To think that Denise Fergus should have stayed at home?

I don't understand why she (mum of Jamie Bulger) had to go and sit in court when John Venables was being sentenced for his more recent crime. I will never forget the horror of hearing what happened to her little boy, and I know that she will never get over it - but how can it possibly help her to keep appearing on tv and making statements about what happens now? She seems to feel she has a right to be told all about everything, and while I can sympathise with her opinion to a certain extent I don't know that she does really. I saw her being interviewed when he was arrested earlier in the year and she said she'd had to keep her children off school because of the publicity - but she seems to be generating a lot of it herself.
Please don't think me hard hearted, it's just that I don't get it.

He wasn't unsupervised, she was in a fucking shop, in a fucking shopping mall, a few meters away from him.

Every parent has lost sight of their child for a minute and can't find them, and if you say you haven't then you're lying.

Denise Fergus was not to blame for not forseeing that two children would abduct, torture and then murder her child, and I'm offended that you are saying she is.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 25/07/2010 21:22

I lost my son in mothercare once one second he was by my side next he was gone. I expect I deserved to have him abducted and murdered as well. I mean that would have taught me a lesson wouldn't it Just piss off back to your sad little world deswhateveryournameis.

LadyBlaBlah · 25/07/2010 21:22

People unknowingly put their children at risk every day

I would dispute your "wander about unsupervised" line anyway

noddyholder · 25/07/2010 21:22

It is not for us to judge her but I do think if she does decide to attend every hearing there is no need for it to be reported in the press. There is truly nothing to be gained for her or her son from having her face on teh front of the papers all these years later.the papers don't give a toss about her or her son they just want sales.

it's totally untrue.

Most people have only seen the footage of Thompson and Venables leading James away - there is also footage of a frantic Denise looking for her child - seconds after he wandered out of the shop.

LadyBlaBlah · 25/07/2010 21:24

Interesting article about the theme of this thread here

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/07/2010 21:26

most people have had a heart in mouth moment where they have lost sight of their children. i think its terribly unfair to suggest that she was at fault for what happened next.

SalFresco · 25/07/2010 21:29

LadyBlaBlah thanks for the link, v. interesting.

desanimaux · 25/07/2010 21:32

They were ALL children. There are children out there, right now, who need support and intervention to prevent them from being the next 'Venables and Thompson'.
But we'd all rather say Something Wicked This Way Comes and absolve ourselves of responsibilty.

wukter · 25/07/2010 21:35

You're a tool Desanimaux, whether you are a- a troll, or b- genuinely that heartless.

noddyholder · 25/07/2010 21:35

Desanimaux you have worded your posts badly for what you are trying to say even though there is a grain at least of truth in it(apart from blaming her which is unforgiveable and I suspect you said it out of frustration rather than conviction)My main problem with all cases like these is the way teh gutter press in this country manipulates its readers in order to cultivate a pack mentality rather than ever consider educating them on the criminal justice system and why certain procedures have to be followed.I am shocked at times with the 'I hope they get whats coming to them' attitude

FallingWithStyle · 25/07/2010 21:36

"absolve ourselves of responsibility"?

Please explain...I see no one advocating mistreatment, abuse, neglect of children that may or may not lead to behavioural problems.

I dont think that is even relevant to this particular discussion tbh.

Not going to explain your earlier comments then?

zeno · 25/07/2010 21:36

OP, I think you're last sentence is the crux of it: "Please don't think me hard hearted, it's just that I don't get it."

You're not hard-hearted, you're just struggling to understand her actions because it's not possible for you to walk in her shoes for a bit to see how it feels.

I'm saddened by the number of people on this thread saying "it can't be good for her". What the hell would you know about it exactly? Be thankful you all haven't had to find out what's good to do in those circumstances and stop reaching for your judgey pants.

desanimaux · 25/07/2010 21:38

And dispute "wander about unsupervised" all you like.
I know who believe.
She was asked on several occasions to watch her child and she didn't.

AgentZigzag · 25/07/2010 21:38

You're right that we all have a responsibility for those children who need support and for our own.

But you have put the murder of James Bulger squarely and soley at the door of Denise Fergus, and you are wrong in that accusation. Very wrong.

SalFresco · 25/07/2010 21:40

Who is it that you believe?! That doesn't make sense!

LadyBlaBlah · 25/07/2010 21:40

desanimaux - Your argument is so poor it barely warrants a reply

However, just because you believe they were all children, and that Venables and Thompson were victims of their childhoods, it does not mean that it was Denise Fergus' fault that James was abducted and murdered.

Do you think Sara Payne was at fault for letting her daughter out to play on her own?

AgentZigzag · 25/07/2010 21:40

Asked by who to watch her child? Link for credible evidence please.

desanimaux · 25/07/2010 21:41

I'm not blaming her, lots of us lose sight of our DCs in shops. But she's a one trick pony! What does she want FFS?!

LadyBlaBlah · 25/07/2010 21:42

Name your sources - because sounds like a croc of shit urban myth to me

desanimaux · 25/07/2010 21:42

The staff in at least one department store in Bootle. It's a fact!

SalFresco · 25/07/2010 21:42

"one trick pony"

And again, who is it that you believe?

wukter · 25/07/2010 21:43

Disgusted.

FallingWithStyle · 25/07/2010 21:44

Desanimaux - you, of course, are entitled to your opinion on venables and thompson, on the leagal system, on society's responsibility for the vulnerable etc...

But the comments about Denise Fergus are so highly personal and offensive you really should be ashamed.
