010 20:06

i'm not big on supervision in this kind of situation, so i don't always know he is outside with trainers on getting soaked
he'll be outside, it'll start raining, i am inside not having noticed, he doesn't come inside as you might expect a person to = wet trainers
today we were walking home from town so we were already a bit wet
when we got in i took a tired sad ds2 in and ds1 just wandered off
by the time dinner was ready he was soaked - i hadn't really registered he was outside standing in puddles

CoupleofKooks · 10/08/2010 20:07

"dry the shoes in the airing cupboard and 'forget' to get them out in the morning"
i don't get this
how will it help? he will have dry shoes in the morning then and will have learnt that if he leaves them on the mat, i pick them up?

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/08/2010 20:08

I would dry them, he is only 7.
