to think this is not 'excessive'

I''m 16 weeks pg, and I'm overweight. I've managed to not put anything on so far, and had an appointment with the midwife today, she'd asked me to keep a food diary for a few days so we could go through it together and figure out if there were any improvements that I could make.
very good of her and helpful I thought, esp as it's not possible to get a dietician app for months.
she didn't find fault with anything, except each morning I have two slices of toast for breakfast with a cuppa, normally with peanut butter, sometimes with marmalade. she said this was 'excessive for breakfast'
really?
is my view of eating so skewed that 2 slices of toast is excessive and I've never known?

I wouldn't recommend Shredded Wheat though. Mainly because I suspect it's just made of garden spiders legs all wrapped up in a horrid crunchy pillow that tastes of dust.

cantseeforlookin · 07/08/2010 23:11

Think your MW's been on the magic mushrooms - sharing toasters?? She'll be taking you to see the fairies at the bottom of the garden next.

LetThereBeRock · 07/08/2010 23:12

Weetabix doesn't contain sugar or salt? Someone ought to tell the manufacturer.

Ingredients.
Wholegrain Wheat (95%), Malted Barley Extract, Sugar, Salt, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid.

breatheslowly · 07/08/2010 23:14

What is the purpose of this whole thing? Are you meant to not gain weight or actually lose weight while pregnant?

If you are just trying not to gain weight then you are achieving this so unless you are doing so on a diet of chip butties then well done and carry on as you were.

If you are meant to be losing weight then swapping the peanut butter for something less calorie dense might make sense or just having one slice. That said, I couldn't make it to lunch on one slice of toast and would end up eating the other slice later in the morning (or something equivalent).

Do MW actually train in giving diet advice? If not then the quality of advice is probably at the level that my mum gives, a combination of recent news articles and superstition, so be wary.

I had an argument with my dietitian about peanut butter on toast (am currently trying to lose weight). I was told I shouldn't be eating it whilst trying to lose weight, but I reasoned that it was very nutritious. I was pretty annoyed at first but I did see her point. Although it's wonderfully healthy, it is very fatty so maybe it's something to avoid if you're trying not to gain weight. Unless you have one slice with a thin spread and replace the other slice with fruit or yogurt.

ShrinkingViolet · 07/08/2010 23:16

your HV, for example, is a loon.

Decent bread with good peanut butter is a fab breakfast. Maybe add some fruit and yoghurt as a mid morning snack, but it's a damn sight better than the mainlining of chocolate muffins I managed with DD3 (so should have known better Blush)

mumeeee · 07/08/2010 23:16

2 slices of toast and peanut butte are fine for breakfast. You are supposed to eat more calories at breakfast than you do for lunch as it's the most important meal of the day.

RobynLou · 07/08/2010 23:18

At booking in my BMI was 38 Blush
I've never lost the 3 and a bit stone I gained having DD, and I was overweight then.
I know I need to sort myself out, but lifelong food issues and PND combined into an unholy mess....

The midwife wants me to not gain any weight throughout the pg, they don't recommend loosing when pg, esp as I have no actual health problems, low bp etc, I'm just big. They can't refer me to a dietician until I have health problems caused by being overweight (though it's a bit late then I thought?)

so I'm on a waiting list to see the dietician, but I'll be almost having the baby by the time I do...

what about swimming classes?I went to some while pregnant and really enjoyed them - are they called aquanatal? If you exercise you can eat as much toast as you like!

RobynLou · 07/08/2010 23:24

we don't have a car, so I walk and cycle everywhere, with 3yo DD coming along for the ride.
I have no childcare and I mainly work when DH is off, so though I'd love to go swimming, going without a 3 year old is rather impossible! I went when pg with DD and it was lovely, esp as I got more pg.

