Hayfever already?

DS has had runny nose (clear not green) for a few days, today very red eyes along bottom lid and black eyes under and eyelids.

This is his usual hayfever symptoms - is it too early??

Not too early for tree pollen - it starts in March. But I think it only lasts a few weeks, so it may ease up then if that's the only thing he reacts to.

toastedteacake · 04/03/2011 21:50

Yew tree pollen?

My DS suffered terribly until we moved house. It triggered hay fever symptoms for the rest of the season.

Beamur · 04/03/2011 21:55

Not too early for tree pollen.
I'm sneezy and itchy at the moment and this is incredibly early for me, I'm also thinking mould spores might be an issue as our bathroom is a bit grotty at the moment!

mumbar · 04/03/2011 22:05

Thanks, He's not too bad atm. He has also been scratching his arms and legs and tummy. There is no rash but this again is usually a sign theres some kind of histamine reaction occuring in him.

He has hayfever early and late in the season at its worst but suffers for most of the summer. I don't remember it being this early last year (late march/early april?)

Going to hold out but think it may be time to start the cetirizine and ensure the chlorphenamine is stocked up. Sad

I've been sneezing and getting itchy eyes for a week or two as well - it's definitely tree pollen, not sure which one here, but in Japan (where I first developed the allergy) it was mainly cypress and cedar pollen at this time of year. Unfortunatly you don't have to be anywhere close to the trees to be affected - it blows in on the winds. This time of year is the peak for me - I don't seem to be as allergic to the summer pollens.

Mspontipine · 07/03/2011 23:32

I've been told it's the bl**dy hazel catkins - me too :(

TheSmallPrint · 08/03/2011 13:03

This is wierd as I have been getting pre hay fever symptoms (really dry nose that feels like it is full of dry bogies Grin)for the last week and thinking they are at least 6-8 weeks early. I thought I was going mad but now it appears I am not.

FellatioNelson · 08/03/2011 13:21

Yes! It never occurred to me that that was what it was! I have had one of those irritating drippy noses that blowing doesn't help for the last few days and today my eyes are really itchy. Also have lots of very dry crusty skin up my nose too!!!!Hmm (TMI)

FellatioNelson · 08/03/2011 13:24

That's funny you should say yew tree pollen, toasted because we have a yew tree in our front garden and the other day when it was raining it looked like the branches were letting off puffs of steam or smoke. Confused I realise what it was now. Smile

Lulie110 · 08/03/2011 13:26

Er, me too (snap to last 2 posts). I think spring has categorically sprung, and the catkins are dropping their pollen all over the shop. As well as hayfever symptoms, my skin also very itchy - NEVER noticed that before! Also, catkin pollen stains, never noticed that before either. Hmmm. Do you think it's going to be a bad season this year then?

TheSmallPrint · 08/03/2011 13:27

Lulie maybe because it started early it will just be over quicker?

medicalmayhem · 08/03/2011 14:13

yeah another one starting to sneeze and have itchy face/eyes,

SmashingNarcissistsMirrors · 08/03/2011 15:21

another thing it's worth looking out for if you have tree pollen allergy is pollen fruit syndrome. this gives you an allergic reaction (sore lips / itchy throat) when you eat certain fruits depending on tree pollen you are allergic to.

for me it's cherries, apples, plums, peaches and hazelnuts all associated with birch tree allergy. it's fine if they are cooked as this breaks down the allergenic protein.

stealthsquiggle · 08/03/2011 17:03

It's definitely not too early, but I have yet to have any symptoms, which is unusual. Normally I would expect to be waking up @4am with itchy sore throat by now....

BlessedAssurance · 08/03/2011 17:06

Definitely not too early, a few weeks ago my eyes started buring and i thought it was because i spend a lot of time on the computer,Mning, not, but realised its that time of the year again,my eyes just feel like i have a stick in them,

kittyspolitti · 08/03/2011 17:24

Another itchy one here. I kept waking up last night with the itchiest eyes and the skin around my nose is itchy as well. Just annoyingly itchy.
I love spring but every year I forget about tree pollen you'd think I'd remember after 35 years of itchiness, but no.

PercyPigPie · 08/03/2011 17:36

Itchy here too. I am now at my worst at this time of year, whilst it used to be the summer that really caused problems for me.

PercyPigPie · 08/03/2011 17:36

How weird Kittyspolitti - I forget too. Every. Single. Year.

jafina · 08/03/2011 18:29

I went to an allergy specialist last year and he recommended starting the nasal spray (I use Nasonex,) 2 wks before start of season. Didn't really work this year as season has started early!

I did a skin prick test and found out that not only am I allergic to birch which I knew about I am also severely allergic to hazel and alder. I felt worse a couple of weeks ago and now keep forgetting the nasal spray so perhaps the hazel and alder are finished. I think we have birch to come. and I have the oral allergies as well, so annoying. Bean sprouts are my worst!

The nasal spray is by far the best for me, much better than the oral stuff.

Smadarama · 08/03/2011 18:32

Yes it's definitely started - I've been having slight symptoms for a couple of weeks but they've really kicked in this week. I hate that feeling of fatigue that I get along with the more obvious symptoms. I too forget every year. I didn't get hayfever until I was in my late-twenties - I feel really sorry for children suffering from it.

generalhaig · 08/03/2011 19:28

god I feel stupid! I thought ds was going down with a cold but of course, it's hayfever - his seems to start earlier every year :(

mumbar · 08/03/2011 20:08

Lulie110 My DS seems to itch all over, well hes constantly scratching but think he's too young to really understand why.

DS symptoms have been building for a few weeks too. I thought it was a cold but realised there was no 'bad' point and it was just sniffing. His eyes are the give away. They go black underneath and on the lids. He then gets 'puffiness' on the top of his cheekbones when outside and sometimes rubs them.

I started his cetirizine last night (as this thread seems to be indicating it is the hayfever starting!) so hopefully in a few days it will be in his system.

I find DS becomes teary at the silliest things, he abviously generally just feels fatigues and unwell.

Last year he had sudden swelling and hives, very itchy swollen throat a few times - got epi-pens now but hope I can get through a summer without them??

blesseedassurance I get the burning tired utchy eyes. I thought it was computer/tv/ tireness. I realised last yer its hayfever. I get it late April/ may time only.

OP posts:
RubberDuck · 08/03/2011 20:10

I thought I had hayfever too as mine always started this time of year.

Eventually I got allergy testing as my hayfever season got longer and longer and it turned out I didn't have any pollen allergies - but did have a dust mite allergy. Apparently dust mites start to breed this time of year and get more populous so it can be confused for hayfever.

Is another possibility maybe?

sofaaddict · 08/03/2011 20:43

SmashingNarcissistsMirrors thanks for the link - I suffer terribly from Hayfever every year and have never thought to link it to the fact that certain fruit and vegetables make my lips itch and me want to scratch out my throat!! Confused So interesting! I had been moaning to myself about this early start to the hayfever season, nice to have others to moan with! It's normally April for me, but I have had definite sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose etc. for the last couple of weeks. Really really really hope that means it will tail off early too. It can be so miserable having hayfever. You're so pleased to see spring and some sunshine and then ACHOOOO - you want to hibernate indoors again!!
