Is there any sort of pet a child with asthma can have?

Apart from a goldfish of course.

My dd has quite severe allergic asthma which flares up really badly on contact with dogs and cats.

She's an only child though, who adores animals, and I can't help but wish there was some kind of lovable pet we could get her.

We've got a fish. Not that cuddly!

What do they look like by the way?

What about a tortoise?

imaginaryfriend · 08/04/2007 22:54

I guess we could superglue some fun fur to a tortoise's shell?

Sorry, I'm being flippant too now. It's got to be cuddly in some way and it's also got to be suitable to live in a flat.

funny you should mention that my imaginary friend.....

btw tortises are really expensive now because of hte restrictions on importing them, so they have to be bred over here

200 quid or so i believe

ash6605 · 08/04/2007 22:58

i can't do a link but google bichon frise they are lap dogs, similar to a poodle but so much cuter

Hilllary · 08/04/2007 22:59

lou33 · 08/04/2007 23:00

here

imaginaryfriend · 08/04/2007 23:01

Those little fluffy things are really hyper-allergenic?

Dd would be falling over herself in delight if she had one of those ...

She's tried really hard to bond with her fish.

ash6605 · 08/04/2007 23:05

when we were looking into getting a pet we went on a site called petfinder or whichpet-something like that and it asked you loads of questions about your lifestyle, allergies etc.it came up with a bichon for us even with asthmatic kids,.the kids LOVE them, vise versa they are very friendly dogs.

lou33 · 08/04/2007 23:05

i really really expected that to be the bat....

ash6605 · 08/04/2007 23:08

"imaginaryfriend there is not much to choose from tbh all cuddly animals have fur"

I know hillary is sounding a bit narky but she's got a point

imaginaryfriend · 08/04/2007 23:10

And I know all about the bat just in case anyone is thinking of suggesting it.

OP posts:
lou33 · 08/04/2007 23:11

bugger.....

imaginaryfriend · 08/04/2007 23:11

pointydog, I wanted to find something with fur that wouldn't be too awful for a child with allergies.

Hamster is the current option but I didn't know if even that small amount of fur would be a no-no.

OP posts:
lou33 · 08/04/2007 23:13

this?

pointydog · 08/04/2007 23:13

hamsters are pretty boring 'cause they sleep all day and they move so darn quickly you can't really cuddle them at all.

lou33 · 08/04/2007 23:13

lol