Our toaster has four holes - two each :)

RobynLou · 07/08/2010 23:25

DD starts preschool in september though... so I could go swimming then, something to look forward to Smile

Okay. So, you're not having any health problems, eating a normal breakfast, not eating badly the rest of the time. Well done! You'll lose weight after the baby is born, but for now the thing is to eat a healthy balanced diet and ignore mad Gillian McKeith types.

2 slices of toast is fine, imo, right up to the point you sling a fried egg and a rasher of bacon onto each one...

cantseeforlookin · 07/08/2010 23:29

Sainsburys and asda both do really tasty low fat peanut butter if it helps...

twolittlemonkeys · 07/08/2010 23:31

She'd have a fit at my breakfast... One MW had a massive go at me about my diet during my 1st pregnancy. I shrugged it off though as I was a size 8 (pre-pregnancy) and even at term my waist measurement was smaller than hers Grin

NeverPushWhenItSaysPull · 07/08/2010 23:36

By the end of each of my pregnancies, I weighed 18 stone. (Have worked on reducing that dramatically since, mind) Not a single health professional felt the need to remark on my weight. Exactly what qualifies a midwife to make nutritional judgements like that?

I'm aware of the irony of me, not a dietician either, talking about this, but common sense would dictate she's talking rubbish. During pregnancy is not a good time to consider hypocalorific diets and it's not the peanut butter on the toast that's the problem. It's the overlarge portion sizes, eating between meals, junk food etc that make someone overweight. And two slices of toast is not an overlarge portion. Hmm

cantseeforlookin · 07/08/2010 23:38

my mw was nowhere to be seen when I had my DTD's - then had a go at me for "allowing" them to give me a C section! Don't have a lot of faith in their utterances most of the time. Like most "health" people, they havn't got a clue half the time, churn out the same old stuff. Thing is, you already know what's good for you so just trust yourself.

breatheslowly · 07/08/2010 23:43

Well if you cut down your breakfast you would start to lose weight then, so don't!

You might want to check out whether not gaining any weight throughout pregnancy is actually the standard advice for women with your BMI or made up by your MW, as some MW do seem to make stuff up. I thought that all women are expected to gain something in the third trimester, but I am not an expert.

FindingMyMojo · 08/08/2010 00:00

not excessive - my perfect breakfast!

(humm I am rather hefty though(confused))

I'm amazed they are commenting. I was about 30 kilos overweight when I fell pg - no one was interested at all through the entire process.

ChippingIn · 08/08/2010 00:04

YANBU

Definitely do not allow this woman any say over your diet. Anyone who thinks 2 slices of toast with PB for breakfast for anyone, let alone a pregnant woman, is excessive - is a loon. When she asks about the food diary, tell her you intend spending your pregnancy being healthy and not obsessed and don't intend on doing one. If she persists, ask for a different MW.

Frankly, I'd be very wary of any advice from her and her attitude is patronising - I'd be rid of her myself.

TrinityRhino · 08/08/2010 00:05

I agree with cornsilk

you can be dead of a heart attack and be size 12

BonniePrinceBilly · 08/08/2010 00:10

2 slices of peanut butter toast is my snack between breakfast and brunch lunch. Blush

RobynLou · 08/08/2010 01:37

thankyou all!
this is actually the first time in my life I've maintained any weight, so I have been really struggling with how to do it - since I was 10 I've been either loosing or gaining, I've never stayed the same. So I'm an expert in loosing weight, but I've been really worried that I just don't know how to eat normally, not to loose weight or put it on but to stay the same.
I was really proud of managing to stay the same so far, and so to be told I was still getting it wrong knocked me for 6. I'm going to persist in trying to see a real dietician, even if it isn't until the baby's almost here, I think I do need some professional help.

I'm going to carry on with my pb on toast, but I'll mix it up a bit with a boiled egg or porridge when it gets colder Smile

RobynLou - does your local swimming pool/sports centre have a creche you could use?

And this is the second time tonight I've seen peanut butter mentioned. Think I'll be buying some tomorrow! Grin
