Calling time on wine: 100 days sober - starting 01/01/26

1000 replies

reset100 · 27/12/2025 09:06

My wine drinking has slowly spiralled into a daily habit and I’m calling time on it. No drama, no rock bottom - just the realisation that it’s become a crutch and I want out of the swirl.

From 1st January, I’m committing to 100 days sober and I’d love others to join me. This isn’t about moderation or “just weekends” - it’s about a clean break and supporting each other to go completely alcohol-free for the full 100 days.

If alcohol has crept in as a daily default, if you’re tired of negotiating with yourself every evening, or if you simply want a proper reset with people who get it, you’re very welcome here.

No judgement. No pressure. Just accountability, honesty, and support.

@Youdontseehow that drink looks fabulous! Only problem is that it contains licorice, which is a no for me. Any other recommendations? 🙂

Peach ginger Trip - gives me heartburn though. I also sometimes buy the AF G&T cans - both regular and pink.

Just adding up the dates....are we aiming for 10 April as our 100 day goal?

This is a handy chart - it looks like April 10th is day 100, so that would be the final day. April 11th is day 111!

I’m in. Around a bottle a night, sometimes more. I’ve found myself getting grouchy at 6 until I have my first glass… I just want a break

Let’s thinks about the ‘why’

Blackouts. Bad choices. That washed-out regret feeling the morning after.

What’s yours?

Yes to these.

My social circle has A LOT of “big drinkers” (some are functioning alcoholics) and I know most of them will be waking up with raging hangovers and having a hair of the dog….then leading to another day of drinking, followed by hangover and rinse and repeat until back to work. I’m in Scotland and the 2nd is also a public holiday so lots of folk off til Monday the 5th which means tons of drinking.

5050Clown · 01/01/2026 08:35

Yes definitely, I'm in. I'm currently drinking a bottle of wine every night. I feel terrible and wake up everyday with a headache. I don't know why I do it.

LMAlcott · 01/01/2026 08:36

I’ve ordered some good rays drinks and got some hot chocolate in. Didn’t have a big night last night but still have a slightly fuzzy head. Looking forward to feeling fresh and rested in the mornings!
In two minds about having a drink at my big reunion on Saturday… part of me thinks I’d be better off staying sober. Then on the other hand it’s a very rare chance to meet up with old friends and celebrate. Will add a day on at the end. Thoughts?

Blueskiesahead24 · 01/01/2026 08:43

I’m in too. I’m a single parent to a disabled child. I work. I don’t socialise. I’m tired and menopausal. I never used to drink, but now it’s wine every night. I think I give myself permission to stop and rest once the bottle is open. I don’t get drunk (which in itself is probably not good), I don’t wake with a hangover, but I am putting on weight, falling asleep on the sofa, and I worry for my liver. Ultimately I want my freedom, and my evenings, back. Today I’m not drinking alcohol.

Infortheduration · 01/01/2026 09:06

A lot of what everyone is saying is resonating. I was having a conversation with friends about their plans for 2026, and realised I have few for myself, and feel I'm stuck in a holding pattern. This is going to help break that pattern, break out, and move forward to new feelings, thoughts, and experiences.

2026x · 01/01/2026 09:07

I’m off for a run which feels like a good way to start the day / year. I find it much easier to not to drink if I am in the habit of exercising. Happy new year everyone

Goandygo · 01/01/2026 09:07

Good morning and happy new year !
So many of us here eager and wanting the same goal.
@freshstart2026 I love that, thanks. Will definitely use it.
I'm in a rush so I'll post more later. I'm on a hiking holiday so best get moving. I had 1 glass of wine last night - unheard of 😇

Clytemnestra21 · 01/01/2026 09:09

I’m in. Cut down a lot last year and probably averaged about one evening a month. But had an evening of drinking wine on Wednesday and things went a bit wrong, was horribly hungover yesterday and now I’m ill. I think I’m ready to just eliminate it completely forever.

Shalalalalaohbaby · 01/01/2026 09:16

Hi everyone! Thanks for setting up this thread as I was looking for a dry January thread. My drinking has got out of hand, I drink almost every night, not enjoying it anymore but feel it’s a habit and one I want to break! Love the tips Iv read so far on here. Tried to download and use the try dry app but it keeps freezing. Wonder if it’s cos so many people are also trying to use it?

reset100 · 01/01/2026 09:17

Good morning all,

I woke up today feeling genuinely refreshed because I didn’t drink last night - and that alone is a reminder of why I’m doing this. No fog, no regret. Just a clear head and a sense that I’ve started something important.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about a reset.
Days 1–30 are about breaking habits and riding out the noise. Days 31–100 are where the real magic starts to happen.

If today feels long, just focus on not drinking today. That’s it, no overthinking social plans that are weeks away. Stay in today.

Use this thread. Check in. Lurk if you need to. Say when you’re wobbling. Celebrate the small wins: an early night, a clear morning, a calm evening.

