Surprise dairy & egg free finds - join me in making a list?

Hi -

I'm new to the whole allergy thing (DS is 15 months old & allergic to milk & eggs). As he's getting older I'm starting to appreciate how limiting it is and how lovely it is when he can have an off-the-shelf item that everyone else is having. So, I thought I would start a thread where we could list surprise finds we've came across (or in my case, that MN have pointed me towards!).

My (very short) list:

Anyone like to share their finds?

tesco southern fried chicken straws ( egg and milk free).

Walkers crisps are mostly milk free (except cheese and onion and salt and vinegar).
Most of the sunbites are milk free too.

Walkers salt and Vinegar crisps....I think are now dairy free again!! They were dairy free, then they changed the recipe to include skimmed milk, which caused a major problem for us and I phoned Walkers about it. Now several years later the milk seems to have disappeared again.

Ooh, I shall have to check salt and vinegar some time, I thought they had lactose in.

Re Walkers salt and vinegar I'm referring to the six bag multi packs with small snack sized green packets. I saw yesterday that a bigger Walkers extra crunch packet did have dairy in it still Confused

What does the packaging of the Co-op doughnuts look like? What I am looking for? Are they in a in-store bakery section, you know with the cooked in house fresh bread/cakes or in the pre-packaged bread/cake section?

Do they say on them the ingredients? I'd be really bothered about giving a custard doughnut unless I was sure because I'd expect it to have both eggs and milk so it would be a bit of a double whammy if I bought the wrong ones!

tons of stuff out there is. If you are new to the restricted diet stuff, go over to the Mumsnet Bloggers section and you'll find loads of blogs by parents dealing with all this and you'll never be alone again!

The Whole Earth Dark Chocolate spread has had a change of ingredients and a change of jar shape and label design. It now lists skimmed milk powder, see here

I have a jar and a half left of the old type and the old ingredients are: Sugar, Vegetable oil and fat, low fat cocoa powder (30%), emulsifier, soya lecithin, vanilla extract.
It says may contain traces of milk and nuts.

Gutted, will have to find a new brand to buy instead.

Going back to the pom bear thing, I definitely definitely found a dairy free packet in Holland and Barratt this week. I stared at the ingredients for ages, in case I was going mad, but definitely dairy free. It was a single pack though, not a multi pack, though I have found dairy free multi packs occasionally in the past.

Just thought I'd share Grin

Me too! I looked in a health food shop and in tesco. Both pom bears were milk (whey) free.

However, look online at any shop and check the ingredients and they clearly state they have milk in.

So, are the milky packets on their way in or on their way out....?

theblackcompany the co-op doughnuts are in the fresh bakery section in a white paper bag folded over with a sticker that gives the ingredients. I think it just lists the allergens as gluten, wheat and soya.

Ah sorry, that was just from memory. We ignore "may contains". DS who is milk allergic was fine with them.
