to think this is not 'excessive'

I''m 16 weeks pg, and I'm overweight. I've managed to not put anything on so far, and had an appointment with the midwife today, she'd asked me to keep a food diary for a few days so we could go through it together and figure out if there were any improvements that I could make.
very good of her and helpful I thought, esp as it's not possible to get a dietician app for months.
she didn't find fault with anything, except each morning I have two slices of toast for breakfast with a cuppa, normally with peanut butter, sometimes with marmalade. she said this was 'excessive for breakfast'
really?
is my view of eating so skewed that 2 slices of toast is excessive and I've never known?

taht is disgustingly indulgent, for my breakfast I normally take a few deep breaths and lick a stamp

psst, yanbu she is a harridan

fedupofnamechanging · 07/08/2010 22:54

2 slices of toast is a perfectly normal breakfast imo. Sounds like she couldn't find anything wrong with what you are eating, but felt she had to say something

cantseeforlookin · 07/08/2010 22:56

Most widwives are usually overweight, unhealthy, judgemental, sanctimonious chocaholics. Sorry to all the nice midwives out there but can only speak from experience. They also poke your belly too much and wake your sleeping foetus (s) when you've just managed to stop em kicking and get some shut eye! Peanut butter is a good blood suger stabiliser, low GL or GI or whatever. Protein and good fats.

cornsilk1010 · 07/08/2010 22:57

Sorry but toast and peanut butter is fattening. Why not try cereal instead?

CheeryCherry · 07/08/2010 22:57

Rediculous! Please don't let the foodie issues take over your life - unless theres serious medical problems involved, just do everything in moderation. And remind yourself to enjoy your pregnancy - it really is a very special time in your life. Enjoy your toast in the morning! Smile

Firawla · 07/08/2010 22:57

its not excessive! if you were doing something like slimming world you can eat 2 toasts for brekfast if you want, and that is a diet...
breakfast is the most important meal of the day anyway so why starve @ breakfast. also it will help the morning sickness?
maybe she meant the peanut butter but really she sounds extremely bossy

By two slices did you mean two loaves ;-)

Yanbu of course!

BonniePrinceBilly · 07/08/2010 22:59

It is not "fattening". What does that even mean?

TheCrackFox · 07/08/2010 23:00

If I were you I would "forget" to do a food diary unless she has arranged for a qualified dietician to help you.

LostArt · 07/08/2010 23:00

She'd have a field day with me. Grin
I don't think your breakfast is excessive at all. Agree that she probably feels that she needs to say something.
Next time you see her, tell her that you have cut down to one and a half slices.

cornsilk1010 · 07/08/2010 23:01

It means it is high in calories - which it is.

cantseeforlookin · 07/08/2010 23:01

I think the bag of cadbury clusters I am munching my wway through could be fattening! They are very addictive!

Peanut butter is good. Toast is good if it's not el cheapo soft white. It's a perfectly normal, decent breakfast. Don't dieticians tell people to eat more at breakfast than at other meals now? Tell her to stick it in her ear.

RobynLou · 07/08/2010 23:05

I do know peanut butter is high in fats, but good fats I thought, that are good for growing a baby? and I have the wholenut stuff that's not got sugar etc in...
and yes marmalade is high in sugar, but its the only sugar I have...
I'm not a fan of cereal - its SO expensive!

glad most seem to think I'm not being ott with my breakfast, she really threw me, I thought I'd missed out on a memo that said one slice of toast is the maximum! She said there were two holes in a toaster for a reason - so that a couple could make both their breakfasts together - one slice each...

wholemeal bread contains nearly the same calories as white bread, although it will be healthier
why not explore healthier breakfasts? toast is lovely as is peanut butter - I love it myself. I wouldn't have it every morning though. Weetabix and shredded wheat don't contain sugar or salt - they are also more filling than toast. Also eggs are good.

hairytriangle · 07/08/2010 23:08

Perfectly normal if that's all you gave fir breakfast. Do you use brown bread and low fat spread though? Peanut butter is full of good nutrition.

cantseeforlookin · 07/08/2010 23:08

Your body belongs to you and your baby - if you want peanut butter then your body probably needs whatever its got in it that makes you want to eat it... well it makes sense to me!. basically just trust yourself to take charge of what you eat .. stressing over a few peanuts each day will do you more harm than eating em. And all the low gi books recommend peanuts. so there!

BonniePrinceBilly · 07/08/2010 23:08

We need calories, as well as good fats, nothing at all wrong with peanut butter toast for breakfast. Add some fruit and a glass of milk, its perfect.

nannynobnobs · 07/08/2010 23:08

You WHAT? A midwife is recommending that a pregnant woman start her day with one slice of toast and nothing else? Who on this earth shares the toaster with their partner? Even my 3yo DD2 has 2 slices of toast in the morning.

LaundryLyne · 07/08/2010 23:09

YANBU. It's healthy to have a good breakfast, and people who eat breakfast are less likely to eat too much overall.

RobynLou · 07/08/2010 23:10

we have olive oil spread but I will have to own up to white bread.
I normally have an apple or bannana mid morning...

Other times i could have this plus boiled egg and orange juice or toast plus porridge with banana and apple!
