to think this is not 'excessive'

I''m 16 weeks pg, and I'm overweight. I've managed to not put anything on so far, and had an appointment with the midwife today, she'd asked me to keep a food diary for a few days so we could go through it together and figure out if there were any improvements that I could make.
very good of her and helpful I thought, esp as it's not possible to get a dietician app for months.
she didn't find fault with anything, except each morning I have two slices of toast for breakfast with a cuppa, normally with peanut butter, sometimes with marmalade. she said this was 'excessive for breakfast'
really?
is my view of eating so skewed that 2 slices of toast is excessive and I've never known?

What a load of rubbish Grin

Dont they say you shold eat breakfast like a king, lunch like prince and dinner like a porper (sp ?) I mean I had a breakfast bap heavens I would be extradited if she had anything to do with it.

You are doind well to control your eating as hormonal appetites can be devils to tame.

Best wishes for the rest of you pregnancy and dont let this midwife cause you any worry.

You are doing well to maintain you weight and dont feel bad of you grow a healthy 6lb plus baby and DO put some on! Smile

Morloth · 08/08/2010 11:48

Wholemeal/grain toast with some peanut butter on it is a LOT more useful to your body than just cereal.

Personally though I eat whatever the fuck I like while I am pregnant and for the first 4 months after having baby.

I am just getting back into working out/watching diet now (I don't diet though, life is too short).

You know what? It was worth the extra pounds to have had so much fun over the last year.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 08/08/2010 12:18

YABU - have a Gin & slimline tonic instead with a slice of lemon to cleanse your system.

MrsC2010 · 08/08/2010 12:23

2 slices of toast excessive?! Blimey, you don't want to see what I manage to put away sometimes. At present I am 1 wk overdue and am sat here on my giant bouncy ball eating a large packet of prawn cocktail 'Skip' things. Your mid-morning fruit sounds very virtuous.

CrunchyFrog · 08/08/2010 12:32

Of course, cornsilk is right. You should be eating cereal. Have you tried coco pops.

I am currently "changing habits" (NOT dieting, because if I say that word I immediately have to eat a family sized bar of cadbury's and a loaf of bread with butter.) I have switched cereal for a banana, a muller light or two, or berries and natural yoghurt with seeds or similar on, and it is very nice, especially at this time of year. I am sure that choice is wrong too, but it is better than what I was having, which was white bread and nutella. Grin

Aim= to maintain weight

Results = maintained weight

so where exactly is the problem?

There isn't one, and well done you for managing it. I always put on shedloads when PG / breastfeeding other than with ds1.

Yes, if you were on weightwatchers peanut butter would be a no-no0 but ou're not, and unless WW has changed dramatically of late they wouldn;t touch a 16 week pg woman anyway- there's a reason forr that, it's obvious, now enjoy your toast.

SanctiMoanyArse · 08/08/2010 12:42

Oh also the breakfast like a king etc thing works as long as you listen to your hunger about what you eat rather than follow routines

I ahve a huge apaprtite- really big one. Yet if I eat a proper cooked lunch then I do not want anything aboce a sandwich for dinner.

Do not want, as opposed to deny myself.

Win-win.

emptyshell · 08/08/2010 12:50

Oh god I've got all this to come haven't I? I'm now not only the bogeyman cos I'm overweight - I'm the new officially approved bogeyman because I'm overweight and pregnant.

Anyone tries that rubbish with me - they're getting beaten about the head with the three and a half stones I lost to GET pregnant. I'm not keeping a chuffing food diary considering my diet that lost me the weight was approved by and worked out with the doctor - they're gonna flipping well love me.

I hate this - it's bloody wrong that I should be dreading my booking in next month because I know that I'm just going to get a gobful of Governmentally sanctioned earbashing. Quite what they expect us to do when we're upduffed and they suddenly demand we're size 10 - I don't know... crash diet?! If anything I'm probably losing weight at the moment anyway since I've got a complete aversion to chocolate since pretty much the day sperm met egg!

Your breakfast sounds fine - if you know it's what you need to get you through to lunch without feeling faint or lightheaded - then stuff the celery gestapo. Peanut butter is stomach turningly vile though :P

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 08/08/2010 12:52

We have a four slice toaster, Dh would think about divorce if I suggested he only have 2 bits of toast rather than the 4 nevermind a midwife telling him he should only be having one.

I actually agree with moondog that Aibu probably isn't the best place to discuss food issues but I can safely say your midwife is a loon.

Robyn lou I am actually with Riven on this tell your MW to piss off (in nicer terms) next time she wants to weigh you. As long as you are happy with the quality of your diet there is not really a lot you can do about your weight now you are pregnant, yes if you end up with a c-section for whatever reason I think the anathestic person needs to know a rough weight but apart from that can't imagine what else it's useful for.

(and tbh I'm 30 weeks pregnant and sometimes don't eat any fruit during the day that's what pregnancy multi-vits are for ;) )

ladylobster · 08/08/2010 13:29

I think starting on a strict diet in pregnancy is ridiculous and 2 slices of toast is not excessive, she is an idiot and i would take no notice of her talking about breakfast like this

kelly2525 · 08/08/2010 23:13

Im pregnant and overweight, im also dieting, having around 1600 calories a day plus 60g of fat, and exercising most days, i was told by a fat midwife not to put on more than 2 stone, i dont intend to, so far at 17 weeks ive gained a couple of pounds, was also asked if i want to see a dietician, i said no thanks, have just lost 3 stone, so i wont waste nhs resources. Two slices of toast and peanut butter sounds like an ok breakfast to me, its not full of excessive saturated fat and cos of the slow release carbs pobably keeps you going througout the morning and stops you grazing on shite, i usually buy cashew or pistachio nut butter, i think its a slightly healthier option, still got fat in it, but good fats, and we all need fat. I agree with Libra, politely tell her to piss off, its not like your having a fucking deep fried mars bar for breakfast

PricklyThistle · 08/08/2010 23:23

RobynLou Sun 08-Aug-10 11:09:48...I didn't eat peanuts when pg with DD, but since then they've changed the recommendations...

WHAT???!!! I deprived myself of peanut butter TWICE for 9 months, and now they're saying it's OK?? Not impressed Grin

RobynLou · 08/08/2010 23:32

pricklythistle I know, I can't believe I deprived myself when pg last time for no reason! i've actually seen some evidence that eating peanuts helps prevent allergies!!!!

though if I hadn't been forced to not eat snickers bars (the only choc bar I really like) last time I probably would've put on another stone so it was prob a good thing in my case!
