Surprise dairy & egg free finds - join me in making a list?

Hi -

I'm new to the whole allergy thing (DS is 15 months old & allergic to milk & eggs). As he's getting older I'm starting to appreciate how limiting it is and how lovely it is when he can have an off-the-shelf item that everyone else is having. So, I thought I would start a thread where we could list surprise finds we've came across (or in my case, that MN have pointed me towards!).

My (very short) list:

Anyone like to share their finds?

Hi everyone.
I've been pointed in the direction of this thread. My GP, HV & myself think DD2 10.5 months is milk & dairy intolerant, so currently trialling going without.
She has been prescribed SMA LF and have to change to dairy-free products. If still not happy then everything the lactose & any other milk proteins have to go too as we're currently not sure which or if she is intolerant to all things milk/dairy related. Also sorry if I am not making sense I've got a horrendous head cold so everything seems like mush at the moment and found out she needs to go milk/dairy-free as possible so all quite over-whelming what I need to change. Iykwim.

So this thread is a great start. Thanks Smile

Hubby is DF and I love the look on his face when we find something he didnt think he could have but he can!! Doughnuts all round at mine!!

I know the asda cheapest frozen garlic bread is DF, as well as the frozen slices (own brand not cheapest) but everything else seems to have it

if you have lactose intolerance, I can recommend the Lactofree cheese- for melting or cooking not for eating (cheese shouldnt bounce!) and the cream cheese too.

For baking I use Pure Sunflower spread. They made it for baking (they do olive and soya too I think) and my lot think that my cakes are better than before.

I think all wraps and pittas are DF and EF too, and I agree with the New York Bagels too, oh and im not sure my hubby could live without the justrol pain au chocolat. if we stay with my ILs we always take them. They totally havent got this dairy free thing down yet

If you can have soya, Alpro Soya custard is fantastic- tastes like posh fresh stuff (according the ILs who get it when they come to us because they dont get a choice!!) and Swedish Glace is yummy- they are bringing out a cheesecake ive heard on the grapevine too!

Oh and lastly, Hotel Chocolat- all their dark choc is dairy free, not the truffles and stuff, but the slabs are, hubbys fave is the fruit and nut one.

littleladyindoors · 14/11/2012 14:01

forgot to add, Morrisons have recently changed the recipe on a lot of their bakery products where they used to be DF but not any more- pittas for example, and muffins

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 14/11/2012 14:06

Thanks. Don't know what I would do without MN at times!

Is there any custard powder that is dairy free?

HV & GP think DD2 is intolerant/allergic to both parts of milk & dairy (the lactose & proteins) so does that include no soya stuff? feel completely lost about all this.

Maz007 · 14/11/2012 15:19

Just a quick one this fact sheet from the lovely anaphylaxis campaign will probably answer lots of your questions.

And birds custard powder is milk / dairy free so you can make it up with whatever you substitute for milk. Kara coconut milk is favourite at ours.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/11/2012 15:25

Birds custard powder is dairy free, in the big drum not the sachets, you could make it up with Kara milk. Karas meant to be good but I dont know if babies can have it.

Soyas fine there is no lactose or milk protein at all. It means she cant have lactose free cheese though.

I'm lactose more than protein so I get to have cheese now. There are vegan cheeses and powders to sprinkle on food but they have way too much salt for a baby.

It's not that bad being dairy free. It's harder for you keeping her that way when people say stupid things like "if you have a little bit every day you'll get used to it"

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/11/2012 15:27

Aldi do a dairy free spread too, I think it's called pure. Oh dear that's not much use is it?

I'll have a look on Sunday.

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 14/11/2012 20:06

Thanks Fluffy.

I've been to Tesco quickly and brought some Vitalite dairy free butter, Oatlys (sp?) small cartons of milk to pour over cereal & tub of Birds custard powder. Hard to know what to get especially as she is only 10.5 months old. An going to have a good read of this thread in a bit and make notes. Smile

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 15/11/2012 08:41

Hi,

Where can I buy the Kara coconut milk? Also is it chilled or long life? If long life how long once carton opened does it have to be used?

Thanks

seabuckthorn · 15/11/2012 09:14

DS has CMPA I can't wait to give him some of these treats.
I'm looking for a cheese substitute. Is there anything at all? We can do soya in small quantities.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/11/2012 09:37

I think tescos has kara, it might be in the special food aisle. I think it's longlife. It's not cheap so I get Aldi soya.

Vegan websites will do cheeses and the supermarkets usually do a cheddar or parmesan cheese flavour powder but the salt content is really high, I'd check with the gp before giving a child any of them really.

Some of them are basically salt and soya.

Maz007 · 15/11/2012 09:39

These people make a really quite nice range of vegan cheese but it might be a bit salty for little people and does have nuts. Their weird liquid cheese is supposed to make delicious pizza.

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 15/11/2012 10:37

Thanks Fluffy So DD2 can have soya products as they don't contain the lactose & milk protein is that right?

Also is Tesco's free from milk any good?

OHforDUCKScake · 15/11/2012 10:59

Tesco value mince pies are milk and egg (and I think soya) free. And they taste AMAZING.

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 15/11/2012 11:06

Ooo will be buying some of them then Smile

Also I see Jus-Rol puff, croissant is dairy free but does anyone know if the short rust pastry is?

Thanks

littleladyindoors · 15/11/2012 16:27

all the just rol are dairy free even the filo- I was surprised but I am pretty sure of it.

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 15/11/2012 19:27

Got some Kara coconut milk in Tesco's today Smile

Thanks for the info on the pastry as both DD's love my chicken pie and I use it for Jam tarts and mince pies etc.

OHforDUCKScake · 16/11/2012 12:32

Tesco's value fruit loaf (sorreb basically) milk, egg and soya free.

And it tastes GOOD. Grin
