on here(mn) I mean ffs
can I just say arse holes to anyone who does that?

OP posts:
suwoo · 23/07/2010 23:01

Yep, they do. Especially in a thread titled as above.

Sorry.

OrmRenewed · 23/07/2010 23:03

There's nothing wrong with the odd mistake but somtimes I wonder if the poster actually speaks English. Does it matter? Well no, nothing much matters when you think about it, short of life and death, but we tend to care about lots of little things. Why not the way we communicate?

2shoes · 23/07/2010 23:03

tbh I think I am just bloody angry and venting.
I posted cos I was really happy about somethingreally happy
most people shared my joy.one just thought .....oh yippee a chance to stamp on her.

OP posts:
OrmRenewed · 23/07/2010 23:04

Sorry to hear that.

TheCrackFox · 23/07/2010 23:04

Oh, yes I hate it when people make a spelling mistake but then post again to correct that mistake.

2shoes · 23/07/2010 23:05

OrmRenewed I am still happy and excited

OP posts:
BertieBasset · 23/07/2010 23:07

Provided you understand what someone is trying to say then I don't think it matters.

I went to a grammar school and didn't notice the grammer spelling. Knew what OP meant though so who cares?!

crisproll2 · 23/07/2010 23:09

I think if the thread is about that very subject people will comment.
I posted again today to correct my spelling. Dont see what the problem is. Everyone makes spelling/grammatical errors at some point. I dont see the hassle in having it pointed out.

bosch · 23/07/2010 23:09

I'd say that context is everything - if you're just having a chat then it's irrelevant, but otherwise, there is always a risk that spelling/grammar mistakes reveal that you are a)drunk, b)14 and a troll or c)thick and therefore your views count for nothing (I've read this through 5 times...how may typos etc did I miss...)

MiladyDeSummer · 23/07/2010 23:09

I went to a Grammar school and only learnt to spell the word decades later.

Says a lot really.

Maylee · 23/07/2010 23:10

Here is my theory prepares to be flamed.

I work full time - job involves a lot of official-type writing. So, I write properly in RL but on an internet forum, I'm relaxed and not paying so much attention to every single word and sentence. It's an internet forum FFS.

So my theory is that the people who are obsessed with correcting the grammar of others, are like that because they have nothing better to do. Perhaps they have given up work to care for child(ren) full time and so need to find some way of proving their worth in an "adult-world"(IMO, SAHMs already have my admiration - not sure I could do it).

Correcting grammar on an internet forum simply screams of arrogance......

thefirstmrsDeVere · 23/07/2010 23:11

Agree.

Hate to see posters being corrected on spelling and grammar. Mainly because mine is crap and it embarresses me.

I dont read long posts without paragraphs though. Txt spk drives me bonkers.

I dont correct my spelling but I do that (sp) thing. Because I know I cant spell, I am embarressed about it but I am not thick.

Picking on someones spelling when they are posting a 'I am really happy' post seems more than a bit mean.

2shoes · 23/07/2010 23:13

I can't do text stuff, so I just spell it badly lol

OP posts:
teamcullen · 23/07/2010 23:15

But Bosch. Im not a good speller and Im not drunk or a 14 year old troll.

That doesnt mean Im thick and my views dont count!

suwoo · 23/07/2010 23:15

I always type/spell much better when I am pissed.

See???

TheCrackFox · 23/07/2010 23:17

I am a 14 yr old drunk troll.

usualsuspect · 23/07/2010 23:19

I don't give a fuck about grammar or spelling on MN tbh

2shoes · 23/07/2010 23:20

i will want to be a 14 year old drunk troll on the happy night......i might fit in better.

so come on some one ........

it it..
I bought a cat and brought it home?
or

I brought a cat and bought it home

yikesascorpiobaby · 23/07/2010 23:20

2shoes it was mean for someone to spoil your thread about being happy, agreed.

Having said that, I hate text speak with a vengeance. And grammatical errors, and some spelling errors (though there are several words which I am not sure of at all) I suppose I mean there/their/they're and that kind of thing- the rules are simple and just need learning. Would not ever pick someone up on it though, that would be like singling out a child in a class.

Disagree that an internet forum should not follow rules of Standard English though- it's a public domain and I think that there should be public standards- you wouldn't expect a newspaper to be in text speak or contain errors for example.

2shoes · 23/07/2010 23:21

yikesascorpiobaby I was sooooo excited I am supised I managed to post in the right topic

OP posts:
BaronessBomburst · 23/07/2010 23:23

Some posts are so badly spelled, punctuated or in text-speak so as to be almost incomprehensible - other than that I don't think it matters that much. We're chatting on a forum not submitting a thesis.

That said, I've lived abroad for so long now I can't spell in English anymore, my sentence structure is stuffed, and I mix up my languages. I posted on an abortion thread a few days ago and spelt it 'abortian'. Oh dear........seriously considered a new identity/ name change after that one!

yikesascorpiobaby · 23/07/2010 23:26

Just seen thread 2shoes, definitely a bit petty there

MiladyDeSummer · 23/07/2010 23:26

And sometimes MNers are a bit er, drinken tired, especially on a Friday night.

I like unusual posting styles. I like tigga's sign-offs and aitch's lack of capitalisation and cod's pun user-names and odd typing.

Life's Rich Pageant innit?

2shoes · 23/07/2010 23:28

yikesascorpiobaby well I will be in the same "room" as him so maybe some one is a little green

OP posts:
teamcullen · 23/07/2010 23:29

Ive seen a few posts which there are loads of spelling mistakes, but I think if spelling is so bad the poster is most likely to be dyslexic or has other problems.

I think if we let dads have an opinion, why not bad spellers.
