I asked for a white coffee and the barista said she couldn't do that - offered me an Americano and directed me to add my own milk - except the jug was empty - blooming annoying. So it's not just the punters who don't know what they're talking about OP, it's the baristas too, or should that be baristi?

Rockbird, I think I am officially the only person in Britain who can't stand any type of coffee. I only ever drink tea.

But...you would be amazed how difficult it is to get a cup/pot of tea with fresh milk, rather than UHT shite. I have had stand up arguments (in John Lewis mainly) with staff who claim the stuff in those little platic containers IS fresh milk and tastes the same. OH NO IT DOESN'T.

And relax.

filter is slightly less tasty than americano (this is based on pret orders only) though i suppose this could depend on how fresh the filter is.

Hang on, surely coffee's only two types - instant (i.e. freeze dried) or filter / percolator. What kind of coffee's IN a latte / Americano if it's not filter coffee??

americano = espresso topped up with water - so one shot of coffee has hot water forced through it very quickly
filter = pile of coffee has hot water dripped through it slowly.

only my opinion, but the taste of americano is richer than that of filter.

If you ask for white you get a stupid fluffy latte... if you ask for flat white...it is stronger coffee but with hot fluffy milk...the only way to get cold milk is with an americano.

This is my dh's pet hate. In a restaurant the other day he asked for a "black americano". I ribbed him saying an americano was a black coffee etc, etc. Then along came his black americano WITH milk. Dcs didn't mind though - they drank the milk

Whoever made the strawberries and cream analogy earlier, surely that's wrong? It's not like asking for strawberries and cream and then being offered cream, surely it's like asking for strawberries and being offered cream. Strawberries don't inherently possess cream, and you have asked for strawberries, thus implying that you don't want cream. But some people like to eat them with cream so you're being offered it in the event you are one of them?

Basically I think YABU, it's milk and some people like their Americano with milk even that renders it void as an Americano.

No... swap the strawberries for blueberries or bananas and cream and then you ask "oh can I have banana and cream please" and the waitress relply "why yes, would you like some cream with your order of bananas and cream?" and you say "Oh yes I want cream with my order of banan and cream as that is what I ordered"

That would be really silly to order wouldn't it and then be asked if you want that.

I'm not a fan of coffee. It does smell nice but tastes nasty IME. So I stick with tea or hot chocolate.

Surely the paying customer is always right. If they want milk give it to them.