We’re choosing clarity, energy, better sleep, better moods, and a stronger version of ourselves. 🙌

Day One: Alcohol-Free Survival Checklist

Decide once
Make the decision for today and stop renegotiating it. You’re not quitting forever, you’re not drinking today. End of.

Eat properly
Prioritise protein, carbs, and something comforting. This is not the day for salads and self-denial.

Hydrate like it’s your job
Water, sparkling water, herbal tea, whatever works.

Replace the ritual
The habit isn’t just alcohol, it’s the routine.
Same glass. Same time. Different drink!

Plan the witching hour
Identify the danger zone (usually 5–8pm). Decide now what you’ll be doing instead: shower, walk, TV, early bed, anything. I’ll be doing the gloss painting I’ve been putting off forever..

Lower the bar
Today is not about productivity, fitness goals, or being impressive. Surviving the evening alcohol-free is a win.

Delay, don’t deny
If a craving hits: tell yourself you’ll reassess in 20 minutes. PLAY IT FORWARD. Cravings peak and pass.

Remove temptation
Out of sight is out of mind. If alcohol is in the house, put it somewhere inconvenient or ask someone else to deal with it.

Check in
Post here. Read others’ posts. You are not doing this alone — and connection kills cravings.

Let’s do this!

An important mindset shift is that alcohol is not necessary for celebration, relaxation, etc. It's different doing it sober and that takes adjustment. But I think you should not start making exceptions so early and I think you'd be pleased with yourself for doing it sober. It's not worse sober, just different.

WorriedMutha · 01/01/2026 09:43

Checking in for day 1 and feeling quite tiggery. I had 5.3 units of red with my dinner last night according to the app. I installed the app on boxing day as I felt a bit woolly headed after Christmas. So I have already had 5 AF days before last night knocks me back to 1 again. That's my last hurrah so I'm here for the inspiration.
I'm also pledging to cut down my phone use as it sucks up hours. That means I will check mumsnet morning and evening and put the bugger down after. That should free up enough time for the new me. I will be a fiendishly fit domestic goddess in 100 days time!

having just spoken to the group, we are actually meeting at lunchtime not the evening as I originally thought. This makes it much easier for me – I don’t like drinking in the day time anyway. Will definitely abstain!

A671090 · 01/01/2026 09:46

Hi all - can I join please?

AbundanceofKatherines · 01/01/2026 10:02

I’m in please 🙏🏼 I did 100 days in 2021 and it was great! I do the odd month as a reset (did January and October in 2025) and I generally don’t drink Sunday to Thursday (inclusive). However my Fridays and Saturdays have been getting messy recently and Christmas has thrown my routine out.

Thanks for the thread OP!

That's a really interesting view and one I've not thought of before.
But, subconsciously I have been looking at other ways to relax, etc, and I have been to parties and not drank and even enjoyed myself more.
So, yes, really interesting.

Youdontseehow · 01/01/2026 11:02

Morning day100ers and happy new year 🥳

was great waking up clear headed today and not having a hangover although I can’t say I feel refreshed cos I had a rubbish sleep due to fireworks!

Thinking of my friends, many of which are heavy drinkers and feeling quite smug that I’m not hungover like they are. Long may it continue.

I’m overcompensating with food and snacks though so my plan today is to have a big portion of dinner so I don’t even feel like drinking. Will be driving beforehand to pick up a friend so all temptation should be removed because once I’ve eaten and am full up, the desire to get on the wine leaves me. I need to lose some weight but that can wait - main focus is on not feeling deprived today.

Actually looking forward to getting back to the gym and my dance classes next week.

Hope everyone has a sober new year day and the temptations are manageable x

pawsedforthought · 01/01/2026 11:04

I'm going to try, I dont drink every day but I know just how easily I can creep up from 1 day a week to 3 then 5 etc.

I'm the only driver in my family (hubby lost his licence through drinking) so if we are out I don't have anything and am always the designated driver but then feel mardy the next night at home and neck a bottle of wine with no thought and little enjoyment so I need to break the cycle of "spite" drinking lol.

My first test day will be Saturday and making sure I don't buy any wine whilst shopping.

good luck everyone and be kind to yourselves 😘

Whosthetabbynow · 01/01/2026 11:14

I’ll give it a go. Can’t imagine getting to 100 days but wouldn’t that be nice. Need to break some habits x

freshstart2026 · 01/01/2026 11:31

Thanks for the inspiring posts OP! I’m doing my first fasting day on the 5:2 diet today - I’m clearly a glutton for punishment! I’ve got that positive January 1st feeling though so might as well use it. I’m aiming to lose 18lbs - 100 days alcohol-free should help!

Mollydoggerson · 01/01/2026 11:40

I m in! I m spending €100 per week on alcohol. What a waste of time, energy, health, muscle mass. Let's divert the expenditure to healthy alternatives.
