Hello and welcome. I’m glad you’ve found your way here. We are a bunch of people who are trying to give up and keep off alcohol. No judgement, just honest support and kindness.
The original thread was started by @drybird2020 in 2020 and we have plenty of veterans and newer members who can offer advice and signposting. You are welcome here, whether you post several times a day, once or twice and then never again, or if you only just come to read but have no intention of ever posting.
Whatever your stage on the AF journey, and whatever you’re going through, someone here will have gone through it too. Don’t be shy about posting, we love to celebrate your successes of whatever shape and size - and will support you when things get challenging. We get it, we've been there too.
All we ask is that you’re genuinely trying to abstain. We don't encourage moderation-only here, as it can be triggering for some to read. If you’re looking to moderate your drinking rather than quitting it altogether then MN has another long-running and very active moderation/abstaining thread that’s always near the top on the alcohol support board. Lots of fine support there from those worthy people too. Keep trying. Sobriety may not be easy - but I guarantee you that it is worth it.
I started trying to give up drink in 2018, succeeded (mostly) in 2019 but had a few “wobbles”, one of which led me here in April 2023. I still struggle sometimes but the posters on this thread have been an absolute godsend of wisdom, support and encouragement, along with my dog - known here as Sid (not his real name), and they keep me going. I hope you find strength and comfort here too. This thread and its wonderful posters has been a lifesaver to many, and have certainly seen me through many good and not-so-good days.
These books were particularly helpful to me and I still go back to them from time to time: The Sober Diaries by Clare Pooley (Amazon - Sober Diaries) and The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray (Amazon - Unexpected Joy). Others have found This Naked Mind by Annie Grace (Amazon - This Naked Mind) helpful. There are Apps that help track your AF journey, including Reframe and the ones I use, I Am Sober and TryDry. Podcasts can also be helpful. I have found One for the Road by Sober Dave to be a good listen. But different things work for different people. Feel free to post and ask. There is solidarity, wisdom and support here. This is a safe space where your voice will be heard, understood and valued.
Warmer weather is coming. Keep an eye out for that first daffodil waving in the breeze, and make yourself at home. It's going to be alright. x

Yep. I'm always awake before 8am.. closer to 7ish really. Nice though - means I have the whole day - and I like that now I'm used to it.

Sorry you've had a tough week @PhantomOfAllKnowledge. I used to love going into Past Times. What a great find! I'm feeling real pangs of nostalgia at the moment for the way things were 20-25 years ago in terms of clothes, shops, things. Had a bit of an online shop browse yesterday of some vintage places and just couldn't scratch the itch. Need to physically see the items so maybe I need to go on a proper trip out. Not today though, not with this rain.

ElizabethBennetsFineEyes · 15/02/2026 11:01

Hi all. Completed Dry Jan apart from one very wet Saturday night but since last weekend have realised that I struggle to moderate. Also I'm not used it to. I had 2 glasses on Wed and felt awful until Friday! Absolutely not worth it, I didnt even really enjoy the feeling. Much prefer feeling in control of myself now. So I haven't had any wine or anything else since Wed, which is am achievement for me with Valentines Day etc. Tried to go for a day out yesterday but all the roads to the place we were going were closed! And now this rain today, crazy. Watching the Winter Olympics and DS is challenging me to play sonic! Absolutely done with wine.

Afternoon shipmates
With reference to bag chat I do have a mulberry Alexa. Bought it second hand about 8 years ago and she’s still going strong.
@FiloPasty good shout on the Trydry mission I’d forgotten valentines was one!
According to Trydry I’ve saved about £350 so far from not drinking which might indicate the amount I was guzzling. The AF drinks are also quite expensive but I don’t consume anywhere near the volume I did of the alcoholic versions.
Ive been looking at cancelling various subscriptions and things I don’t really use over the last few days. That’s £60 a month back in my pocket so far which is nice. I do love a decent splurge but think I can be terribly wasteful so trying to be much more thoughtful about what brings me joy in life! My NYT puzzle subscription at 2.99 per month is worth every penny for example!
It’s a grim old day here but I’ve managed to get out before the rain started with the dog.
I have also resigned myself to my need to wear my glasses more so am collecting my new pair next week-another bit of self care!

WendyWagon · 15/02/2026 18:35

Evening all.
Drinking lovely blood orange juice. A bit sharp this time of year.

The DS is home now until he moves in a fortnight. I've managed get him a special saute pan as he's been hinting re my James martin.
How I'll get the bag in without his knowledge I don't know!

Happy Sid anniversary @REP22

eekwhatnow · 15/02/2026 20:41

Just about to go to bed feeling very content. I exercised with friends both days this weekend and got a real buzz off both. Also had some lovely individual quality time with each of my DC and DH just chatting.

