Surprise dairy & egg free finds - join me in making a list?

Hi -

I'm new to the whole allergy thing (DS is 15 months old & allergic to milk & eggs). As he's getting older I'm starting to appreciate how limiting it is and how lovely it is when he can have an off-the-shelf item that everyone else is having. So, I thought I would start a thread where we could list surprise finds we've came across (or in my case, that MN have pointed me towards!).

My (very short) list:

Anyone like to share their finds?

Mattesons Smoked pork sausage is dairy, soya, egg & wheat free! Couldn't believe it when my friend said, so I've just checked their website & all their products (except the turkey rashers) are dairy, egg & soya free!

Puddles - do you have a 'favourite' cocoa for your Brownie recipe? I'm in a 'can't be arsed baking' phase - but that looks very simple, very 'mess free' and potentially very yummy :)

GranoVita - they do quite a few vegan things, their Mayonaise & Garlic Mayonaise are really good Grin Their 'soyage' (yogurt type thing) much much less so - but maybe OK for kids as a pudding if they aren't comparing it to yogurt?

(Available at Tesco (online at least) and Ocado (online at least))

Another find today!

You know supermarkets have a 'party food section' during christmas time? Tesco's have little sausage rolls which are milk, egg and soya free!

OHforDUCKScake · 01/10/2012 13:31

*in the frozen section.

Just back from Lidl and in their new Christmas display they have dark chocolate rings with sprinkles which are dairy free (contain soy) and look lovely and festive!

I have just found a great yoghurt that is dairy, soya and egg free!

Co Yo is coconut milk yoghurt. It is really lovely though and wished I had found it when I was breast feeding as I really missed yoghurt. It's so yummy and creamy. I have only managed to get hold of the plain one, but you can mix it up with fruit purees. I emailed them earlier to ask about calcium, and they are planning on doing an enriched one in the New Year. I find calcium intake such a worry.

I suppose a lot of folk are okay with soya, but we weren't. And this yoghurt actually tastes great and seems really pure, ingredient wise. I know coconut may not be to everyone's taste, and not always mine (eg Bounty's? - yuk lol). But this is so yummy!

Thought I'd share! Hopefully the more popular/sought after it becomes, the easier it'll be to get, and cheaper hopefully too.

Just wanted to thank abigboydidit for the Lidl dark chocolate rings info, we went to Lidl today and bought two packs. Will keep them for Christmas and they will love them.

For anyone interested they were a pound something and they look like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&sa=X&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=oUETNr0OAacP3M:&imgrefurl=www.sweetgreetingsshildon.co.uk/chocolate-heaven/milk-chocolate-jazzies/prod_78.html&docid=SaoSuyxUPYdLwM&imgurl=www.sweetgreetingsshildon.co.uk/images/uploads/chocolate-covered/milk-chocolate-jazzies.JPG&w=480&h=359&ei=FEKEUNOMDueN0AWPm4CIBQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=96&vpy=152&dur=3627&hovh=194&hovw=260&tx=41&ty=215&sig=109128702486392266285&page=1&tbnh=140&tbnw=172&start=0&ndsp=10&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:69&biw=1024&bih=511" rel="nofollow noindex" target="_blank">jazzies but bigger and dark chocolate.

Meant to add that Aldi have a chocolate reindeer that comes in milk or dark chocolate (probably you all already know this!) <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&sa=X&biw=1024&bih=511&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=mrSLSQB2FB0ElM:&imgrefurl=www.playpennies.com/tag/aldi&docid=_lHPRLy_jBAAuM&imgurl=www.playpennies.com/writer/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Aldi-4-140x140.jpg&w=140&h=140&ei=QkOEUIulJ-eK0AWmtIDoAw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=318&vpy=296&dur=4201&hovh=112&hovw=112&tx=66&ty=129&sig=109128702486392266285&page=1&tbnh=112&tbnw=112&start=0&ndsp=9&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0,i:84" rel="nofollow noindex" target="_blank">here Its really nice chocolate but you just have to be careful to pick up the dark one instead of the milk one, the foil is a slightly different colour.

Sainsburys own fruit loaf is also dairy & egg free. As are M& S iced fruit buns.

Glad the rings were a good tip off Allegra. Am definitely heading to Aldi in search of reindeer next! DS (17 months) had the basics Sainsburys garlic bread last night (from freezer section - thanks trixymalixy) & "nom nom"-ed the entire time he was eating it. Too cute!

Ooh, will definitely look out for the iced buns, thanks!

Aww, so glad he enjoyed the garlic bread Grin.

It's quite sad how excited I get about finding something new my kids can eat.

I saw the jazzies things in Aldi, but I think I discounted them because they had a may contain nuts warning. I normally don't take any notice of may contains, but chocolate seems to be pretty bad for contamination.

If anyone wants to bake dairy/soy free, and I'll yell this from the rooftops as even my dietician didn't know until I told her - BLOCK STORK margarine like your Granny used to bake with. It's made of vegetable oil.

Birds eye vegetable fingers. In the frozen section.

ASDA now has a DF/SF Christmas pudding. I can't see a nut warning on it anywhere either. Not even a 'made in a factory that also handles nuts' warning.

I got one for DS3 today!!

Heinz mini meals tins - but only the green labelled tomato & veggie pasta shells and the orange labelled barbecue beans & sausages.

ASDA great stuff mini tins - but only the hot dogs and the VEGETABLE ravioli (not the beef one).

Good for a little one if the rest of the family are eating something they can't have, or for lunches.

Warburton's GF/Wheat free bread is ££, (£2.48 a bloody half loaf) BUT is also CMP & soy free. I separate it into sandwich bags and freeze it in 2-slice packs, so it doesn't go off, and I've always got 2 slices handy.

I can't buy 'may contain'.

Report
AbsintheIsAddictive · 02/11/2012 15:43

I know it doesn't help if you can't have 'may contain' things, but B&M Stores are doing individual, decorated Christmas gingerbread men that are egg and dairy free, though it does have the 'may contain' disclaimer on them. They are 2 for £1.50. I've bought them for the stockings, it will be a treat, they usually have egg in them.

Tesco's own brand garlic bread slices are dairy/egg free. In freezer section - pack of 10 or maybe 12. Oddly the garlic baguette in the same range does contain dairy..
