I'm a bit disgusted at a friend's FB picture showing her 3 year old drinking a glass of lager.

What's the consensus before I delete her? AIBU? I've already hidden her updates because of the constant swearing.

Yes and having pictures taken with Jordan is corrupting her young children too

stop over reacting and get a life

bellavita · 30/07/2010 11:27

Having sips of alcohol as a child has never done me any harm... I am neither chavvy or rough or a drunk.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 11:27

Thankyou chooks
It's not right to let a 3 year old drink beer and turn it into a joke.

I have a photo of DS1 aged about 5 having a sip of his dad's cider whilst watching the Tractor Pulling at a Traction Engine Rally.

This probably makes me many things but I'm not sure that chav is at the top of the list...

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 11:28

Would your mother have posted pictures of you doing this on the web though bella? (assuming it existed)

OP posts:
gingerkirsty · 30/07/2010 11:30

Belle I understand you feel strongly about this, but what this woman has posted is a photo of her child appearing to drink beer.

I think the consensus is on here that there is nowt wrong with that and I agree. What you cannot surmise from a photo is what happened before/after - if the child is allowed to drink any quantity (as opposed to a sip, which I feel is harmless and natural curiosity) then clearly this is unacceptable.

Anyway, to answer your question, why are you still friends with her anyway if you don't like her?

pagwatch · 30/07/2010 11:31

DS1 having sip of champagne at age 1 with my family laughing is now 17 and is the only one of his whole group of friends to never have been drunk. He has an astonishingly sensible attitude to alcohol.

A silly snapshot from toddlerhood does not creat drinking issues.

You have issues with this person so delete her.
But if anyone looked at my picture and decided that I was disgraceful or that I was part of the alcohol absuing culture, I would rightly consider them to be massively over reacting

bellavita · 30/07/2010 11:33

Probably belle - my mum is italian and there are loads of pics of my cousins and me having a small glass of wine at family do's. We have been brought up with alcohol from an early age.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 11:35

She's a relative ginger.

OP posts:
Chooks · 30/07/2010 11:36

Can someone explain to me why it's funny to see a toddler drinking alcohol?

I'm not saying it can cause long term damage, or turn them into an alcoholic - However, it is a drug, a drug that causes this country and individuals alot of problems. I can't see the joke in it?? Would it be just as funny to see a toddler 'pretending' to smoke? If not, why not?

usualsuspect · 30/07/2010 11:37

YABU... but if you don't like her delete her

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 11:37

Surly it's illegal to give a 3 year old beer because it's dangerous?

Fair enough, I am over reacting.

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 11:38

I don't find it funny chooks, alcohol is a drug and it destroys families and lives.

OP posts:
Chooks · 30/07/2010 11:39

We can over react together then

toccatanfudge · 30/07/2010 11:40

I have a photo of DS1 aged 4 months "drinking" a shot of whiskey............well it damn well looks like he was - he just had his hands cupped round it and the angle of the shot make it looks like he's knocking it back

pagwatch · 30/07/2010 11:40

I can't speak in generalities Chooks

But I remember the incident with DS1. He was only 1 , walked past my mother who had champagne and grabbed hold. She tried to take it back but he developed a vice like grip and got a sip ( and spilt quite a bit). The laughing was mostly the look of horror on my mothers face which may have been either that he was going to sip or, more likely that she was going to lose some and that she couldn't stop him

I have a photo of my then 10 month old holding up her dads can of lager and pretending to take a sip

The can was empty and the photo was posed

It is still on my FB page 4 years later - it was also part of a loop of photos that we had on our digital photo frame - when my HV saw it she laughed like a loon

Seriously - if you really think you should delete her over this then you just want to delete for any reason - just do it, and pretend to yourself that it's all about the beer rather than all about you

Chil1234 · 30/07/2010 11:42

If the beer was an isolated photo-joke from an otherwise admirable human-being then I have a feeling this wouldn't be an issue. But it seems to be the tip of a foul-mouthed, not-very-nice-person iceberg in this instance. And the beer is 'the last straw'...

lal123 · 30/07/2010 11:44

Of course its different from a photo of a child with a cigarette - cigarettes kill and smoking is socially unacceptable. Drinking in moderation is NOT harmful and is socially acceptable.

Chooks · 30/07/2010 11:44

pagwatch - to me, thats completley different to posing a picture

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 11:44

There's ways to teach children about alcohol and moderation, laughing and joking about it isn't the best way to teach them because alcohol isn't fun. There's nothing wrong with an older child sitting with a family and having a very small amount with a meal though.

My parents do actually have a photo of me pretending to smoke and drink wine aged 4 with my friend- we were playing dressing up and pretending to be our mums so my uncle got us to pose for it. Said photo has reappeared at every major birthday and my hen night with predictable captions along the lines of "plus ca change".

However it has not caused me any isshoos with substance addiction in adulthood.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 30/07/2010 11:47

lal, drinking does actually damage and kill, fetal alchol syndrome, drunk drivers etc. Since when was giving a very small child alcohol socially acceptable?

A child grabbing a glass isn't the same as this.

OP posts:
Chooks · 30/07/2010 11:48

Alcohol kills, and is more harmful overall to health than smoking. Very naive to suggest otherwise IMO. Also, in alot of situations it is not socially acceptable, no more than smoking I'd say.
