on here(mn) I mean ffs
can I just say arse holes to anyone who does that?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 24/07/2010 17:11

If they are going on about how intelligent and superior they are then no. If they're on a pedants' thread it's fun (and it happens to me all the time). Otherwise yes. Especially if it's sensitive or the OP is upset.

equinox · 24/07/2010 17:14

I wouldn't put a comment on but I do hate poorly spelt English and bad grammar!

Ok come and shoot me now ....

ThatVikRinA22 · 24/07/2010 17:18

yanbu. it seriously pisses me off. the other day on a thread someone said something and someone went into the ins and outs of the word infer vs imply, pulling someone up over their wrong use of the word... it was on a politics thread and i just thought wtf?? superior and wanky.

if its on pedants corner then fair enough. but not in the middle of a normal thread.

my first post on mn was picked to bits on here because of spelling or grammar or something and i felt like a naughty girl being told off, then i looked at the poster telling me off and her grammar and spelling was terrible! cheeky mare.

there is no need.

usualsuspect · 24/07/2010 17:22

I would hate to think people would be put off posting on MN, because they are scared of getting pulled up on their spelling etc

missmiss · 24/07/2010 19:08

I loathe misspellings and poor grammar - those kinds of error leap out at me and cause a visceral reaction: misplaced or missing apostrophes make me physically shudder. I can't control it; it's instinctive.

I also think people should care about spelling and grammar; it upsets me when someone obviously doesn't give a thought to the way that they're presenting themselves and their ideas. I'm a teacher, by the way, which might go some way towards explaining it. Typos are one thing; wilful negligence is another.

My most recent bugbear is 'then' for 'thsn'; I've seen this a lot in the Guardian lately, and it makes me scream because it's not a typo, it's a grammatical error. If a national newspaper can't be bothered to pay attention to this kind of thing, who else will? I can envisage a world in which the word 'than' has disappeared, and it makes me sad

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 19:16

LOL "wilful negligence" mn isnt affidavit submission it is only recreational blah blah.which most of us do outwith of work, and not wanting be be encumbered by protocols and rules

and spelling really doesn't matter.i dont care about syntax on mn.mine or anyone else

BoysAreLikeDogs · 24/07/2010 19:20

how can thsn be anything other than a typo?

I am perplexed

EmmaKateWH · 24/07/2010 19:25

I wouldn't correct someone's spelling or grammar on MN, its obnoxious. I quite often type a post quickly and then if I go back to the thread later I can see that I have done a few typos myself. If someone pointed one of these out to me I would be totally fucked off, as I know exactly how to spell/do proper apostrophes etc and any mistakes are a result of not having time to proof read posts on MN the way I would proof read a document at work!
However, where someone has made a glaring error that is clearly not a typo - rather a result of not knowing how to do an apostrophe etc, it does make me cringe!!
I think that if you are used to producing high quality written documents for professional purposes, and reading high quality documents produced by other professionals, then you don't really expect to see basic grammatical mistakes, and is does make me judge the poster a bit, to be perfectly honest, though I agree it would be very snide to point out their mistakes to them.

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 19:29

i write professional documents/reports for work.mn isnt work, and cannot demand the same rigours.and presuming or judging on basis of post composition is a very wanky

2shoes · 24/07/2010 19:31

imo there is a lot of difference in a thread on mn and a job application.
I am sad that some people have nothing better to do than be so nasty.

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 24/07/2010 19:32

tbh I've never once thought about it. I sometimes genuinely can't understand people's posts. That's quite rare though

I don't think I would really mind being corrected. It would depend on the tone a bit. I'm ok if there is a bit of banter there but otherwise I might be offended, really don't know.

usualsuspect · 24/07/2010 19:32

I shall expect an E- on all my posts then

ZZZenAgain · 24/07/2010 19:36

must try harder usualsus, not enough typos there

I always assume that if someone makes a mistake it is a typo. I make tons, absolutely tons of them. I am definitely getting an E

E- even

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 19:37

quite like the notion of incandescent pedants, itchy at bed spelling.makse me want to spell badly just to get them...there is a perverse pleasure in imagining a clenchie getting all fraught about spelling.tutting well she will never amount to anyfink that one

Goblinchild · 24/07/2010 20:10

S'Ok, I pick my fights. And Vicarinatutu is a mate, so I control my cat's bumface or she'd give me a slap.
Plus being a parent of teenagers, it's better not to be too easy to wind up.
Dinna fash yersel' scottishmummy.

hmc · 24/07/2010 20:35

"I loathe misspellings and poor grammar - those kinds of error leap out at me and cause a visceral reaction: misplaced or missing apostrophes make me physically shudder. I can't control it; it's instinctive"

OMG and you are a teacher! - please tell me you have more understanding of the dyslexic children in your class (you probably have at least 2 - and it is quite likely they have not been identified, clue: they probably have issues with times tables too and with sequencing etc (months of the year)...usually there is a working memory issue.

stainesmassif · 24/07/2010 20:36

lol - thsn is a typo for 'than'

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 20:39

i ken furry boot city.wheres nae knicker city

HowAnnoying · 24/07/2010 20:46

People only seem to correct spelling or grammar when they are disagreeing with what that person has said. They use it to belittle them, not to be helpful. It's pathetic.

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 20:47

yes it is passive aggressive bullying.im still sniggering at wilfully negligent.for millionth time dont exaggerate

ThatVikRinA22 · 24/07/2010 21:40
