To be feel a little bit annoyed when they ask me if I want milk with my Americano?

Um, obviously not, hence why I've specified an "Americano". I know whose fault it is - people asking for one and then asking for "a bit of milk" as well

Its called a black coffee where I work ..It makes me laugh when people ask for an Americano, all poncey like

UnquietDad · 22/07/2010 21:04

It annoys me that I have to call it an "Americano".

I want to be able to walk into a coffee shop/ up to a coffee bar, ask for "a coffee" and get a plain, straightforward filter coffee - and for that to be the norm. The default.

You want a bloody latte vanilla moccachino frappuccino delight with cream and sprinkles and bells and whistles and a wafer shaped like the Pope, that's your lookout, but you should have to ask for it specifically. Me, I just want a white coffee made in a proper percolator.

i find that if you ask for a black coffee they'll give you one. you don't HAVE to call it an americano

just as I ask for it small, rather than primo. on account of not being italian.

UnquietDad · 22/07/2010 21:06

Starbucks' categories irritate me too. Since when did "Grande" not mean "big"?

thisisyesterday · 22/07/2010 21:11

now UD, you just need to stop going to costa/starbucks

i have to say, for a bog-standard filter coffee, our local baker's oven is not the worst in the world!

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2010 21:12

ask for a flat white - a coffee with just plain milk

latte if you want a coffee with frothy milk

cappacino if you want all froth and coffee

an americano if you want the coffee with hot water poured into it

or an expresso if you want a small storng coffee

It annoyed me when I asked for a latte and got a flat white - when I explained that I want froth on my latte I was told "it is not how we do it" well thats fine - but a latte has frothy milk

TheOldestCat · 22/07/2010 21:13

I find if you ask for a white coffee though you often get frothy too milky things.

So I ask for an Americano with milk. Sorry

Brilliant to ask for a panino . I shall ask for this henceforth.

Americano isn't the same as filter coffee, though, is it? Americano is a shot of espresso topped up to conventional coffee dimensions with hot water (I think), and so I don't see anything odd in asking for one of those with milk. A filter coffee with milk, a latte, an Americano with milk and a Flat White are all fairly plain milky coffee but they all differ from each other to a greater or lesser degree.

usualsuspect · 22/07/2010 21:20

Americano and filter coffee are different yes

thisisyesterday · 22/07/2010 21:21

espresso not expresso

UnquietDad · 22/07/2010 21:23

Some places list "Americano" and "filter coffee" side by side as if they are interchangeable though.

UnquietDad · 22/07/2010 21:24

Yes, if you say "expresso" you will get shot by David Mitchell.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 22/07/2010 21:27

Hmm... so David Mitchell would actually turn up in person, then?

Could be a new urban legend in the vein of Candyman...

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 22/07/2010 21:28

I do ask for a panino, if I have to do anything other than hand one over and grunt...

UnquietDad · 22/07/2010 21:29

I dare you also to ask for two cappuccini.

Yes, the customer asking for milk = no big deal. The customer saying I want an Amricano = snappy transaction, no bullshit here. I do not want to then discuss whether or not I want milk. No, no, no.

CKN decides more pros and shouts expresso, expresso, expresso in the mirror

stainesmassif · 22/07/2010 21:34

said, i would just give in and request a 'black americano' - no need for barista to inquire vis milk.

i always ask for a dry white wine and soda rather than spritzer to prevent myself being wound up when the bar person asks if i want lemonade. that's a wine shandy. and probably for another thread.

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2010 21:36

Asking for an americano with milk is like asking for strawberries and cream with cream

onepieceoflollipop · 22/07/2010 21:36

I like black coffee and I always ask for a filter coffee. If it looks like this might come with milk automatically (I keep an eye on the person doing it) I add "no milk thanks" for good measure.

I find that an Americano often tastes slightly "weaker" than a proper filter coffee.I guess because it is an espresso topped up with hot water then some places add a bit too much hot water?

Only once have I been told that there is no filter coffee and it was suggested I have an Americano (this was M&S cafe; the woman knew that they were different but the filter machine was broken so couldn't do me a filter coffee)

alicet · 22/07/2010 21:36

Clearly you don't really have anything in life to worry about if this annoys you.

(not read whole thread so sorry if aibu by stealth and there is relevant information that means OP is NBU)

onepieceoflollipop · 22/07/2010 21:38

Asking for a black americano is like asking for it twice imo. Like asking for a black filter coffee with no milk.

ivykaty44 · 22/07/2010 21:39

But you can ask for an expresso with hot water served on the side and this is how it is served in northan Spain.

it took me ages to work out how to get a large black coffee in northern Spain and an Australian helped me out, you ask for an americano there and they serve you just that, it either comes as it is or mostly an expresso in a large cup with a jug of hot water.

stainesmassif - you're right. But sometimes, just sometimes, I just Americano and count to ten and hope.
