DS has had runny nose (clear not green) for a few days, today very red eyes along bottom lid and black eyes under and eyelids.

This is his usual hayfever symptoms - is it too early??

hi everyone am new to the board, ive been suffering for the past couple of weeks also, itchy, burning sore eyes, sneezing, dried out nasal passages, bunged up ears ,lightheadness an headaches, i was getting a bit worried that i was getting another sinus infection, i was even ready to take a trip to the opticians coz my eyesight seemed hazy an my eyes were so sore, am hoping that it is only the hayfever an that the season has started early, i dont usually start with my hayfever symptoms till april, does anyone else on here experience any of my above symptoms especially the foggy/lightheadness. thanks :)

exexpat · 09/03/2011 13:36

Daisie - I tend to feel rather as if my head is stuffed with cotton wool when my hay fever is bad and the antihistamines haven't kicked in. Have you tried taking anything for it yet? If it doesn't improve with whatever you usually use for hay fever, then maybe you should ask a doctor.

daisiedoo · 09/03/2011 13:51

hi exexpat my head does feel a bit like its stuffed with cotton wool also, ive been using flixonase nasal spray since november, i had a terrible sinus infection at the time an my doctor suggested i continue with it, it helped for a few weeks, but i know seem to be more congested i stopped using it a week ago because of the rebound congestion,my doctor is now going to refer me to e.n.t, i also use piriton but it only helps a little.

maristella · 09/03/2011 14:30

I've had hay fever symptoms as early as Feb before.

Most of my problems are in my eyes, and I was told that it was so bad I would never be allowed contact lenses. However last year I took Cetrizine religiously and was allowed contacts. Ironically the contacts help prevent allergens from affecting my eyes. I also get the itchy throat and feel a bit sniffly from time to time.

I get the anti histamines from the GP as I'm on a low income, and I get it in liquid form so I can slightly reduce the dose if symptoms are well managed.

BeckleinDisguise · 09/03/2011 14:35

I don't generally get hayfever but this is the third year in a row I've had painful sinuses at this time of year. I get varying degrees of stuffyness day by day along with aching face, migrane type headaches, sensitivity to light/sound and general fatigue and it lasts for around 4-6 weeks. Its only this year I've noticed the pattern and wondered if it could be to do with tree pollen? I have been taking Sudafed when its bad and paracetamol when its bearable but wonder if an antihisthamine would do better?

daisiedoo · 09/03/2011 14:52

hi beckleindisguise, ur symptoms seem similar to mine, ive suffered for many yrs an my doctor said that these symptoms are all hayfever related, my eyes get so light sensitive along with crushing migranes and also a burning pumping feeling in my temples and one sided sore throat, i myself thought it was reacurring sinusitis, u probably would be best trying an anthistamine to see if it helps, piriton seems to take the edge of it all but doesnt clear it completely for me.

supersewer · 09/03/2011 16:20

Fexofenadine doesn't work that we ll for me, bit worrying really as I have oral allergy too and don.t want to resort to the epipen

mumbar · 09/03/2011 16:32

Not too early for tree pollen hayfever - I get this badly and I am starting to sneeze and have scratchy eyes. April tends to be bad for me (allergic to Birch pollen)

thinkingaboutschools · 09/03/2011 19:36

This is an interesting discussion - I take fexofenadine (daisiedoo it is an antihistamine) also have eyedrops and flixonase. Fexofenadine is the only antihistamine I have found that works for me. Has anyone had swollen eyes - I find that if I am not careful - i.e. rub them they completely swell up and close. I just wondered if anyone had any tips re this as it is horrible (and makes my face look completely distorted!!)

mejon · 09/03/2011 21:04

My eyes have been hellishly itchy for a couple of weeks - now I know why. I thought it was due to suffering sleep deprevation with newborn DD2 but I can now blame the catkins in the garden hedge!

I think I will try fexofenadine, is it non drowsy thinkingaboutschools ? I tend to find flixonase bunts me up more after a few weeks, but it is quite good for a short while, I get puffy eyes when I wake up but not swollen I tend to get tiny water filled blisters on my inner lids due to all the rubbing, these are annoying I have to use an earbud soaked in hot water to burst them, does anyone get really bad earache that comes an goes during there hay fever.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 09/03/2011 21:16

DS2 had his dermatology appt today, his skin is okish because this time of year is not too bad for him. Specialist nurse said a lot of her patients had been really suffering because of the Catkins. DS is allergic to grass and tree pollen so got a few weeks grace yet.

Pixie I didnt know DD was in hosptial. How is she?

Beamur · 09/03/2011 21:22

I find wearing contacts helps me have more discipline to not rub my eyes.
Spoke to my GP today and he was recommending Neoclarityn - which I think is Lotoradine.
Another issue with apples is the stuff the skin gets treated/coated with - washing/peeling helps - not the same as the oral allergy, but the waxy coating for apples is known to irritate some people, especially those with latex allergies.

gingercurl · 09/03/2011 21:25

Ah! This explains my itchy eyes! Have been suffering with them for a about 10 days now and wondered why. Doh! For some reason, my reactions to pollen always catch me unawares when they start in late winter/early spring. I never seem to learn. Must get antihistamines.

daisiedoo · 09/03/2011 21:34

My 4yr old little girl has real bad eczema on her arms that won't go, she also for the past 2 weeks has has real bad sticky watery eyes an runny nose, her eyes look so heavy, but she's not unwell, am starting to think is she also developing hay fever ,

Nose definitely telling me that the catkins are out - have felt snotty/coldy and phlegmy/throaty but without the 'starts of a cold' thing. I am also wheezing - tree pollen affects my chest more than causing any other hayfever symptom. Fun fun fun...!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 09/03/2011 23:09

Im ok. Not keen on this time of year TBH but plodding along. 22 weeks! I am jealous, no more babies for me Sad. I know its hard but do make sure you rest when you can.