Otherwise finished my book so get to start a new one, and did loads of housework and sorting which was really satisfying. Might have been a perfect weekend!

Sleep well shipmates.

TheMentalMentalLoad · 15/02/2026 22:02

Sounds like a great weekend @eekwhatnow

i had my first social event since stopping booze yesterday and it was so easy to not drink. It would have also been easy to leave the car and have some wine etc but I would have hated today. I’m so glad I stuck to 0%.

Day 52 tomorrow and I have day 100 in my sights.

endlesswashing · 15/02/2026 22:11

I'm on a train on my way back from the O2. I went with a friend who I would normally drink with. Went for a bite to eat and drink in pub first but I stuck with AF drinks. Told her I was taking a break from the booze and she kept AF too. She's much more of a take it or leave it personality than me. Feeling quite pleased with myself knowing I'll start the week fresh. Happy to have had a fun afternoon and evening with a lovely friend, not something I do often enough. Was good for the soul. Also made it to 5 weeks.

WhatMaggieDid · 15/02/2026 23:48

End of day 40 for me!

eekwhatnow · 16/02/2026 07:24

Ahhh so pleased for you @TheMentalMentalLoad sounds like a total success.

And for you too @endlesswashing. Sounds like one of those things that can feel a bit daunting beforehand and then so satisfying when it works out well.

WendyWagon · 16/02/2026 09:26

Morning all.
My day of rest today.
I cook weekends but find it very tiring.
I have the new woman and home magazine so hope for some peace with no visitors.

My friend has told me she is moving up to Yorkshire and I think it's the right thing to do.
It's three years since my great friend her husband died and she's been waiting to make a decision. She's a very close friend but I know the area isn't right for her in her dottage.
My mum's family came from Yorkshire so I'm very happy to visit!

I'm a stubborn woman so as soon as someone said you'll never be sober it infuriated me.
Accept what you cannot change and change what you can and need to do so.
Sobriety is a gift to you from deep within.

Lavrander · 16/02/2026 09:33

Morning all
Congratulations on all the successes! It's great to realise we can still socialise and have fun without the need for drink. I was listening to 'what's up doc' at the weekend - their episode on booze and a bit disappointed they didn't explore this. Just accepted that there are occasions where alcohol = fun rather than asking whether it would have been fun without. Annoying.

Feel like I've been hit by a bus today. Not sure why. Hope am not coming down with something. Also feeling all meh - skin is dry and I have perioral dermatitis so I can't put anything moisturising on it so I'm a blotchy mess. And the weather is making my hair frizzy. I am distinctly lacking in glow. Ho hum.

HorrorFan81 · 16/02/2026 12:18

I did it! One year sober 💖🥳

Honestly its the best thing I have ever done and can't believe how much happier I am

Unfortunately I am feeling pretty rough after a really intense work trip last week but I am very aware of how much worse I would feel had I been drinking whilst there 😅

endlesswashing · 16/02/2026 12:31

@HorrorFan81 that really is fantastic! Congratulations.

FiloPasty · 16/02/2026 12:36

That’s amazing @HorrorFan81 huge congratulations what an achievement!

Onewildandpreciouslife · 16/02/2026 12:54

Amazing work @HorrorFan81 !! Many congratulations 🎉

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 16/02/2026 13:14

Yay! Well done @HorrorFan81 ! You deserve to feel hugely proud.

@Lavrander My skin is terrible at the moment - I think it's the cold weather - it's completely dried out. My lovely sister has just sent me a moisturising serum she swears by - she had several she'd bought on offer, so will see if that helps. My husband took a photo of me at the weekend by a landmark in bright sunshine and I was horrified by how wrinkly I looked 😆

WendyWagon · 16/02/2026 13:25

Congratulations @HorrorFan81

taylorean · 16/02/2026 16:00

Well done @HorrorFan81 !

Adsy1988 · 16/02/2026 16:11

TwoNicePuppies · 16/02/2026 16:39

Huge congratulations @HorrorFan81 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

ShyMaryEllen · 16/02/2026 17:07

That's great news, @HorrorFan81. You are counting in years now - so much easier than days, weeks and months 😀.

eekwhatnow · 16/02/2026 17:49

Amazing @HorrorFan81 that’s so brilliant.

HorrorFan81 · 16/02/2026 17:52

Thanks all. Unfortunately I am celebrating by sitting in a&e, not what I had hoped for! Hoping to be out of here soon

Lavrander · 16/02/2026 19:29

Oh no @HorrorFan81! That is not a place to be celebrating at all.
Hope all will be okay.

FiloPasty · 16/02/2026 19:34

What! I hope you’re ok and seen quickly @HorrorFan81 x
