Op:

Hi, DD due in three months and we can't decide between Beth and Hannah for her name. Which do you prefer?

Response: They're okay. But I prefer Jessica or Lucy.

Am I missing something here?????

Not an actual post by the way, typical of several I've seen.

happyland · 19/07/2010 13:41

Definitely odd!

mumtoabeautifulbabyboy · 19/07/2010 13:41

Ha Ha, an extremely odd response.

I prefer Hannah!

toccatanfudge · 19/07/2010 13:43

yes very strange posts like that - I can understand it if they say "we've got Beth and Hannah on the listen but are there any others like it" - but not "help us pick between the 2 we already have"

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 19/07/2010 13:43

I'm not sure if you ABU or NBU, but have you ever thought of trying hypnotherapy

Ballpoint · 19/07/2010 13:44

Lucy

Ballpoint · 19/07/2010 13:44

Oh right.......sorry.

OgreRebel · 19/07/2010 13:51

It is odd isn't it?

OP: My dh loves blowjobs. Spit or swallow?

Response: Have you tried shagging the neighbour?

swanandduck · 19/07/2010 13:51

I prefer coffee actually Perpetually.

Audi.

blouseenthusiast · 19/07/2010 13:56

V true - there is a thread now where people are debating "Rufus", a name the OP had expressed no interest in at all...

mrsmindcontrol · 19/07/2010 14:46

Oh yes, this amuses me no end. I spent some time on there before DS3 arrived looking for inspiration and was amazed that every thread seemed to be full of the same people repeating the same lists of names they liked over and over and fucking over again regardless of what the OP was requesting. Along these lines;

OP- I like the name Betty. What do you think?

Response - my favourite names are Tarquin, Fartface, Monkey magic etc etc etc etc

WHAT?????

Yellowflowers · 19/07/2010 14:49

teehee this makes me laugh too. Cheeky buggers on that thread. I comment if I like something but try not to say nasty things.

swanandduck · 19/07/2010 14:49

I agree, some people just seem to have a favourite name and keep on and on bringing it up:

Q: We're trying to find a middle name to go with James. Any suggestions?

A: How about Natasha?

Q. Anyone got a nice nn for Elizabeth?

A: Natasha

Q: Looking for a nice 'old lady' type name. Any suggestions?

A: Natasha.

Bethannah!

lamplighter · 19/07/2010 14:53

I must admit I have found my self muttering;

'Read the fecking post before replying' several times to random remarks

But then again OP I had one and the wheel fell off

Chil1234 · 19/07/2010 14:53

I have no idea why anyone would post 'what do you think of (insert name here)?' Few people generally like the name you've picked for your baby - even if they're too polite to say so - and everyone has a name they like better. Pointless

melikalikimaka · 19/07/2010 14:57

I prefer Nicola!

Colliecross · 19/07/2010 14:58

Chil - I think the idea is this - you look for a thread mentioning the name of your own child, then you read the varied responses, then you post offended remarks back to the people who said they didn't like that name very much.
Works every time.

melikalikimaka · 19/07/2010 15:02

What about Samantha?

Colliecross · 19/07/2010 15:08

Henrietta

CapitalText · 19/07/2010 15:26

I think it's fine to offer name suggestions the OP hadn't mentioned Some of the time, they say they like the ideas and will add a name to their list. If the OP doesn't like the suggestions they don't have to use them, of course. I think most OPs are happy to receive all opinions and suggestions, the more the better.

I think it's good when people offer extra suggestions as well as only discussing what the OP said (whether on baby name thread or something else). It means they are trying to think around the topic, and help a bit more with additional ideas if they can

swanandduck · 19/07/2010 15:28

Yes, but if someone has stated that they have now narrowed it down to two names and are just doing a poll to see which one people like best, why throw in 4 or 5 more names and just confuse the issue?

OP posts:
CapitalText · 19/07/2010 15:29

I think the person responding to a thread like this was probably trying to be tactful and helpful. Not much point saying "both names are as bad as each other" without offering any other suggestions is there?

swanandduck · 19/07/2010 15:32

Well then just don't respond. Throwing in random names without any knowledge of the person's taste in names is pointless.
