to not open the parcel?

Right,

I ordered a little something for my 5 month old DS from lady 'X' who makes lovely things for babies. Soon after I ordered my item, X's DD developed chicken pox, so she delayed delivering the item. I received it today, but can't bring myself to open it because it is coming from an infected house and I fear DS will catch it. I really don't want to risk anything atm, as we are due to travel abroad next week, to see my family. I don't think I will be opening the parcel anytime soon. AIBU in doing so?

what do you expect the virus to live off while in a box? If there was anything in there it would be dead by now.

I think you are taking this to extremes.

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 11:45

YABU and a little bit precious.

Not sure whether unreasonable or overly protective and paranoid would be more accurate.

JaxTellersOldLady · 15/07/2010 11:47

Chicken pox is rife at the moment, so chances are your DS will already have come into contact with it. Doubt he could catch it from a box.

so YABU

2blessed2bstressed · 15/07/2010 11:48

FFS - chicken pox, not anthrax, and it won't leap out the box and assault your precious DS anyway, cos the virus wouldn't survive - if it was ever on whatever the "little something" was in the first place. YABVU

hippipotamiHasLost92lbs · 15/07/2010 11:48

Oh my giddy aunt!! Really?? An infected house? We are talking chicken pox, it cannot live in a box! Honestly, it is not actually that easy to catch chicken pox.

Ladyanonymous · 15/07/2010 11:49

Oh my dear lord. This is a wind up yes?

scurryfunge · 15/07/2010 11:49

this may help

TrillianAstra · 15/07/2010 11:51

Did you pay by leaving coins outside the door in a bowl of vinegar?

2blessed2bstressed · 15/07/2010 11:56

scurryfunge, that's hilarious!

Chil1234 · 15/07/2010 11:58

OP you have to calm down. Most viruses are transmitted through close physical contact and cannot live outside the body for any length of time. They will not survive a trip through Royal Mail.

Butterbur · 15/07/2010 12:01

I think YABU, but only a bit. Viruses normally live for only a few hours outside their host, more on soft surfaces than hard ones.

They're only little bundles of DNA or RNA, in a protein coat, so they don't live as such, as they cannot ingest food, or respire.

If it's worrying you, don't open the box until you get back.

kansasmum · 15/07/2010 12:46

Oh for God's sake - you are being TOTALLY ridiculous!! Your child won't catch chicken pox from a PARCEL!!!

Open the parcel and stop being so pathetic!!
Do you normally open your post or do you put on a Haz Mat outfit first? You don't know WHO has been handling your mail and what terrible lurgies they may be carrying!!!

Firawla · 15/07/2010 12:49

just wash the clothes first, it will be fine

TechLovingDad · 15/07/2010 12:49

Even if it was contagious via post, by the time the post office delivered it, it will have been long dead.

ShadeofViolet · 15/07/2010 12:57

YABP (You Are Being Precious)

and very silly!

swanandduck · 15/07/2010 13:04

If you were to follow that logic you wold never take DS outside the door because someone at the Supermarket's child might be unknowingly infectious or the woman on the bus might just have been ill. YABU. Open the parcel.

pippylongstockings · 15/07/2010 13:05

Crazy lady..............

My children had chicken pox last year - my sister visted with her children several times, our kids played with each other for hours on end - her children did NOT get chicken pox!

tethersend · 15/07/2010 13:05

YANBU.

Burn it.

SagacityNell · 15/07/2010 13:07

Its come via Royal Mail i am assuming? It will have taken about 3 weeks to get to you in any case.

biddysmama · 15/07/2010 14:24

Iklboo · 15/07/2010 14:27
