To be feel a little bit annoyed when they ask me if I want milk with my Americano?

Um, obviously not, hence why I've specified an "Americano". I know whose fault it is - people asking for one and then asking for "a bit of milk" as well

That's a much better idea ivykaty. Clearly in Spain they understand that people like their Americanos watered down to different levels.

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2010 21:55

I ask though now for an expresso in a large cup and hot water in a jug - that way I still get to do what I want to, that is if I am not having a latte or iced latte.

The thing is in one of my local coffee shops it really doesn't matter what I ask for as the wiater never gets it first time as he drools over my dd1

Ixia · 22/07/2010 22:06

If you ask for an "ordinary" white coffee in our Costa, then you get an Americano with milk. Flat white is milky shite. So now I ask for an Americano with milk.....sorry, YABU.

OrmRenewed · 22/07/2010 22:09

What happens if you walk into a coffee 'emporium' with baristas and ask for 'a cup of coffee'? Do they stop and wait for more input? Or just snigger at you?

said · 22/07/2010 22:14

Ixia - if you ask for milk, that's no problem. But I don't want the barista to check with me whether or not I want milk. No, I would have asked for milk if I did.

Not bothered about the milk with the americano but have to say asking for a "panino" is ridiculous! I had a friend who used to say this and it grated on me every time - it sounds soooo pretentious and cringeworthy when you are speaking English and not Italian!

UnquietDad · 22/07/2010 22:59

My other problem is that when asking for an "Americano" you obviously have to resist the urge to burst into "blue jeans and Chinos, Pepsi and Oreos, oh-oh-oh-oh, in the land of the free, you can be what you wanna be."

[tumbleweed]

That'll be just me then.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 22/07/2010 23:12

Don't resist it, UQD, just go with the flow. Preferably with a video camera and a live stream to YouTube on hand, of course...

BeenBeta · 22/07/2010 23:21

Surely an Americano with a bit of milk instead of a bit of water in is just a Macchiato?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 22/07/2010 23:27

But a Macchiato is

espresso + milk

and an Americano with milk is

espresso + hot water + milk.

There ought to be a fancy name for an Americano with milk (goodness knows there's a name for seemingly every other combination), but I can't think what it might be.

said · 22/07/2010 23:31

Exactly Prof. An Americano with milk needs its own name. That's the answer.

Ha, this subject has its own Facebook group. With, erm, 53 members

I've just joined one to do with the correct pronunciation of bruschetta

Actually people can say it with a "sh" if they like as long as they aren't taking my order using a cod Italian accent and correcting me.

donkeyderby · 23/07/2010 00:13

Since we're in a recession, shouldn't we be abandoning coffee shops with their overpriced, ludicrously named, milky nonsense, and returning to the good old vacuum flask of instant coffee? A tartan blanket if it's cold, or a wee drop of spirits (a 'cafe correcto' as I believe it's called in Spain).

Coffee shops must be one of the biggest rip-offs of the last decade.

BeenBeta · 23/07/2010 07:11

NOOOoooo!

If we stop drinking overpriced coffee it will crash the economy!

gorionine · 23/07/2010 07:19

Yanbu

I hate to be asked "Large or small?" when I order an espresso!

Rockbird · 23/07/2010 07:55

This is why this country has gone to shite. There was none of this when we all drank a good strong cup of tea.

Embrace the teapot!

ivykaty44 · 23/07/2010 08:58

donkeyderby - you can keep your instant shitcoffee and tartan rug, I will use thermal coffee mug and have a ground coffee inside whether shop brought or made at home - but instant is just not woth drinking you may as well drink to water - yuk

Buddjela · 23/07/2010 09:06

YABU and I think you might need to get over yourself, and worry about more important things than someone asking (not putting) milk in a coffee you have the money to buy

HowsTheSerenity · 23/07/2010 09:08

I had never heard of an Americano until I moved here. It's called a Long Black in Australia. And yes, Costa can't make a flat white. At all.

StealthPolarBear · 23/07/2010 09:09

"Asking for a black americano is like asking for it twice imo. Like asking for a black filter coffee with no milk. "

well that is what i ask for, because if I ask for a "black coffee" I am invariably asked "Would you like milk?"
People DO NOT LISTEN

No UQD, you are not alone, everytime i see the stupid name for a coffee I have that song in my head all day

So explain please, what is the actual difference between a filter coffee & an Americano?

StealthPolarBear · 23/07/2010 09:10

why do these sorts of threads always attract the "don't you have anything more important to worry about?" lot? Have you never posted a light hearted / trivial thread? You need to lighten up a bit and learn to join in with some of the less serious stuff.

Casserole · 23/07/2010 09:37

UQD is making me laugh on this thread.

Please please PLEASE to tell me where I can buy a wafer shaped like the Pope.

I'd even accept a panino shaped like Ghandi.

StealthPolarBear · 23/07/2010 09:45

Am I the only person who prefers instant? I can drink filter coffee but it's a bit cloying

stainesmassif · 23/07/2010 09:51

yes, you are the only person who prefers instant! tastes like mud!
