the vagina is the internal bit

Oh stop being such a pedant, we all KNOW it's actually called a 'vulva', but the world isn't going to stop spinning as soon as somebody calls it a vagina.

Zondra · 29/07/2010 17:17

Activate, I agree with you!

Bloody annoying!

scurryfunge · 29/07/2010 17:17

activate, why is this bothering you at teatime on a Thursaday?

scurryfunge · 29/07/2010 17:18

*Thursday!

Morloth · 29/07/2010 17:18

Common usage though and everybody knows what is meant, so who actually gives a fuck?

colditz · 29/07/2010 17:18

Women don't know that their whole genitalia isn't called the vagina because the vagina is the only part that men have traditionally been interested in. Up until recently, men wrote the curriculum, men decided what things were called and what was taught, and men have never treated any part of the woman's groin as important (except the vagina) so they never bothered telling people what it was all called.

sanielle · 29/07/2010 17:18

You are both wrong. It is called klunge. Or fanny. Or Axe wound

hobbgoblin · 29/07/2010 17:19

They do know they just prefer to say stuff like foof and fadge for some reason. Vulva makes me think of volcanoes and by extrapolation alll kinds of kinky things that I don't want to think about when in public.

activate · 29/07/2010 17:23

names are important otherwise why have them

i have heard parents proudly proclaim that their children will use the correct terminology of penis and vagina and it makes me want to holler

OP posts:
tyler80 · 29/07/2010 17:27

Only bothers me when it's in the context of someone proclaiming that their child is going to use the correct anatomical words, and never utter willy or fanny etc.

ArseHolio · 29/07/2010 17:30

I know what it's called but would never call it by it's real anatomical name. Vulva is such an ugly word.

Coolfonz · 29/07/2010 17:30

My boy is one year old now so i prefer to use spam ram as it's more mature. or spammius rammius if we are abroad.

Megatron · 29/07/2010 17:32

I don't actually care what anyone else calls their foof.

littlemissindecisive · 29/07/2010 17:38

surely it's a toot?

bluefrog · 29/07/2010 17:42

There was a thread on here a while ago about sex education in primary schools and they had labelled external body parts on pictures in the educational material. The vulva was labelled as a vagina, and it did annoy me. So YANBU.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 29/07/2010 17:43

Things can be called whatever we want them to be called. If I want to call my finger a frog then my finger becomes a frog. Poststructuralism, essentially...

treas · 29/07/2010 17:43

activate - actually not only does my dd Yr2 know what her vagina is but she also knows what her labia and clitoris are.

The latter she has known since the age of 3/4 yo as she kept telling us she had a willy just like her brother.

Her knowledge only became embarrassing when in the local theatre's public loo she announced loudly from her cubicle - "That's my clitoris, isn't it mummy!"

I didn't find out about 'vulva' and 'labia' until my mid-twenties. A consequence, I suspect, of the patriarchal education mentioned above.

Can't say I like 'Axe-wound' or 'bacon flaps' for that matter ... come to think of it, though, they're just as graphically representative as 'rose' and 'orchid'

If you'll excuse me, I'm just off to gently stroke my rosy, axe-wounded bacon flaps.

katkouta · 29/07/2010 17:48

oh I always thought it was a hoop. Hoops and tails aren't they?

NoahAndTheWhale · 29/07/2010 17:49

DS and DD both know about vulvas. I don't like the word (maybe becuase we used to have a Volvo?) but do know what it means. Haven't moved on to clitoris and labia yet (for ds and dd- I know what they are)

tethersend · 29/07/2010 17:51

Tsk.

How childish.

We all know it's pissflaps.
