I see what you are saying, LeQueen, and I am sorry if I have hurt your feelings.

Gigantaur · 24/07/2010 23:31

I am both dyslexic and a lazy typist.

it makes for barely legible posts i am sure.

2shoes · 24/07/2010 23:44

Gigantaur don't put your self down, you would never go on someones "happy" thread and try to ruin it by being snide.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 23:52

if i get the jist of thread dont care about spelling

CakeandRoses · 24/07/2010 23:53

YANBU, it is a little childish to pull posters up on spelling and grammar but I can understand why people get an overwhelming urge to do it.

The 'brought instead of bought' thing is not really a grammar mistake, it's simply the wrong word and for that reason I think that makes it a bit more fair game.

2shoes · 24/07/2010 23:54

scottishmummy thanks

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 23:57

digging up about spelling/syntax so rude.speaks volumes about the person doing it

missmiss · 25/07/2010 00:35

Ha, yes, I made a typo - 'thsn' should have been 'than'. As I said, though, typos don't bother me, it's illiteracy that gets on my wick.

And to whomever said they hoped I was more sympathetic to dyslexic kids, I'm well aware that some children have genuine difficulties with this kind of thing, even if they don't have a statement, and I do offer support. However, secondary-age children or adults producing work in an academic or professional context should be capable of checking or having checked their work before submitting it for scrutiny. Speedy online typing is one thing; an A-level essay is another.

And I have never criticised anyone on MN for their spelling/punctuation, because as other posters have pointed out, it's a fairly informal medium. Doesn't mean their mistakes don't make me shudder, though!

scottishmummy · 25/07/2010 00:39

lol,the screech of your backtracking is audible

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/07/2010 00:40

see how easy it is to do missmiss?

typos bother some. not me. nowt bothers me. except piccy sods pulling my posts to little bits. that bothers me. especially if it has no relevance to the thread.

all the pedants should go to the corner of the board made just for you.
its called pedants corner.

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/07/2010 00:41

forgot my to keep it friendly....

missmiss · 25/07/2010 00:45

I didn't think I was backtracking; I just think there's a difference (often perceptible) between genuinely finding spelling etc difficult and not caring how things are spelt/correct grammar. I have had more than half a bottle of wine, though, so may not be coming across too clearly...

And I maintain that no matter how sympathetic I am consciously to people's difficulties, I still wince when I encounter them. My boyfriend is the same in his attempts to teach me the guitar: he tries to be sympathetic to my total lack of musical ability, but it still pains him and he doesn't really understand why I find it so difficult!

scottishmummy · 25/07/2010 00:48

you back peddle more than tour de france.ease up on the bold

confuddledDOTcom · 25/07/2010 00:52

What does annoy me though, more on Facebook where you're using real names, and people misspell or shorten your name when they don't know you. I peed someone off once because they insisted on misspelling my name so I used a shortened version. After a couple of posts she said "my name is... not..." so I said I thought we were on shortening terms. FFS the name is there, doesn't take much to read who you're replying to!

missmiss · 25/07/2010 01:05

I didn't actually realise using asterisks would bold the word...oops. And of course I make typos, everyone does. There's a difference, though, between making a typo and not knowing the difference between, say, your and you're.

scottishmummy · 25/07/2010 01:24

youre a ticket missmiss
you make typo and its hey everyone does it = no biggie.others do so it is "and i loathe misspellings and poor grammar - those kinds of error leap out at me and cause a visceral reaction: misplaced or missing apostrophes make me physically shudder"

haha do you have involuntary movements about your own posts then?or just everyone else mistakes

what you have splendidly illustrated is the smug mcsmugnress of i never make mistakes is so untenable....you made a mistake

your typos....were they "wilfully negligent" or erroneous.you being a teacher and all that as you mentioned it

I shuddered to read my own typo. But my original post wasn't about typos, which are fairly obvious, but misspellings. 'Definately', for example, is not a typo, it's a spelling mistake, and it jumps out at me when I see it. But I've never pulled anyone up on it on here! However, if one of my students wrote it, they would get the red pen.

theyoungvisiter · 25/07/2010 11:28

would it be cruel to note that in Missmiss's post, "whomever said" should be "whoever said"?

Let he who is without sin etc etc...

2shoes · 25/07/2010 11:47

but this thread isn't about school kids being marked.
it is about picky people being nasty and judgey about peoples bad grammar and spelling.
and yes I don't care if I have mispelt grammar.

The sad thing is in this country, is that not everybody does have the same standard of education. I for one had a really shit education during the 1980s, especially in secondary school. I cant ever remember being taught spelling rules in high school. A red pen and spellings corrected does not help teach a child to spell.

Looking at the education threads on here shows that there is still a big difference between the best and worst schools. So I think its really unfair to say that good spellings and grammar = inteligent and a worthy poster.

Anybody has the right to join MN. We don't have to do a spelling test and we all have a right to post. There have been plenty people who are highly inteligent who are iliterate. We should not be judged on ability to spell.

I wonder if in RL these people are as quick to judge by a persons accent.

hmc · 25/07/2010 20:37

"So I think its really unfair to say that good spellings and grammar = inteligent and a worthy poster"

It's not that it is unfair - it is that it is a stupid and ill-informed generalisation. My dd will never been able to spell well due to her dyslexia and yet she is more intelligent than all but 3% of mumsnet posters (she is on 97th percentile for cognitive ability).

hmc · 25/07/2010 20:40

I am liking that last sentence of mine - think that will get under certain posters skins (cackles wickedly)
