Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

This is my strawberry and watermelon tango that I'm trying to jazz up! My brain isn't convinced but I'll get through to it!

I would like to join please. Wanted to try this last year but the time wasn’t right. So started NYD, was tempted to have a ‘Hair of the dog’ after NYE but I held on. I cannot remember the last time I didn’t have a glass of wine come wine 0’Clock, which varies between 4 and 5 0’Clock. Always because I wanted a glass and not because I was craving it, you understand. Just my treat whilst cooking our evening meal. Our children have grown up. DH also enjoys a beer in the evening and I know he will try and sabotage my attempt at this. But I need to do it for me and to prove that I can. Hopefully this group will keep me accountable. (Please no negative comments about DH, he is a lovely hubby but enjoys that we enjoy an evening drink together. But I am finding it effects me more these days)

@TessApricot

I went to Tesco and bought tons of drinks yesterday: tomato juice, orange squash, orange juice, herbal teas, no alcohol beer and cider. It’s really nice having a choice of what to drink rather than it just being water (which will make me want wine more).

My crunch point is when I’m cooking dinner. I really enjoy time in the kitchen listening to a podcast, cooking with a glass of wine - I get such pleasure from it that I don’t think I want to quit booze permanently but I definitely want to prove to myself I can have a month off.

Yes exactly this. I love listening to Radio 6 whilst cooking with a glass of white on the go. But I can push through and as you say can go back to it but know when to stop.
MrsMiaWallis · 02/01/2021 19:59

I also love cooking with radio 6 and a glass of wine! But I've told myself I can do that in February!

wintertime6 · 02/01/2021 20:02

Just checking in on Day 2. I've had a really lovely day, had a nice socially distanced walk with some friends and their kids earlier. Was up early before the kids, got showered, had a nice breakfast and got our stuff ready for going out, instead of the usual lying in as long as I can because my head feels a bit fuzzy and then skipping breakfast and running late. So much more pleasant when you're feeling nice and fresh.

Has anyone else tracked their resting heart rate when they're off the alcohol? I stopped for a couple of weeks in November and it went down 20 beats per minute over the course of the couple of weeks! I look forward to waking up every morning to see what it is, it spurs me on to keep going.

mrsnibblesisahero · 02/01/2021 20:14

Can I join even though only started today? Going to go through to 2nd Feb though... sorry, late decision! I'm also going to struggle while cooking and then the evenings... it feels odd not having a drink, like the only thing to do is to go to bed? I think this tells me I really need a reset.... that's just not good at all is it.

Youngatheart00 · 02/01/2021 20:36

Any of the heavier drinkers starting to struggle right about now?

I don’t crave a drink, but I am hungry (obviously missing the wine calories) and I’ve got really achy legs.

MoonBaby1 · 02/01/2021 20:37

Cooking and drinking just go hand in hand.

What I wasn’t expecting was the hunger. I’ve been ravenous all day.

MrsMiaWallis · 02/01/2021 20:37

I'm quite irritable!

MrsMiaWallis · 02/01/2021 20:39

Mainly because I have two girls (18 and 21) sharing a bottle of prosecco and arguing with each other about what to watch on tv. Considering an early night Hmm

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/01/2021 20:52

I've got a headache and it feels weird not having wine in the fridge.

Hohofortherobbers · 02/01/2021 21:16

I'm a little irritable too, I slept well last night but have come to bed early tonight as it doesn't seem worth staying up

MrsMiaWallis · 02/01/2021 21:27

I've gone to bed! I have a cup of tea, an extra duvet and Castaway on tv. I'm actually quite happy!

Haggisfish · 02/01/2021 21:28

I have shovelled sugar in like nobody’s business today. Just went for a nighttime snow walk with ds-glad I was sober and able to go. Does feel odd not having wine. But good as well.

supercee · 02/01/2021 21:46

I have gone to bed too and feeling very fed up. This will be the first night I've not had wine in literally weeks. Have eaten rubbish today though but although the alcohol stops today the healthy eating will begin tomorrow or Monday.

Haggisfish · 02/01/2021 21:50

@supercee be kind to yourself. I’m taking it one bad habit at a time! Alcohol first, diet can wait a while.

supercee · 02/01/2021 21:55

Thanks @Haggisfish I'm probably going through a mini withdrawal! I'm just so desperate to crack on, lose weight and feel better but one step at a time I guess.

AngryAngel · 02/01/2021 21:57

Can I join in? Today is my day 1. I find the circa 6pm bit hard, when the kids are beginning to get annoying/start fighting and I pour myself something as I put some dinner together while listening to the radio or some music. I struggled from earlier this afternoon, because I have been drinking earlier and earlier through lockdown and Christmas. Felt better by about 8.30 so I think 6-8 is my main trigger time. I have some lovely mint tea, planning on an early night and some downloaded fiction to help. So as far as I’m concerned, I’ve ticked off my day one! Hoping to lose a bit of lockdown weight, try and wean my body off yearning for that first glass of the evening. I anticipate that I will find going to sleep hard as I kind of depend on wine to help me sleep. Which says it all really. I also think I’m going to be more hungry and crave sugar, which will be a difficult one. I know it’s early days, but what time of the day are others finding most difficult?

Taytotots · 02/01/2021 22:02

Can I join too? I'm mainly doing this for health reasons. Try to limit drinking to 2-3 nights a week currently and 3 drinks max but think alcohol is triggering migraines. Also attempting to see if it makes my slightly high BP go down as I want to avoid medication for that (@wintertime6 do you track yours?). So far so good but not back at work yet so low stress and its only been a day. Will see how it is when that kicks in......

PeacheyPeach · 02/01/2021 22:23

Hi all x day 2 here . I am sitting watching Friends with the last of the holiday chocolates!! Going to start the healthy eating on Monday! Actually took a good look in the mirror at myself today and couldn't believe how much weight I've put on. I look pregnant!!! Hoping to shift this weight !

mrsnibblesisahero · 02/01/2021 22:23

Same as you @AngryAngel - earlier evening is worse. If I can make it through that it's not too bad, but I had to fight the urge to just go to bed at 7pm and was hugely irritable!

BinkerTell · 02/01/2021 22:27

I've just downloaded the TryDry app and am quite shocked by how many extra calories I was having a day just in booze.

I've had a night time tea and am now off to bed with my book and the cat.

wintertime6 · 02/01/2021 22:45

@Taytotots no I haven't tracked my BP, but it would be interesting to see the effect on it too. I got a Fitbit earlier this year and it gives your resting heart rate, so I only really noticed it because of the Fitbit when I gave up for a couple of weeks, I hadn't actually planned on monitoring it.

Haggisfish · 02/01/2021 22:47

I find dinner time worst-I drink while
I eat. If I can get through dinner I’m ok for the rest of the night. Had some sparkling pink lady apple juice from Tesco tonight-it was nice.

Imissmoominmama · 02/01/2021 22:49

I’m in! It’s going well so far Grin.
